Functional Glass Pipe “Triceratops” by Ryan “Buck” Harris (). This amazing art piece has been added to the Museum of Glass () permanent collection.

👇 More details below👇
Repost from :
Today’s Art of the Week is a new acquisition in MOG’s permanent collection! “Triceratops” is an intricate, fully functional glass pipe painstakingly flameworked by artist Ryan “Buck” Harris (). Harris owns and operates his own studio on the central Oregon coast and has a reputation for sculpting these unexpected – and awesome – pieces. Adapting hot-glass techniques to create pipes started in the 1980s, when flameworker Bob Snodgrass began making small pipes to sell at Grateful Dead concerts. Like street artists, this community of pipe-makers developed largely underground over the next forty years, pushing the technical boundaries of this torch-based sculpting technique well beyond its traditional use to create paperweights and marbles.

“Triceratops” is an example of this complex, and once taboo, artform. It bridges the gap between functional and fine art and is the first example of functional glass pipes to be accepted into the Museum’s Permanent Collection, the tip of an iceberg of innovative and avant garde glassmakers.

For my part, I created 3 cabochons and had them photographed by . They were cropped and printed with metallic dyes on silver containing paper, and laminated onto 24"x36" acrylic sheet. This bridges the gap between borosilicate pendants and fine art for me, and I'm very pleased with the way they came out. The cabochons detail is brought into a whole new context with these large scale prints. I'd like to say thank you to my lovely wife and for assisting me in the studio as I am still currently disabled. All these works are available for purchase. Please contact .

Reminiscing.
Piece by David Colton. Featured in Corning Museum of Glass as part of the ‘New Art Now’ exhibit, May 2019.

David Colton has been pushing the limits of pipe art for a long time. Colton Glass]

Integrating elements of graffiti into the world of pipemaking. Camouflaging the functionality of pipes allows a larger audience to appreciate the artistic elements of these pieces.

Good write up by Corning Museum of Glass]
Repost • Corning Museum of Glass] Pipemaking is one of the most important areas of glassmaking today. Many contemporary pipemakers got started during a time where ma*****na was illegal throughout the United States and they created pipes that concealed their function. David Colton’s pipe references that very recent moment in pipemaking history with a nearly hidden function and its graffiti-like form illustrates the possibilities of this art form. Explore David’s work and see what else artists and designers are doing with glass today in “New Glass Now,” on view through January 5. “Untitled, Corning Museum,” David Colton (United States, b. 1974). Check out the and Hilltop Artists] “Gather” Exhibit! Celebrating 27 years of the Hilltop Artists programs.

This pieces by Evan Schauss is called “Jenga”

Repost • Hilltop Artists] Opening Day is 3.26 at 10 AM!!!!!!!!!!!!! CAN YOU BELIEVE IT!

Great work to Trenton and everyone else that worked so hard to make this exhibit a reality. We are so impressed by all the effort and coordination it took to put together this collection.

There is a Member's Opening Evening Event tonight hopefully you have already RSVPed!

"In 1994, Hilltop Artists was developed with the intention of providing a creative space for ‘at risk’ youth—at risk of dropping out of school, or of getting involved with drugs or gangs, or of becoming a ‘Menace to Society.’

Well-known artists were offered residencies and at-risk youth from the Hilltop neighborhood were invited to help them create their art.

Over time the program evolved from being Hilltop Artists in Residence, where professional artists were in residence on the Hilltop, to Hilltop Artists, where young people from the Hilltop learn to become artists in their own right."
