Sacramento was recently ranked 30th out of 100 cities by the Trust for Public Land for its outstanding park system. 85% of Sacramento residents live within a 10-minute walk of a park.

For more than 175 years—from its initial John Sutter Jr. land grants in 1849—the City of Sacramento has built and maintained a robust system of parks, parkways, and open space that today covers more than 4,300 acres.

We are proud of our work to connect our community to Sutter's Fort State Historic Park, located in the heart of Midtown. This urban park provides valuable health and wellness benefits to those who live and work in this part of Sacramento.

Another great school field trips season completed! We are glad to support these programs at Sutter's Fort State Historic Park!

That’s a wrap! The staff at Sutter’s Fort said goodbye this week to the last class to participate in the Environmental Living Program for this school year.

We are thankful to the teachers of the 49 schools that participated in our Environmental Living Program (the overnight program) and the Environmental Studies Program (our all day program). We had 2,142 students and 1,414 chaperones take part in making rope, dipping candles, baking bread in an outdoor oven, and many other activities, while learning about the complex history of Sutter’s Fort and 1840s California history.

We are also grateful for our nonprofit partner, the Friends of Sutter's Fort, for providing support and many of the materials needed to help keep program costs down and making an equitable experience for all schools.

What are we doing now? Getting ready for next school year! Teachers, if you are interested in applying, email [email protected].

As we bid farewell to Preservation Month (celebrated throughout the country in May), we take this opportunity to remember that historic preservation isn't just about safeguarding buildings and sites. It's about preserving stories and experiences. Stories and traditions are passed down through generations along with photos, artwork and clothing.

We are proud to be a part of the efforts at Sutter's Fort SHP over the last 5 years to tell a more inclusive, complete and accurate history. This allows for the preservation of the stories of all of the people who lived, worked and traveled through Sutter's Fort.

We encourage you to discover or rediscover the unique historic sites of your local region and the regions you visit this summer. When you visit a historic site or attend a cultural event you help support historic preservation efforts.

As we end the month of May, we come together to celebrate Asian American and Pacific Islander (AAPI) Heritage Month—a time to honor the profound contributions, rich cultures, and diverse histories of AAPI communities across the United States.

We are thrilled to share an insightful article by the Sutter’s Fort Curatorial Department, which delves into a unique artifact from the expansive Sutter’s Fort Museum Collection—a bamboo hat that belonged to a Chinese immigrant named Ah Foo. This hat offers a glimpse into the lives of Chinese immigrants who came to California during the Gold Rush era.

No documentation of Ah Foo’s arrival in California exists, though later censuses indicate that he came to the U.S. in 1855 at the age of 15. The first census to document what is verifiably him isn’t until 1870. There he is listed as living with seven other Chinese men all identified as miners. Ten years later, in 1880, the now 40-year-old Ah Foo is sited as a partner in a mining company among three other men of Chinese birth. He would continue to mine for at least another twenty years. By 1912 he was living with and working for Margaret Kelley, founder of the James Marshall Pioneer Museum in Kelsey.

Learn more about this hat and Ah Foo on our website in an article written by the curatorial team at Sutter's Fort State Historic Park. https://suttersfort.org/2024/05/ah-foos-bamboo-hat/

Our partners at California State Parks, along with Caltrans shared these important tips for Memorial Day weekend:

🪣🪣Here are a few simple tips to help keep public spaces (like state parks!) and communities free from litter and debris, such as:

🎒Pack it in, pack it out. Leave no trace behind by bringing a trash bag, especially if visiting a remote area. Put food waste, napkins, single-use food wrappers, and other waste in the bags until it can be properly disposed of
👜Choose reusable over single-use items. Reusable containers keep harmful toxins out of our water and community recreation areas and are more economical in the long run. If you do use cans or plastic bottles, be sure to properly recycle them to help mitigate their impact.
🧬🧬Pick up small, littered items to make a big impact. Keep an eye out for bottle caps, food wrappers, cigarette butts, and other small items and be sure to properly dispose of them.
🗑Properly dispose of broken large items, such as pop-up canopies, beach chairs, and coolers. Leaving these items on the beach or park or ‘near’ a trash bin can be considered illegal dumping. Please haul back broken items and dispose of them properly at a local garbage site.
🛻Secure your load. Whether you live nearby or are traveling to reach your destination, be sure to properly tarp and tie down items in truck beds, trailers, and boats to ensure items make it to your destination and do not fly out during the trip. Taking special care to keep items both small and large with you during transit will help keep our roads safe and clean.

Thank you for helping to keep our parks, beaches and communities safe and clean!

Unlock and share California's past with us during Big Day of Giving! Your donations this week will help us create something extraordinary: a new website portal that features online digital exhibits. This platform will provide immersive storytelling and access to treasures from the Sutter’s Fort Museum Collection.
Artifacts include furniture, tools and artwork, along with thousands of photographs and documents. Due to the difficulty to control the environment in the historic structures of Sutter’s Fort, many of these items are not currently accessible to the public. Your donations will help us continue working to expand the ability to exhibit these items for public viewing.
With your support, we'll bring untold stories and rare artifacts to light, making California's history accessible to all. Join us in this groundbreaking endeavor!

🧵🔍 Every thread tells a story! This decorative handkerchief was donated to Sutter’s Fort by Harriet Hoyt in 1932 and is now part of the expansive Sutter's Fort Collection. The handkerchief is printed with text and illustrations in red on a linen cloth, depicting the old English nursery rhyme, The House That Jack Built.
Near the top left corner, just over the first line of the poem two letters are embroidered: a J and a backwards P. Through this unique marking our team was able to connect this object to John Perry, a merchant during the Gold Rush.
John Perry was born in Rhode Island and married Eliza Mann in 1845 and moved to California in the mid-1850s. In 1856 the Sperry and Perry Hotel in the town of Murphys opened as an operation co-owned by James Sperry and John Perry. It still operates today in the town of Murphys as the Mitchler Hotel, one of the oldest active hotels in the state! ater he would open the Calaveras Big Trees Hotel, a hotel famous in its day for hosting dances on a single massive tree stump, and in the vicinity of today.
How did Perry’s handkerchief become part of the Sutter’s Fort collection? Visit our website to read the entire story and view additional photos.

Looking for a good book for Earth Day? Do you enjoy reading about history, nature and science? If so, this book is for you!
You may be asking, what do beavers have to do with Sutter’s Fort? One part of history that students often learn through educational programs at Sutter’s Fort is the impact of the fur trade in California. For decades Sutter’s Fort even had a Trapper’s Camp program specifically focused on this part of California history.
During the fur trade, ships from Spain, England, Russia and the United States visited California to trade for mammal pelts (sea otters, seals and beaver) from the Native American tribes. Sea otters and seals were the primary target, but beaver pelts were desirable too. The Hudson’s Bay Company took 4,000 beaver skins from San Francisco Bay in just one year! By the 1840s the beaver population had been decimated.
In this book, Environmental Journalist Ben Goldfarb explains this history in more detail and shares how beavers can help us fight drought, flooding, wildfire, extinction, and the ravages of climate change.
