Mario Antón
Malus indulgeo, 2024
Mixed media on board
70 x 70 cm

New exhibition by at Capilla de Gràcia, Alaior in Menorca alongside permanent artworks by Marina Abramović.

"Eden® is an invitation to reflect on the complex relationship between material needs and spiritual aspirations in the context of modern consumerism. Mario's work motivates us to reconsider whether the market's promises of well-being really lead to a fulfilled life or whether, on the contrary, excess and ambition detract from a deeper search for meaning and mystical connection.

Each of the pieces that make up this exhibition acts as a mirror that reflects the interaction between the material and the emotional aspects of life. It is more than a conversation between two works; it is an emotional and philosophical journey that challenges one to look beyond the superficial and seek a deep harmony between the inner and outer world, speed and patience. A call to introspection and empathy, to observe and to feel, to connect with spiritual roots and with nature, playing with the frenetic sound of a supermarket in a place where transactions are purely spiritual.

Let the future be decided in small places, 2022
Acrylic and graphite on canvas

“ In my works there is an abundance of semi-abandoned constructions that appear contained by theatre stands. As if we were the last spectators of some function to which we either arrived early or late, in these works the surrounding natural space appears to take the central role. The apparent “lack of event” allows me to develop scenes where the dispute is situated inside and outside,
as if centre stage comprised the stage, the backstage and the surrounding building.
The landscape allows me to displace the main role of the human in order to propose places where, although we are “out of shot”, we are no longer the only actors. The series of works The
past will have been a strange planet shows small canvases painted with acrylic and graphite where storage rooms, obsolete machinery and improvised tests on architectural remains coexist with our waste, vegetation and non-human animal"

Sofía Fernández Stenström’s work is defined by the use of photography as a memory device. This practice dates from her first approach to photography as a family register, that evolved towards thematic representations like motherhood, affections and identity.

Based on the exploration of themes such as melancholy, despair, and the fragility of human relationships, the artist through her lens, seeks to invite the viewer to recognize themselves emotionally within the faces and bodies of the portrayed characters.

A call to introspection and empathy, to observe and to feel, to connect with spiritual roots and with nature, playing with the frenetic sound of a supermarket in a place where transactions are purely spiritual.

A space where art becomes a bridge between the tangible and the intangible, a place to find a refuge for the soul amidst the hustle and bustle of modern consumerism that reminds us that, in the unbridled pursuit of material goods, we often lose sight of the essence of what it means to be human."

Oil on Canvas
140x230 cm

Ernesto’s work revolves around the construction of the image within the pictorial and cinematographic languages.
He becomes a storyteller where its protagonists represent his response to the world around us and essentially to nature and human feeling.
In Ernesto’s art the concept of repetition creates images that cover a larger space of reality.
Through painting, the passage of time is explored.

VISION ON THE CLOUDS

In his work Serzo acts as a narrator of fables and tales, presenting other possible universes and building worlds that transcend reality. These worlds, far from being a refuge from a hostile panorama dominated by pessimism and violence, presents a positive alternative, a hopeful platform from which to approach and transform art and life.

Mario explores the different stories behind each triptych, and his work of process: from analysing the iconology of each of them to get inspiration, the manual work he does by removing the original painting and preparing the wood, to finally create a new imaginary and iconology maintaining the original spirit of each triptych, reinterpreting the image and the original message and its symbolism with a new language.

The works emanate from Mario’s constant interest in ancient art, especially medieval and Renaissance devotional painting. All of his triptychs work with the restoration technique in reverse. Like the paintings that have inspired him, they are vivid, realistic and silent works that make us reflect on the past, present and future. His works are designed in such a way that they serve to cultivate knowledge about how to be in the world, to develop a deep understanding of our presence on this planet.

ALINA AT PAUL’S HOUSE 2022
13X18 CM EDITION OF 15

The femininity, the n**e, and the body are recurring elements in her body of work, with the intention to express an emotive charge of intimacy through the portrayed character that merges into dreamlike environments, more than scenarios, nature and the home are presented as primitive habitats of life, as more than a mere space where the personal relationships perspire in their most organic environment.

"Essays for a Great Work” is part of the Conexiones cycle, which is carried out by the ABC Museum and the Fundación Banco Santanderand curated by Óscar Alonso Molina.

he artist shows us for the first time in a monographic way a fundamental facet of his work: drawing. Once again, the protagonists of the pieces are Blinky Rotred, the artist’s own alter ego, and his daughter Maya (in action and in real life), who we have already seen in many other moments of his work.

Serzo skillfully handles the showy displays of classical composition, anatomy, foreshortening and the ornamental display of the sets. The aim behind the decoration is to address other, deeper issues: the ethics of our behaviour towards others; the relations between man and the world and conscience as a fundamental tool which, as he says, has been “overpowered by fatherhood, with the appearance of Maya in his life and work".

“ To make sculpture means a life-long commitment, that’s what it means. It means to follow the direction of the work that I opened myself and to try to make the most abstract proposals inside of it. To develop my own work and incorporate what is necessary to keep it being open and vital”.

Richard Serra - Sculptor of Steel and Time

Serra’s artistic activity in the 1960s coincided with the emergence of minimalism, a movement with which he shared many interests.

From 1970 until today, he has worked mainly with steel, a material usually associated with architecture and engineering, both disciplines to which the artist often turns to understand the origin of sculpture.

When using steel, the scale of his works increases drastically. The pieces can no longer be considered discreet objects; their meaning and construction cannot be separated from their environment and cannot be experienced without walking around them. This creates a radical change in perception for the viewer, who must move through the work in order to understand the totality of the piece.

In the study of temporality and how we make absent things present, we mainly focus on ways of making present the past. Instead, little has been said about making present what could be, or will be in the future. Together, Sofia Stenström, Santiago Talavera, Ernesto Crespo, and Mario Anton address the different forms of personification of the future.
