About Us

Located in the buffer zone of George Town Unesco Heritage site, Georgetown Mansion is one of the many colonial mansions that stood the test of time. It is a magnificent mansion built in 1879 that showcases the rich historical past of the local architecture and cultural scene of Penang.

Before restoration works begin, the building was in an implorable state with major sections of the building ruined and collapsed due to neglect and fire happened years ago. Until Year 2018, it was with the determination and foresight of Peter Soon, the owner of Pinang Peranakan Mansion, another great mansion in George Town, alongside Ar. Ooi Bok Kim, a local architect specialises in the restoration of heritage buildings and with the assistance of many more local craftsmen, the building was immaculately restored to its former glory.

Architecturally, the mansion showcases the grand structure of an european mansion, usage of cast iron on doors and air well throughout the interior are visible and with a hint of Malay design characteristics that one could differentiate it through the ‘moon’ and ‘star’ mouldings in the centre of the mansion, traditional wood carvings under the tip of roofings coupled with the usage of wooden doors and louvred windows carried over from a Malay kampong house. All these serve as a reminder of the nation’s rich history.

Upon completion of extensive restoration, the mansion will be repurposed as a museum housing the private collection of Mr Peter Soon and it is opened for public viewing. Peter Soon, the man whom is known as the pioneer of preserving, reshaping and introduce the cultural heritage of the Peranakans in Penang and Malacca to the world has made it clear that preserving the tangible and intangible cultural assets of the locals will always be his priority.
