Asian Art in London opens today and once again we are showcasing a range of modern Japanese prints and paintings, at my home in London. We are also pleased to be exhibiting works by newly discovered print artist, Gofran Tariq.

Kerr first introduced me to her work following her exhibition in Saudi Arabia’s Misk Art Institute. The young Saudi-Sudanese artist is a recent graduate of Riyadh’s Prince Sultan University, and is gaining attention in the region for her sensitive and delicate subject matter.

In this recent set of prints, Tariq’s subject reflects the two cultures that are central to her own identity – Sudanese and Saudi. Using studio photography at the centre of the project, she draws out the traditional identifiers that complement her own place in society. As two cultural identities are woven together, a celebration of the generations of Sudanese people in Saudi Arabia is highlighted - an emotive use of colour and texture symbolise the cultures in dialogue. Her medium of printing, done by layering four colours (cyan, magenta, yellow, and black) on top of each other to re-create art or a realistic image with only four screens.

We would be delighted to show these works to you, and are open by appointment for viewing.

It’s that time of the year again…

Save the date for Asian Art in London 2023, 26 October - 4 November. I will be welcoming guests on a by appointment basis to discover a selection of recent acquisitions, and masterpieces from the collection, including works by master printmakers, Daniel Kelly & Clifron Karhu as well as paintings by Kazuko Shiihashi. More details to follow in the coming weeks, but please do get in touch directly if you wish to plan a visit.

On the 1st November I’ll be hosting an informal talk, discussing highlight works in my collection, as well as introducing a few new artists. Numbers will be limited - I’ll be sharing a dedicated newsletter soon with further details.

In addition to the annual Asian Art in London activities, I’ll also be welcoming over friends Shin and Daisuke from The Tolman
Collection, on Saturday 14th and Sunday 15th October between 2 -6pm. They’ll be bringing a beautifully curated set of prints by Toko Shinoda, Katsunori Hamanishi and Iwami Reika that will all be available for purchase.

Join us this week at for Asian Art in London's Summer exhibition, 28th & 29th June, where we will be exhibiting two beautiful original works by Japanese contemporary artist, Kazuko Shiihashi.

Shiihashi's delicately produced works are made of Japanese handmade paper, crushed, gilded and painted, then spread on identical wood panels (each 90 x 30 cm), which, when assembled, vary between lengths of 1.2 and 3 metres. This gives her work a deeply textural flavour, and her use of natural mineral pigments add to the jewel-like quality of her paintings - come and see for yourself.

“As an art form of the perceptions, abstract would have to be the purest. Call it the power to aid, to guide perhaps, the workings of the human heart… “Calligraphy” on the other hand, used in the writing of literature, is limited solely to a certain single realm. Neither is superior or inferior to the other, both are important types of work within me, there being two things within me.” Toko Shinoda, 2012.

18th October - 5th November

Kamal Bakhshi Modern Asian Art is pleased to announce an exhibition of paintings by the late Japanese artist Toko Shinoda (1913–2021) organized in conjunction with William Davie.

The paintings on view are drawn from the period that spans Shinoda’s return to Tokyo from New York in 1958 up until her death in 2021. Throughout this extensive period Shinoda came to fully harness and explore the possibilities of two determining artistic points in her life.

SHIRAKAWA KIRIDOSHI
Shirakawa-dori, a residential neighbourhood on the eastern side of Kyoto that follows the path of the Takano River. Depicted in here in a wintery scene, with blue skies, show fall and bare trees. One again Karhu perfectly captures the scene in his bold, dramatic cuts of the woodblock - the print presents the viewer with a dramatic composition; large trees are the initial focal point, break- ing through the image from top to bottom. With the gorgeous blue of the Takano river splitting the print in half. Nature becomes city as you cross the bridge into town.

The forestry in the foreground may be an entrance to the ancient Kiridoshi pass, a road joining Kyoto to Kamakura and Fujisawa.

ZODIAC MURAL; YEAR OF THE DRAGON
A decorated dragon emerges from stylised flames, mountains and smoke in this spectacular 1988 print by Clifton Karhu, produced in celebration of the zodiac Year of The Dragon. Unusually wide and thin, the dragon takes up the majority of the composition, with Mount Fuji pearing through in the centre of the print, red flames to match the beasts eyes and blue smoke complimentng both Fuji and the decorative dragon to the left of the images.

The English text reads: “DREAM DRAGONS DREAMING DRAGONS AND LIFE WILL BECOME A DRAGONS TAIL,” repeated in Japanese to the right of the print.

CHERRY BLOSSOMS
Does anything epitomise Japan more than the blooming of Cherry Blossoms? The rich pink tones of the flowers perfectly embody the intensity of the annual bloom; the abstract form of the blossoms in Karhu’s print follow the grain of the wood, echoing the feeling of nature within the print. The traditional Japanese house with verandas and shutters restricts the viewers eye of the blooming trees, as though you were walking down one of Kyoto’s side streets peering into a neighbours garden. Finished with heavy black lines in signature Karhu fashion the print is a fantastic addition to any modern Japanese print collectors collection.

CAKE SHOP
The aroma of fresh Japanese ichigo cake, mixed with the homely scent of fresh bread wafting through the noren of the local cake shop. You can almost smell the scent of the bakery in Karhu’s 1990 print.

Created in bold, striking cuts the print shows the exterior of a neighbourhood Cake Shop - a fresh breeze blows the entry curtains open to the street outside. The palette of reds, yellows and greens surrounded with the thick black outline are a signature of Karhu’s; an almost cartoonised depiction of the scene, this style is further strengthened by the smiling character on the curtains. The swinging chochin outside the store welcomes guests inside with its message “御御御” - lantern for the Gods.

BASIC TRANSPORTATION
A 1971 print by Clifton Karhu, comprised of 6 individual images, each depicting a means of
transportation in Japan: from balancing on ones head to ox and cart, this print is a perfect embodiment of the day to day scenes from Karhu’s life in Kyoto. The simple colour palette is both bright, and sophisticated: reds, blues and greens take pride of place as the backdrop for each scene, with heavily outlined scenes telling the story.

Kenrokuen Tea House
Uchihashi-tei, floating over the Kasumiga-ike pond, is one of the tea houses situated in Kenroku-en Garden. The tea house was originally built in 1776 before being relocated in 1874, after the pond was enlarged. The autumn leaves shroud the secluded tea house as it sits stilted over the water’s edge. The perspective from the orange-blazed leaves of the tree looming in the foreground gives the tea house a private impression as the calm ripples on the water’s brilliant-blue surface leaves a lasting imprint of tranquil natural beauty. Karhu utilises his signature bold lines and edges to outline a finely poised radiant palette in order to capture the season’s vibrant colour yet still maintain the simple charm of the scene.

HIGASHI KAIKAROU
Kaikarou is a two-hundred-year-old tea house situated in the Higashi tea house district in Kanazawa, Ishikawa Prefecture, just over two-hundred kilometres north of Kyoto. Karhu sets the scene during Tsuyu, the rainy season considered a vital part of Japan’s wellbeing, giving life across the country. The understated grey-blue tones on the tea house’s exterior capture the rainy mood, further highlighted by the skilfully portrayed haku’u (‘sudden shower’). The positioned green geta in the entrance, leading to the simple warm red of the staircase, offers an alluring sanctuary from the downpour.

FUKUCHIYAMA
Fukuchiyama by Clifton Karhu is an evening scene showcasing northern Kyoto’s illustrious
Fukuchiyama castle. Produced in an array of blue tones, the print has an almost cinematic composition; the castle itself, using only a third of the woodblock, is shown as a backdrop, with the textured, blue rock face engulfing the rest of the frame. A heavily cut black tree trunk cuts through the image on the right hand side adding a wonderful depth to the scene.

AFTERNOON ROOFS
Afternoon Roofs is an aerial view of the Kyoto cityscape. Rooftops fill the composition from top to bottom - the brown ceramic tiles roll across the paper in hues of brown and beige, with specks of green, red and yellow as trees breakthrough the dense architecture, and light spills from the residents below.
