Happy Friday !
I have been lucky enough to have enough time to work on 2 paintings today. I did the 3D work on myfinal mountain painting ,part of a series of 8, before breakfast.

After that 2 hours setting up sales of unwanted art kit in eBay plus some new works. Any profits from kit sales go to new materials. All profits from paintings go to charities of our choice.

The 3D work, shown in the photo below, took over an hour to mix and apply. It will be a week before it is dry and hard enough to paint over.

Llyn Idwal and Devil's Kitchen, Eryri in progress.

The sun came out for at least an hour this morning but the day ended with downpours. Anybody planning to visit Stonehenge for the Summer Solstice ought to be packing a canoe.

Spent 2 hours tarting up my home studio which I hope will be an improvement. After enough of that I decided to kick off a series of knife paintings on canvas. I have always wanted to do this but never felt confident enough given the price of canvases and how much paint is used.

However I thought what the worst could happen and decided to get stuck in.

Happy dry day everyone.
I don;t know about anywhere else but today was dry with the odd dash of sunshine to give us a glimpse of what summer in early June should look like in the UK.
We have been rushing around dropping bags off at various charity shops so that if & when we ever have some sunshine we will be able to go to the coast and I can get some decnt sketching done on location. Until then treasured photos from last year will have to suffice.

Not so very happy Monday everyone.

The world has not improved over the weekend by the looks of things. I agree that being hooked on the news every day is a recipe for a poor night's sleep or worse.

In the end you have to accept there is next to nothing that most of us can do but to keep going.

I plan to keep producing paintings as long as I can and there is someone to look at them

For a start here is "Llanddwyn Island, Anglesey", acrylic on 24" x18" canvas, 2024.

It's Friday again!
I started looking for something to add to a apainting this morning but surprise, surprise! one thing led to another and 3 hours later I have very organised drawers with lists of paint etc but not much more of it on a canvas today at least.

I have plans to delve into the murky world of knife painting on canvas.

A local history group meeting is in prospect in St Mark's churchyard , Worsley. It should be a nice walk there and the location is pleasant apart from traffic on 3 sides. It always looks its best in Springtime. I usually wait there while my wife is giving blood and do watercolours of some of the monuments.

I must go and get my bag ready tonight.

A busy day today. Another gym trip, collecting hearing aid batteries then a trip to collect some aggregate for my 3D works. A walk through the wood behind our house and then a trip out for a fortnightly way in at the local pudding club.

All being well there, a late lunch then my favourite part of the day i.e. an afternoon snooze. Batteries recharged off upstairs to correct a painting. I study my work carefully when drawing/painting but I can't be the only artist that returns to a canvas to find it sometimes looks like someone else has painted it.

I sat down with a professional artist and gallery owner many years ago. He had looked at my works and asked whether I wanted a nice critique or an honest one. I chose honesty. It wasn't easy but it was very helpful. His opinion was that , apart from field sketches, trying to finish a painting in one session rarely improves the outcome.

When we were staying at Gwydir Castle some years ago I used to draw pencil portraits of famous Tudors by candlelight. An experience well worth trying imho. However my enthusiasm was often dampened after returning from a comfort break to find Thomas Cromwell's left eye had been moved by the art fairy.

I do find painting acrylics in stages more difficult compared to oils which could be wet for days. However with acrylics, merging parts of the painting can be a problem as the old bit is dry. Perhaps it's the way I paint?

Something more recent for a change, "Pen y fan, winter, impression", acrylic on canvas, 2024, This was a chance to try out a new aggregate mix.

If you are lucky enough to have the time have you noticed how a day's planned painting ends up being an hour if that. Life always seems to get in the way somehow.

I know a lot of artists would love to have an hour a day painting or enjoying some for of artistic activity. I am also blessed with an indoor and a garden studio. In the garden setup I can make a mess without fear of social, (or actual), castration. Luck has some part in it the rest is good planning and life choices.

I haven't been to a pub for a drink for years out of choice. I am not the most social of animals and most of my friends are either dead, living far away or are too knackered healthwise.

Whatever the reasons, I am always grateful for every chance I get to to create anything especially if it is well received because that means I have brightened up someone's day. You can't put a price on that.

I dragged myself away from the easel to go to the gym this morning. I prefer painting but I have to keep myself healthy, (Personally , I think it's more like damage limitation).

My large library of reference photos is still being sorted so that only the best are painted because they are more easily available . It is a sobering thought that at some stage you have to accept that you won't be healthy enough or around at all so that a lot of them won't get painted.

In which case there's nothing else to do but to get busy with the brushes to try to reduce the backlog.

Good Evening Everyone,
the world seems to be going up in flames but here in the UK we are seemingly obsessed with our general election or at least the politicians are. Personally everyone promising me almost anything for my vote has no attraction for me.

Elsewhere lots of people are literally praying for armaggedon, There is next to nothing I can do about any of them apart from getting on with things.

I have frequently thought that I am a bit obsessive about painting. Having looked at the news these past few weeks I now feel fairly normal. Sadly the weather is not helping and we have only been to the coast once this year. At least we can go later if it warms up a bit.

Painting is my solace as it is for so many others and I am grateful for being able to indulge in it almost anytime subject to a slowly dwindling schedule of medical appointments.

Now fully recovered from my malaise and getting back to the gym regularly to strengthen my legs & knees. I lost 6 weeks of decent painting time so there is no time to lose. It is still so damp in my garden studio that my 3D reliefs on canvas are taking over a week to dry properly.

I have started putting some part 3D work together in my indoor studio. My wife is very patient but if I get any 3D mix on the carpet the drying time will be the last thing I need to worry about.

New works should start to be available for listing by next weekend.

Back home after 4 nights away! We have just spent the week in beautiful South Lakeland at Crumble Cottage, Beckside near Cartmel. It is an idyllic place awash with the sound of birdsong and sheep who I am told, spend most of their day plotting how to escape from their fields to explore nearby gardens.

A full review of Crumble Cottages will follow shortly via Google. It is a wonderful place to inspire creativity. The weather wasn't great but I got quite a lot done and have plans for a lot more on our next trip.

As you can see from the photo I have a very special memory of painting underneath a laburnum tree with the air humming from countless honey bees all around many within inches of my head. It was reminiscent of trips to Provence long ago. It doesn't get much better than that.

The owners , Sarah & Stewart, always make us very welcome and we very much look forward to seeing them later in the year.

Back in the studio tomorrow before the F.A. Cup in the afternoon and the Bank Holiday weekend promises to be very busy here, It certainly beats sitting in traffic jams for 3 days.

How quickly things change! It only seems a couple of weeks ago that we were longing for a break from the seemingly endless rain and cool conditions.

This morning I wanted to do a watercolour sketch and took the opportunity to do this before it was too hot for me. Hat and full sleeve cheesecloth shirt to keep the old melanoma at bay.

A great thing about warm days is that each layer of watercolour dries very quickly. I have lost count of the number of days that I have been outside and needed 2 pads used in tandem to avoid sitting in the cold watching paint dry,( literally).

Watercolour isn't my forte but it is very useful to me to capture memories, which are most important to me, relatively quickly. It also means much less kit to be carried.

I used to be frustrated whenever I felt my sketches were not successful. A friend of mine who is a professional painter passed on some advice he had been given for similar reasons I.E. It isn't always about catching a fish but rather spending a nice day by the river.

Anyway here is my impression of Azalea "Klondike", watercolour on 140lb Bockingford.

Good Evening Everyone!
following my recovery from my winter mange I have now been given a bucket list of outstanding jobs which do not include anything remotely connected with art. The reference to bucket is that which I shall be kicking if they don't get done before the end of the week.

Therefore my plans for sharing the results from my new watercolour paint set that I have assembled are shelved for the moment.

I have delved into the archive for tonight's offering . Before I gave up oils, for health reasons, I experimented with various media , especially Liquin. I miss those days but not painting in 25 - 30 degreec C heat wearing a respirator. I was rather pleased with the results especially the clouds.

The result is titled "Beach Storm", oil on canvas, 2013.

Good Afternoon Everyone!

A busy day today. Started painting at 8.20 and painted in some middle ground on a seascape of Appletree Bay, Scilly Islands. I was feeling fairly pleased with myself when I realised there was some damage to the sky.

I am not the type of painter who notices some errors before the surface has dried. I am more the type that curses having missed what then looked so obvious. It could have been damaged in storage as I usually have several canvases on the go.

Whatever the excuse my skill set for repairing blemishes is widening steadily. Perhaps spotting the errors in the first place would be more efficient but definitely not as much fun.

2 canvases prepped with gesso in my garden studio plus additional 3D work added to a panel. I even managed to feed the greedy dog next door to stop him barking. He always arrives when it is quiet in the garden and I am trying to paint horizon lines or something else requiring a lot of concentration.

To Finish of to Fiddle? , that is the question.

With apologies to The Bard , that indeed is the question. I still find it very difficult to decide when to declare a painting finished.

When I painted in oils and decided any amendments were necessary it was a fairly simple task. The paint took a few days to become touch dry. Any additions could be merged into the existing paint.

However when painting in acrylics the window for such mergers is much narrower, especially in warmer conditions. I find any additions more difficult to merge into the existing surface.

Having acrylic paint dry and harden in a couple of days aids the removal of any new changes quite easily. I am learning to make these changes but it is very slow going but there again, overcoming such obstacles is part of the fun and you won't find much help in any textbooks.

This is one I finished today...."Beach, St Martins, Scilly Islands", acrylic on 20in x 16in canvas, 2024

A time to be grateful?

I am sat here typing this missive and have the view, I have included below, from my chair. No one is trying to drop a missile or drone on me, for now at least.

Where we take holidays we see two pairs of hosts who love what they do and never stop working all day long. I find their energy levels both enviable & inspiring at the same time. When we get home I use these visits as recharging points. We are so lucky we have met these people who are very supportive of my charity efforts.

So it is a great motivator when energy levels are low or the paint won't behave on the canvas. I know it is merely one way of looking at it and other people will probably have other methods.

I have spent the afternoon sorting out printout of web photos. Later in the week I shall print out some new ones to increase the range of subjects I plan to paint. I need a wet weather day and these are not exactly in short supply at the moment.

Anyway grateful I am and tomorrow the painting starts again in earnest.

What a day!
We visited Rhos on Sea today to have lunch at the Beach Cafe but sadly it was closed for a private function. Better luck next time perhaps.

Anyway I spent a couple of hours trying to sketch & watercolour without my fingers freezing off. 4 thermal layers and a wooly hat and a biting East wind cut through everything. The views and skies were magnificent but at a price. As far as I know it's only Brits that are mental enough to eat ice cream while their fingers are dropping off.

Maybe our European cousins are as mental but I have no evidence for this. I have attached a couple of photos to show how nice the views are from Rhos on Sea promenade.
We weren't sure if Tracey & Julie at The Ice Cream Dream or us were the coldest. I think the english term is "Bracing".

Anyway a very happy memory and I shall share the images of my sketches as soon as I can scan them over to my PC.

Into every life some rain must fall. That applies to everyone, including artists. Compared to other people it was one or two drops of rain rather than even a light shower.

I have lost 2 finished works because the canvases have become warped . It is a shame because I quite liked the finished works and had spent quite a bit of time on them, However they are not fit for sale even if it is for charity.

The 3D substrate I apply to my canvases & panels is very thick. depending on the thickness of the mix and what is in it there is a considerable amount of energy involved and this pulls on the canvas. I suspect these were over wintered in my garden studio and because of the weather it was very damp inside. It was one or more of these reasons or just a sub standard canvas/stretchers.

I shall pay more attention during the drying period and may have to restrict my 3D work to wooden panels but that would make them very heavy. Hey ho...

Happy Weekend Everyone!

three days without rain is surely a cause for celebration. I find myself daydreaming about day trips to Rhos on Sea and Cleveleys. However mother nature is conspiring against it.

I like sketching in watercolours outside as long as it is dry and warm enough to allow my ever patient wife to sit and read without her fingers freezing off.

I can wrap up and protect myself against the elements but sadly not a barrage of hypothermia induced abuse so most of the time 15 degrees C is required as a minimum. That temperature needs to increase as the onshore breeze rises.

So , until things improve I shall work indoors.

Happy Easter Everyone , a Kosher Passover to my Jewish friends and Joyeux Pacques to my french friends.

I wish everyone a peaceful weekend although the world news suggests that might be a tad optimistic but no reason not to hope for it.

I am getting my strength back and can manage a couple of hours a day at my easel. My recent health issues have left me in no doubt that every minute painting or doing anything else is so precious.

I have avoided painting lots of subjects because I always felt I might not do them justice on canvas but not any more. I have also noticed that using brighter warmer colours rather than snowy mountains has improved my mood. It's an interesting thought that I shall delve into shortly. Either way I am enjoying trying new things and that is all that matters.

This is my first attempt at "Snowdon Horseshoe", oil on canvas 2013, I have painted it many times since as I love the mountains of Eryri or Snowdonia as it was when I first visited it on an outward bound trip circa 1969 (cripes!).

Good Afternoon Everyone,
Healthwise I have just experienced some of the worst weeks of my life. within 24 hours I went from going to the gym to being an invalid that couldn't stand up which was absolutely terrifying. The following days opened doors to places I don't wish to revisit ever again. For a few days I couldn't pick up my meds or hold a brush.

As one of the 7 Gp's I have seen over 3 weeks said "you have had
a very difficult journey". Their main concern was to keep me out of hospital at all costs which speaks volumes about the state of the NHS today.

The care I received was excellent and I am deeply grateful to all staff at Lakes Medical Centre, Swinton for their care, concern and understanding.

Happily I am now much better and am planning for the future. It has taught me that there is not a minute to waste. There never was but now I know it for a fact. During my early recovery everything eas a great effort but I managed to paint for a few minutes every day which helped a lot.

Every day that I can paint I shall from now on. Having explained my absence its now onwards & upwards hopefully.

My watercolour paint project continues but I am also painting on canvas for a couple of hours a day whenever possible.

I am trying to reduce the amount of print outs of mountain views from which I work. I had a Kindle Fire available so I tried loading some images of reference photos just before Christmas 2023. A kindle or Ipad has the advantage that I can enlarge specific areas when the need arises. The important bit is not to get any paint or substrate on the screen. Apart from ecology I am also saving money and storage space.

I shall be sharing a few more images from the studio and paint pouring in the coming weeks.

Weekend approaches and I am counting my blessings. I live in the frozen North i.e. anywhere north of the M25 to my Southern colleagues who are always telling me that "it always rains a lot in Manchester" , This can be a bit irksome when some of them have lived up here for many years.

I am reading awful reports of swathes of the country south of here being under water. I do not gloat but I suspect there will be less talk of Manchester 's climatic woes for a few weeks at least. As I said I am grateful to have a dry house and my studio intact.

We also don't have to dig an air raid shelter, for now , at least. It's just as well as it would be a bit soggy even after the relatively light rain we have had recently.

I have stocked up on art supplies as I suspect supplies of art materials are going to become ever more scarce and consequently expensive due to the activities of the riff raff around the Gulf. That said if the supply of art kit is my biggest concern at the moment then I have much to be grateful for.

From the weather report I shall be working indoors for the next 2/3 weeks at least. I have plenty of 3D canvases ready to finish off. Watercolour project is next in line as soon as I have selected the colours for my new paint sets.

I like building watercolour sets as I find it a nice way to relax. Periodically I have a clearout of surplus sets by either selling them on EBay or donating them to a school near Carrtmel. I am exploring the possibility of a set made up of granulating colours only. Much to go at and little time to waste.
