As we continue to showcase "Flower Talk" until April 28th, we're thrilled to extend our warmest invitation to our next exhibition, "Vermicular Calligraphy," featuring the esteemed artist Cui Fei.

This exhibition showcases artist Cui Fei's recent series, representing a further exploration of the asemic writing found in nature. While collecting plant materials in nature, artist became intrigued by the markings carved by beetles on tree trunks and how closely some of these patterns resemble Chinese calligraphy. Inspired by the carved shapes from nature, Cui creates "sheaths" of insect-scarred tree trunks using lead and metalworking techniques in her series. The metal is meticulously hammered to reflect the contours and texture of the tree trunks.

Cui traces "writing" back to its origin- nature, highlighting its importance to human civilization. The lead sheaths of the dead tree trunks represent the devastating loss caused by our overexploitation of nature.

This exhibition serve as a poignant reminder that transformative change is urgently needed for a sustainable future.

The opening reception is scheduled for Saturday, May 4th, from 4pm to 6pm at the Garage Art Center.
We hope to see you all there!

Our future scheduled artist, Yvonne Shortt, is presenting her project called 'Shredding My Toxic Core,' investigating scarcity and abundance and aiming to reshape the conversation regarding what an artist CV can look like at A.I.R. Gallery in Brooklyn from March through April.

We see Art is everywhere, and everything can be art. However, not all art is good, and not everything is considered artwork. I once dismissed the question of what qualifications are needed to become an artist as ignorant, but with time passing, I find it worth considering. Due to the nature of art, it's not easy to establish clear criteria or boundaries, even among artists, regarding what makes good art.

Since values cannot be clearly divided, pricing art is also challenging. Nevertheless, to ensure the survival of our artists and the essence of art, we must think, create standards for ourselves, and understand art. This way, we can make it understandable to others.

It's not about insisting that art must be exceptional or superior to other things, but in today's standardized criteria, it is clear that art shouldn’t be measured the same as other fields.

Is a painting considered good just because it sells well, or is an artist deemed excellent because they are famous? Is an expensive piece inherently better, or does a larger painting or the one taking a long time to finish hold more value? What is the true criterion for an authentic artist?

These are questions we should continue to ask and ponder. As professional artists who have experienced and deeply contemplated both the struggles and joys of being creators, we believe that some standards are necessary.

Yvonne also raised several powerful points on her project. While it may be challenging, starting by excluding what is not, as her manifesto suggests, could gradually help refine our standards.
Go check out!
