Plexus Gallery is a Brisbane-based commercial art gallery representing a collection of independent visual artists. The gallery was started at the end of 2019 by Sona Babajanyan and Billy Shannon in an effort to rethink the commercial gallery paradigm. We run primarily as an online space augmented by organising ‘pop-up’ physical shows, both here in Brisbane and overseas. Our artists are both repres

ented by us and independent, as we do not ask for any exclusivity to their representation. We are here to support the talented people that we work with, but also to help create a healthy and active creative ecosystem for all artists and galleries in Brisbane.

‘Plexus’ means a network, a complex structure containing an intricate network of parts. And likewise, we are very interested in networking to nurture the creative life of Brisbane. Our philosophy is to creatively gather together to grow, and we feel that by working together, we can all benefit from a stronger and more varied artistic milieu. We want to bring people together, we want to create a vibrant creative community and share our passion for art and creativity, be a platform for nurturing creative life and thought. We want you to discover new artists and the work that will make your hearts sing! And we want to make it as easy and enjoyable as possible. Sometimes buying art online can be tricky. Who knows how accurate the colours are, can you trust your monitor? What if you don’t like it in life? We have instigated a “View at Home Before You Buy” feature to bring your selected artworks to your office or home for viewing in your own environment and if needed help you with your choices. For more information on this concept, see our Art to your home page. In addition to this personalised service, we can refer the art lover to some of Brisbane’s best interior designers, picture framers and art installers.

An excerpt from our interview with Sona Babajanyan

Plexus: Do you dream? Do your dreams influence your art in any way?

Sona: Oh yes, and I love my dreams, no matter how wild, crazy, and abstract they are. Sometimes, they have nothing to do with my daytime perception of myself as Sona, it seems that they’ve been sent to the wrong person.

Plexus: How does your background influence your art, and can you give a specific example in one of your works?

Sona: Well, the background is background. It’s always there, no matter how much paint you smear over it. For most of my life, I never tried to openly demonstrate my background in my art, but I knew that it was always there, showing out somehow. I never liked explicit, loud messages. I love heavy textures that show just a hint of the background and let viewers see the layers (history). But for the last several years, I guess I started becoming more explicit myself...

Plexus: How do you think artificial intelligence could impact the future of art and your practice in particular?
Sona: Well, the future is here, I guess, and we all are already experiencing its impact. It’s huge; it’s a shift of paradigm, I think. I always embraced new technologies, realising that they are inevitable and instead of being in denial we better try to make them work for us in the best possible way.

Wellcome to Plexus Gallery!

Plexus Gallery is an online space, connecting a group of curated Brisbane-based artists with art lovers and collectors. There are so many talented independent artists out there not represented by physical galleries! We want to bring them all together, we want to create a vibrant creative community and share our passion for art and creativity, becoming a platform for nurturing creative life and thought. We want you to discover new artists and the work that will make your hearts sing! And we want to make it as easy and enjoyable as possible.

Buying art online can be tricky. Who knows how accurate the colours are, can you trust your monitor? What if you don’t like it in life? You don’t have to worry about it any more. Our unique “View at Home Before You Buy” feature will bring your selected artworks to your office or home for viewing in your own environment and if needed help you with your choices. For more information on this concept, see our Art to your home page.. In addition to this personalised service, we can refer the art lover to some of Brisbane's best interior designers, picture framers and art installers.

Plexus Gallery spans the gap by providing independent artists with representation, our online gallery is augmented by organising 'popup' physical shows, both here in Brisbane and overseas.

Plexus means a network, a complex structure containing an intricate network of parts. And likewise, we are very interested in networking to nurture the visual arts life in Brisbane. We will therefore be instigating several strategies to promote Brisbane arts, other galleries and independent artists’ initiatives. Our main philosophy is that by working together, we can all benefit from a stronger and more varied artistic milieu.
