Denise Satterfield is a polymer clay doll sculptor who was taught to make art dolls by a very talented and generous Maine based artist, Hawthorne Lindsey Smith. Her work sits at the intersection of craftsmanship, cultural identity, and storytelling. Born in Brooklyn, New York, Denise’s life journey is as multifaceted as her art.

"As a dollmaker and sculptor, I am continuously amazed at the emotional connection that I form with the figures that I’ve made. Creating dolls satisfies my yearning to create, to stir emotion, and sometimes, simply to tell a story. I feel a sense of accomplishment when a doll evokes joy, or even when it evokes a sense of discomfort, especially when that discomfort translates to conversation or introspection.

My work draws from lived experience, historical fiction, fantasy, mythology, and the simple joy of creating. Whether the idea comes from me or is entrusted to me by someone else, I create each figure with anticipation, care, and a genuine love for the process.

My journey as an artist is also deeply connected to the rich history of Black dollmaking. I honor and revere my ancestors—the Black mothers, grandmothers, caregivers, and artists who created figures for many different reasons. The Black dolls they created reflected love, beauty, identity, dignity, and belonging. Their creativity and resourcefulness are part of the artistic lineage that I carry with me. This history is an important part of who I am as a creator and continues to shape the way I see and create figures."

Rebecca Skinner photographs abandoned spaces throughout the United States. A modern-day urban explorer, she seeks out neglected structures and desolate places, capturing both expansive interiors and intimate details such as peeling paint, weathered surfaces, texture, and light. She often encounters darker subject matter, revealing the stories embedded in these overlooked environments.

"Each location has a story to tell. I hope to immerse the viewer in the scene, intertwining the viewer and the location into a single narrative of nostalgia and respect for the suspended moment. I portray these facilities not only as a preserved instance of a forgotten time, but as the summation of the place's history and beauty."

Skinner brings to her work a strong ethic of leaving a location exactly as found. She does not stage her photographs-there is a story there to be told and she does not alter it. She uses natural light and a tripod for the images. Texture, color and light all play important parts in her image making.

Skinner is the owner and director of Fountain Street Gallery in Boston and a graduate of the Rhode Island School of Design.

Conversations with artists always go from 0-11 in under a second. We were lucky to share some air with Randy, Patti and Robin and later, Rose LeBeau discussing gelli print making here and ideas about presentation, experimentation and workshops. We can’t wait. If you are interested in gelli printing, we are developing a workshop.

On another note, we all agreed that life is so much happier with art and fellow artists in our lives. Five of us sat, talking—expressing how art making, expressing emotion, seeing the world and the glorious details and conversations with fellow creatives, no matter the medium can enrich us beyond belief and always bring great surprise.

Randy Akers lives in Skidaway, Georgia and was one of our first artists curated by Juniper Rag. He will be showing a group of botanical works in Truro at his Edgewood Farm Residency Truro Center for the Arts at Castle Hill Wednesday, October 28 if you are on the Cape. akerswork

"Every painting has a piece of my soul. My gift began as a child in many different mediums as a coping tool. I am a firm believer that being creative in which ever medium you choose is an incredible therapeutic technique for all ages.

I currently create with fluid acrylic paint and never use a paint brush. I manipulate the paint using various methods, blow dryer, palette knives, catalyst wedge. Using fluid paint is working with the laws of physics and motion. Gravity, chemistry and density all play equally pivotal roles making each piece unique in their own way."

Rose Mamakos is a dedicated artist that has shown in several Juniper Rag exhibitions. We are particularly drawn to her constant experimentation and the energy her paintings exude. In her abstract work, the relationships of color and contrast bring depth. It is easy to get lost in the webbing and intricacies of the maze of colors. At every exhibition people respond to her work becoming captivated.

We are thrilled to share her work VELVET, on view now at Juniper Rag Contemporary.

"Embrace the Darkness is a series that shines light on the discord between beauty and unease found in the natural world. The quiet power of transformation. Solitary presence. By removing the surrounding landscape, I strip away distraction and allow the birds to exist almost symbolically: creatures shaped by darkness yet defined by shimmering light that settles upon their feathers. Inviting us to linger, wonder, and understand that darkness is not simply something to overcome; it can be powerful and become part of us, shaping our identity, resilience, and perception. These photographs become less about identifying a bird and more about experiencing the whispers of texture, form, and light. They dare you to stop resisting the shadows and allow them to become part of your story, adding intrigue to the spaces where you dwell."

Nancy Szostak Wright is an award-winning fine art nature and wildlife photographer. Her work has quickly earned local, regional, and national recognition. In 2021, Nancy earned first place in the National Wildlife Federation photo contest for her portfolio of 10 bee images. Over the last 18 months, Nancy has been juried into 26 different art shows. She also won nine awards for her photography in that time frame and licensed five of her images for placement in local healthcare facilities to contribute art as a healing force. What inspires Nancy the most is connecting you with the colors, shapes, textures, patterns, and drama of nature. Based in Westborough, Massachusetts, Nancy believes that there is beauty all around us and she blends that beauty with stories that connect us.

Nancy’s work has been featured in several Juniper Rag exhibitions and resonates deeply with art lovers and collectors. We are excited to share her work in VELVET, on view at Juniper Rag Contemporary.

Painting in the gallery today. Experimenting with new materials. So nice to have some kids come through and let them try a few techniques. Watercolor workshops are hitting the website and we were painting and strategizing about more.

For artist, Aula Al Ayoubi, symbolism plays a central role. Recurring motifs such as pomegranates, flowing hair, and migratory birds evoke themes of identity, displacement, and transformation. Her figures often become living landscapes, carrying traces of architecture, nature, and memory, where personal and collective histories merge. Within this visual language, the feminine presence emerges as a symbol of endurance, dignity, and hope.

Aula Al Ayoubi is an award winning Syrian artist. She holds a degree in mathematics from the University of Damascus and is currently based in the United States. Ayoubi has presented numerous solo exhibitions, including Music Under the Water, Fruit of Heaven, Face Print, and Spring Revolution, across Syria, Kuwait, Saudi Arabia, Qatar, Lebanon, and the United States. Her work has been featured in art auctions and is included in museum collections.

We are excited to share her work VELVET, on view now at Juniper Rag Contemporary.

Brenda Yates creates work that embraces the power of restraint. Her practice is grounded in a deep appreciation for minimalism and the beauty that emerges when all excess is just stripped away.

At the heart of her work is the Japanese concept of Seijaku—stillness and tranquility. In our world that's filled with so much constant noise and distractions, Brenda's pieces invite us all to pause, breathe and really look. Through thoughtful composition and a refined visual language, she explores balance, simplicity and presence.

We are excited to share her work VELVET, on view now at Juniper Rag Contemporary.
