Hulda Klager Lilac Gardens

Hulda Klager Lilac Gardens Historic family farm - house built in 1889 by Hulda's parents
A non-profit organization created to preserve the Hulda Klager Lilac Gardens and premises in Cowlitz County, Washington, as a unique historic, architectural and horicultural site and landscape for the literary, scientific, educational and cultural benefit of the public. Also to promote a knowledge, understanding and appreciation of the historical hertiage of the state of Washington.

The Farm house was built in 1889, later a potting shed was added behind it, also a carriage house which has been converted to a gift shop (only open once a year during Lilac Days) and many original plants still exist on the property. There is an Executive Board that runs the garden along with the help of approximately 200 members and volunteers that maintain all buildings and grounds all year round.

Mission: To preserve this historical site for educational history and heritage for the state of Washington.

Planted these varieties from Hulda Klager Lilac Gardens a couple of years ago. Now the house is filled with fragrance (and I do mean 'filled'). It is wonderful!!! Stop by the garden between now and Mother's day to pick up a plant or two for your garden.

Well we are open! Lilac's now are at their best for blooming - such beauty around here. Just heavenly to walk around and smell the gorgeous scents! Just a little information on their scents, they come in degrees - most Lilacs are rated in the following categories - Mild, High, Very High and Extreme. Late Blooming Lilacs use a different system - Sweet, Spicy, Strong and Fragrant. So any of you who have allergies - there may be a lovely "Mild" Lilac for you such as "Dappled Dawn". Personally I keep my cut lilacs on my deck as they set my allergies off. But walking around them in the garden I'm OK as I get enough air to offset their wonderful scent. In your home garden think about having "Early", "Mid" and "Late" bloomers to have beauty longer. We also carry the "Bloomerang" which has three or four blooming cycles during the spring and thru the summer. Have a wonderful day! Patti at the Garden

Hi, I am Patti Audette - Vice President of the Lilac Gardens. I'm keeping you updated on this page. I will be keeping close watch the next couple of days and all next week on the weather. The lilac's are trying to bloom a lot more but if our weather gets really cold it could slow them down. I live at a higher elevation that the garden and mine are semi blooming (we are a little behind the garden).

We are busy, busy getting ready for Lilac Days April 18th thru May 10th. May 10th is Easter Sunday (correction - Easter is April 5th) and also Hulda's Birthday! Also Jane Kirkpatrick will be here again this year on April 26th for a book signing. I will also try to put a picture of our quilt (for our yearly raffle) on this page too. It is really beautiful as usual. I am always so amazed how lovely they turn out each year! Wish I had that talent! Stay tuned!

Here is the finished floors Lilac Garden fan's! They turned out better than we expected. There was some floor damage from a fire many years ago. Next I will add pictures taken after we added rugs donated by the same family.

These are the floors in the Farm House after we removed the carpet which was installed in the 1970's. How this came about Lilac Days 2014 when two ladies approached me in the house and asked me if we considered bringing the living room and hallway back to the wood floors. One lady generously donated funds for us to do this. I cannot publish her name yet but will when I get permission. These pictures are what we found after the carpet was removed. As you can see in the old days they just painted around the rug space. Saved paint I assume!

Just another update - if our weather gets colder it may slow down the bloom. So I will keep everyone updated. I am posting pictures of our current bloom and also things that we are working on at the garden - pictures taken yesterday at the garden

Well, the Lilac's have run their course for this year - there are a few late bloomers "die hards" but we still have gorgeous plants still blooming such as Rhoddys (such great colors) and others. Gardens are still beautiful. Remember, we are open daily for your enjoyment 10 AM to 4 PM. Thank you all who visited us this year and many thanks to Jane Kirkpatrick for once again having a book signing at the Gardens on Mother's Day, May 12th. Also to Judy Card for helping Jane and arranging her visit.

05/11/2013

Hurry on down to the Gardens!! This is our last weekend for "Lilac Days" where you can purchase plants, visit the Farm House and Gift Shop too! Also on Sunday, Jane Kirkpatrick, Author of "Where Lilac's still Bloom" based on Hulda's life, will be here for another book signing. Don't miss it - Jane is one awesome Lady! We look forward to your visit!
