M A H O N I A

Started this crazy thing during the exceptionally brilliant Still life flowers painting workshop with at last week and haven't been able to leave it alone since.

In an attempt to inject a little summer colour into this grey wintry time of year, I might have overdone it slightly.

Although the placing of coloured card behind the subject is a great takeaway from the workshop. Other points of consideration were:
🤓 Colour theory (how to create shadow colours)
🎨 The skill of palette selection (and limitation, ahem!)
🌈 Colour mixing, and
🖌️ Brush stroke choice.

It may not look like it but a lot of thought went into this technicolour titan of winter. If only I could also infuse this canvas with the incredible sweet scent too.

First time having a go at this and I loved the mindful, pacey, snippy process.
I still have no idea how to go round corners and my cutting accuracy leaves a lot to be desired, but I'm happy with my chirpy chappy.

Big Thanks TomatoJack Arts and WWT Slimbridge for hosting a terrific creative day... I'll keep my eye out for the next 😄

A L G A R V E

The timing of this holiday was perfect, until it suddenly wasn't. But I flew out as booked anyway and I'm so so very pleased I did...

The warmth (of the sunshine initially and latterly the friendships that have bloomed) will last in me through this difficult time and get me beyond the dark days of a Welsh winter too.

Just looking at these paintings already evokes wonderful memories. Not to mention the potential of life and the essence of optimism that sunlight carries wherever it hits.
The positivity and warm words of my teacher (spoken generously and also written) and kindness of my fellow students will stay with me whenever I flick through my sketchbook. And the life long memories of experiences I never imagined I'd have (oh, sooo many stories!) are in there now forever.

I've never dedicated days at a time to painting or learning how to see (and render) the world around me better.

I think I have developed in both skill and confidence this week, dealing with strangers galore and a lot of attention whilst continuing to paint or draw. It's exposing and not so comfortable ... But tolerable and worth it.

And actually, in this day and age when so many of us are separated by screens, it's been fascinating being sat in a chair with a sketchbook or stood at an easel working in Plein air! There's clearly nothing as enticing to our fellow humans. If you ever want an antidote to the feeling of digital disconnection, get outside and get drawing! 😅

Painting the light and life of the Algarve... with the best teacher/ friend l/ guide anyone could wish for (Jantien from Chapel Cottage Studio).

Each day we set out with a mini plan - today's was to paint the cliff and sea in the loosest manner possible with acrylics and then to spend the afternoon filling our sketchbooks with anything that appeals around town (in pen, wash and colour). I did more but haven't photographed everything We were based in Burgau... Yesterday we were in beautiful Luz and I think we will be again tomorrow.

I can't catch up with the photography, we've been painting and sketching our socks off!

Work in progress

This little painting has all sorts of technical considerations not to mention PEOPLE in it! 🥴

So after a lesson on perspective, scale and vanishing point(s) we got started and little by little my Italian/ Spanish/ Portuguese Street scene is coming to life 😊

S O L D! 🤩🤩

Yipppeee!!! I'm absolutely delighted to learn that this mega seascape of a Pembrokeshire beach has found a new home!!

It was part of the student's exhibition held at Chapel Cottage Studio this last bank holiday weekend.

It's a painting I did a couple of years ago as a step by step with Jantien Powell in weekly class and I seem to remember those pebbles taking at least 6 hours (3 weeks) to complete. Loved every second of it.

This was possibly the first experience I had of how very hard it is to fight the temptation to repeat patterns.... Every single pebble needed to be a different shape and size (as they are in nature) but I had no inkling of how much my brain would want to create order and replicate ones I'd done a few moments before.

I think it's that level of active concentration and focus that is required to prevent duplication that is in fact the thing that allows your brain to relax. Nothing else (ie: the To Do list or negative self talk or rumination) can get in because you're so consumed by the wonderful task of smudging a colour into black to ensure it looks "pebbly- enough"

Time well spent!

And now I have room on my walls for another giant painting which is lucky because next on the class list for after half term is.... A seascape! Yipppeee!

A couple of weeks ago I went to a brilliant workshop with Kip Kavallares and was shown his process for creating a semi abstract still life painting.

It involves sketching in charcoal, observing tones in acrylic, blind drawing, splashy inks and plenty plenty plenty of paint on the brush, familiar from a time when I was obsessed Hash Art

Throughout the day we made many paintings whilst listening to soul, reggae and Motown and immersed in his studio full of colour and light. Bliss! 🎶

I loved every minute and am very proud of my final piece. Although I had to tinker a bit at home with adding lines and shadows, but I think it's worked!

Finished this last night Chapel Cottage Studio
Loved watching what happens to pen and the various different inks when they come into contact with water.

This one was all about flow, colour and, as Jantien Powell would say, "unravelling the edges"....

H E L L O

My friend just sent me through some of her snaps of me on our recent micro holiday together and I love them. She caught me doing what I enjoy most which is smiling, looking at BIG views and being a tiny bit nosy. I like to think I'm just curious 😉
It's so enjoyable being in a place where your curiosity is so heightened you find yourself peering over walls, through gaps and round corners. Or putting on sunglasses so you can stare a bit longer at that incredible get-up a stranger is wearing... Just generally dropping some of the social etiquette that dominates usual life and instead following your senses and instincts.

So anyway, I thought I'd post her pics with a quick hello and introduction.

It's been almost a year since I decided to "go for it" and put my art out there a bit more and I've had nothing but lovely support from friends and family.

Since being a child, I have always painted or drawn in privacy. Apart from a short unfulfilling stint at Art School which hindered rather than helped my self esteem and sense of progress. The 90s was a funny time and everything felt very loaded towards conceptual art.
But coming back to art as a hobby has felt good.

It was hard with young children and a small cluttered house, and I didn't do much for many years. But the chance sighting of a framed painting on a friend's wall a few years ago led me to Chapel Cottage Studio

The most nurturing art school I've ever encountered!

My lovely husband gave me a voucher for a term's courses and I haven't stopped going since. Under Jantien Powell's patient instruction I've really grown to love creating art again and I've definitely gained in confidence under her guidance.

So here, we are. I'm working as a voice actor on a podcast for children that I adore (Koko Sleep 🐨💜) and in my spare time I can be found painting at my easel in my dining room .. or ducking round corners looking for who knows what!

I'd love to hear from you and if you like what you see, I have and am interested in putting my work in so please let me know in the comments!

P R O G R E S S

I started this canvas a few days ago and can't stop. The images of the Amalfi coast are so dreamlike I'm probably afraid they'll dissemble and I won't be able to capture them faithfully. I've never been quite so distracted by wanting to paint. It's new and a bit all consuming (sorry family!)
I started this on Friday and it's now Tuesday. I think it's coming along nicely but I still have a few conundrums to work out....
