654 10th Ave, Manhattan, New York
Around 1 am on Dec. 9, 1939, mob-affiliated longshoreman David “The Beetle” Beadle enter the Spot Bar and Grill at 46th St. and 10th Ave. in Hell’s Kitchen. He had been out dancing with his wife, and his brothers and their spouses earlier that night but stopped by the restaurant for a glass of water to take a pill for his heart condition. This decision proved more deadly than any medical condition the mobster had.
Beadle took a few steps outside of the bar when a taxi pulled up and two men stepped out and fired away. Beadle received several bullets to the head and dropped dead on the sidewalk. The gunmen re-entered the cab and drove off. The gun used to fill Beadle with holes was found under a car a half a block away. David Beadle lived at 43-21 193rd St. Flushing, NY at the time of his murder.
The scene of his grisly murder carried out as part of a gangland turf war over control of the docks was immortalized by crime scene photographers and remains a ghastly sight to this day.

547 Grand street, Brooklyn. NY
November 10th 1932
The bombing of Benjamin "Bugsy" Siegel's Social club and headquarters. This bombing would lead to the Government's discovery of an organized gang of Jewish gunmen for hire. Eventually called Murder Inc.
In the days of the Dutch Schultz, Waxey Gordon beer wars the Bugs Meyer gang would share the contract work of protecting Gordon's New jersey interests with another gang of Jewish gunmen out of Philadelphia. With the formation of The Commission and Meyer Lansky leaving the streets to take a seat next to Luciano at the table of bosses. The leadership of the Bugs Meyer gang was handed solely to Siegel, Meyer directed all contract work for the Commission would be given to Bugs and his men.
This angered the rival crew from Philadelphia and they decided if Bugsy and his crew were gone the Commission would direct all contract enforcement to them. On November 10th Siegel and his men were playing cards on the second floor of 547 Grand street when their Philly rivals lowered a bomb down the chimney of Bugsy's headquarters with the hopes of killing the whole gang in bombing.
Siegel was dug out from the wreckage of the blast and rushed to the hospital by his men with a fractured skull. When men from the rival Philly gang were spotted surrounding the Hospital, Siegel was then secretly taken out of the hospital to recover in a secret location.

Joseph "Joe Z, Joe the Book" D'Ercole
November 1911 - May 1976
5' 7" 210 lbs, Former Mangano/Gambino family member living at (428 East 116th Street, Harlem, New York) whose official listed employment was listed as "Bouncer" at the Delightful Luncheonette at East 116th street and 1st Avenue. Was described in Newspapers in the late 50's as a "Controlling member" of the Gambino family. He was involved in large scale narcotics sales and auto theft.
Twenty five year old D'Ercole was arrested in 1936, Along with nine other members of the then Mangano and Genovese Family members at the Manhattan Social club at (354 East 114th Street, Harlem, New york) in connection with the murder of "Dutch" Schultz and his three bodyguards in Newark, New Jersey, on October 23. 1935. Police traced a car found at the murder scene back to Social club member and Genovese family member Joseph "Joe Stutz" Tortorici, and raided the social club on January 7 1936. It turned out that Tortorici had lent his car to Schultz bodyguard Bernard Rosenkrantz on the day of the hit. But since there no direct connection with the murder, Tortorici, D'Ercole and their crew were only charged with vagrancy.
In the early 1950s a Bronx based front for a large scale Auto theft ring was established by D'Ercole under the name of United Drive yourself. Using the name joseph Romano, D'Ercole and his associates resold over one hundred stolen cars within its first week of operation in October 1953.
In 1964 D'Ercole was sentenced to twenty years in prison for he**in distribution, He died sixteen years later.

September 18 1925. Corner of Bayard and Mott street. When most people think of Manhattan Chinatown, Little Italy area in the 20's they mostly think of men like Luciano and other Italian known Gangsters. But during the early and mid 20's the area was in the middle of a Chinese Tong war that at times could leave dozens of injured or dying Chinese gang members. This was one. Notice the same decorative fire escape today as was then just above the basement entrance.

Kings of the Westside 1959 - 1973

Mickey Spillane was one of a long line of bosses of the Hells Kitchen neighborhood, that included Owney "The Killer" Madden, Eddie McGrath and John "Cockeye" Dunn and Spillane's predecessor Hughie Mulligan.

Having worked as a runner for Hughie Mulligan, Mickey Spillane eventually took over as boss of Hell's Kitchen when Mulligan stepped aside. Spillane would be last the last real neighborhood boss of the Westside.

A young Mickey Spillane made the news having been pictured lying on the sidewalk, after been shot by police in an attempted robbery of the Roxy Theater in 1952. After hospitalization Mickey Spillane would be sentenced to four years in prison.

Spillane inherited the gambling, loan sharking and other rackets from Mulligan but werent involved with the sale of drugs in the neighborhood. Spillanes gang would often kidnap mobsters for ransom in order to fund other rackets. Mickey Spillane was known as the Last Gentleman Gangster, Spillane would rule over Hell's Kitchen throughout the 60' & 70's.

Mickey Spillane would marry Maureen McManus, part of the McManus family who were tied into Tammany Hall, New Yorks political machine, Tammany Hall had a long history of corruption and was as much part of Irish life in New York as was Hell's Kitchen.
In the 1970's while under investigation by an assistant district attorney, Spillane, Hughie Mulligan and other mobsters from the Westside were dragged in front of a Grand Jury that were investigating corruption within the New York Police Department.

Under questioning Spillane plead the fifth many times until the DA asked "Are you related to the other Mickey Spillane? The famous writer" Spillane replied "No. but Id be happy to change places with him right now" The court room erupted into laughter, however, the judge wasnt amused and sentenced Spillane to 60 days for contempt of court.

As the 70's were getting underway trouble was beginning to brew between the Irish Mob and Italian Mafia. Spillane had inherited a relationship with the Genovese Family, the two shared in the rackets in Madison Square Garden and the New York Coliseum, Spillane didnt appear to be happy to share the rackets.

A problem arose between the Irish Mob and the Mafia when Eli Zicardi, a Genovese associate was kidnapped by some of Spillane's gang and held for ransom. Kidnapping mobsters was seen as a legitimate tactic that could earn up to $15,000 for the release of the mobster. However, this time something went wrong, Zicardi was never seen again after the ransom was paid. This set up a confrontation between Spillane and Fat Tony Salerno of the Genovese Family.

The tensions between the Irish and Italian mobs spilled over during the constructiion of the Jacob Javitts Center being built firmly in Spillane's territory, which Spillane maintained control over. Fat Tony Salerno had hired Joseph "Mad Dog" Sullivan to take out Spillane's top guys, including Spillane's main man Tom Devaney. Sullivan also killed Edward "The Butcher" Cummiskey, who was once with Spillane but had changed sides to work with Jimmy Coonan and his gang.

During the tensions that Spillane had with the Genovese Family, another problem had arisen within Hell's Kitchen in the form of new gangsters, the so called Westies, led by Jimmy Coonan. Coonan, however joined forces with the Gambino Family.

With all the tension within the neighborhood, Mickey Spillane moved from Hell's Kitchen to Queens. On the night of the 13th of May 1977, Mickey Spillane was murdered, supposedly by Roy DeMeo a mobster within the Gambino Family and Jimmy Coonan's contact.

The death of Mickey Spillane marked the end of an era for the Irish Mob on the Westside of Manhattan and Hell's Kitchen in particular.
To this day the Spillane's are still very much part of Hell's Kitchen, though it's now gentrified and not anything like it used to be. The family own Mickey Spillane's bar.
