Merry Christmas everyone! I hadn't realized how long it's been since sending a message about the club. Since losing the old freight station in May we have been actively searching for a new home. Many of the members still get together once or twice a week to talk trains. Sometimes at a local restaurant or a fellow members home railroad.

The conversation lately we've all had is how much we miss having the open houses around Christmas. Many of the faces we saw were there each year, sometimes at each of the open houses and not just one. We miss being a collection point for the WINC Chain of Checks too. It's a great way to be a part of the community by collecting for them.

We have gotten many messages of well wishes in the search for a new home. Some have sent ideas or points of contact. Members have looked at probably 10 to 15 potential sites but as of yet we've had no luck. We will keep searching for a new place. Many organizations such as ours spend on average 3 to 5 years when faced with rebuilding. Hopefully we can beat the odds and get something sooner.

Again Merry Christmas from all of us at The Winchester Model Railroad and we hope to see you again soon.

Well folks today makes it official. Today is the day the new owner takes over the property that has housed the Winchester Model Railroad Club for nearly 35 years. The club formed in 1982 and spent the first few years in a different location on Picadilly Street. Then moved to 430 North Cameron Street after a deal was struck with CSX Railroad to lease the property. Anyone in model railroading knows they are never truly completed. There's always something to add, something to fix or something to improve upon. Members spent years building what was there, and now members have spent weeks tearing it down and hauling it away.
Our mission while we were at 430 North Cameron Street was to maintain the property as best we could. We also built and operated the area’s largest model railroad. Being a part of First Night Winchester since it's inception and hosting other open houses allowed us to share the building and the layout with the public and fellow railroaders alike. Anyone serious about a hobby knows the thrill of sharing it with like minded people. They also know the bigger thrill of sharing it with the general public and hearing the OOOH’s and AAAH’s.
We hope the new owners continue to honor the history of a building that has stood since the 1860’s and represents so much of Winchesters past. Being the old B&O freight station one can only imagine the goods and materials that passed through those doors. Some of those materials built Winchester and the surrounding communities, other goods were sent out and provided wages and profits to local industries and the work force.

The club continues to search for a new home to build a new layout. We’ve had a couple options come along in the last 2 to 3 months but nothing that we believe fits the need. We would like to remain in downtown Winchester so we can continue to be part of First Night and also a part of the history of railroading that shaped Winchester in the early days. So, if anyone knows of a space that may work reach out to us here. The ideal space is around 2000 square feet. It doesn’t have to be fancy just dry inside and able to be conditioned with a restroom or access to one. We hope to see all our supporters soon in a new location.

Thanks. WMRRC

Doors open for the public at 9 am and the show runs until 1 PM. The club building is currently under contract with a sale pending but we have not been given a closing date or any notice of when we must vacate the building. So we are running the layout any chance we get. The open house is from 10 am until 2 PM and the location is 430 North Cameron Street Winchester Va. 22601. We also have vendor tables available. Message for pricing Hope to see you there.

Our next show and sale is coming up Saturday March 9th so make plans to come see us for all your railroad goodies from 9 until 2 at the Winchester Moose club 214 East Cork Street Winchester VA. Most of you have heard the club building is pending sale. We have yet to receive notification of the closing. So if possible we will have the layout running for the open house from 10 until 2 pm. Follow us here for future updates.

Some of you may have heard the Winchester Model Railroad Club is losing its home of 32 years. A purchaser has approached CSX and the sale of the current property is pending. It’s expected the sale will close sometime in March. Once the sale is final, we expect to have 30 days to remove the railroad from the current facility. We are looking at this as an opportunity to find a new home and build a new version of the Shenandoah and Western Railroad. We would like to ask the public for help in finding this new home.

We are a group of dedicated modelers who are building and maintaining a 1500 square foot HO Scale model railroad in downtown Winchester Va. We also maintain a collection of railroadiana and educate the public on the dangers of railroad crossings and trespassing on railroad property. We have been around for 35 years with 32 of those being in the current building. About a year ago we became a 501c3 which allows us to take donations to use towards operating expenses. Membership is open to anyone 18 and older. Anyone 18 or younger we request be accompanied by a guardian. We currently have 25 members and are always ready to welcome more.

As stated above we are in search of a new home. We hope the public can help us in our search, the power of networking is huge. What are we searching for? We need space, lots of it. We are searching for a space 40’ by 50’ for a meeting room and layout area. 12’ ceilings would be helpful so we can design the layout for crowd flow by elevating the walkway like we have in our current building. A bathroom is a necessity but it doesn’t have to be luxurious. Other than those requirements we are not too picky and we would like to remain in Winchester as we would like to continue to be a part of the community. We participated in First Night Winchester for over 30 years and we have 4 other open houses per year for the public to come see what we do.
If you have any space that may be workable for our needs, please contact us!! Thank you for the consideration.

Come see them running! We have seven trains running all over the layout!

Well that was fast, here's the latest report.

All aboard! The Winchester Model Railroad Club is departing its current station after more than 30 years. I spoke with several of the club's founding members to talk about how much of their heart and soul (and money!) has been poured into this lay out. Join us tomorrow morning on WDVM at 7 to learn more!

Well after 30 plus years we got some pretty sad news yesterday. CSX has entered into an agreement to sell the property that houses the Winchester Model Railroad. We've been told the closing will be mid January and once final we will have 30 days to remove the layout. At this time we are beginning to explore options for the future. Short term will be to focus on dismantling the layout. Anyone who has ever done this will know it's a job that isn't for the faint of heart as not much is salvageable. We do still have two remaining open houses Sunday December 23rd from 1 until 4 and First Night Winchester on New Year's Eve from 6 until 10. So pack up the crew and come see the trains running. We plan to go out on a high note and help the WINC Chain of Checks as much as we can to stuff the donation box. Share this message and get the word out. We'd like to show it off as much as possible for our last two events.

Wardensville

On May 25, 1921 the Winchester and Western Railroad was officially completed between Winchester, VA and Wardensville, WV. The railroad stretched about 40 miles in length between the two major towns. The Lost River Railroad also was located in Wardensville, WV and began where the Winchester & Western ended, allowing the Winchester Lumber Co to go deeper into WV. The Winchester&Western Railroad was a bustling freight line with limited passenger service. The first passenger car on the rail was really a railbus (see photo below). The railbus made two round trips daily to Winchester with seventeen stops in between. The most popular spot was at Capon Springs Station (where Capon Springs Resort still stands). During its heyday there were three railbuses running daily bringing tourists from Winchester for scenic tours of the Capon Springs Resort and Cacapon and Lost River. It is rumored that the Wardensville station was one of the classier stations on the route.

Read the article in the Star today. My money is on the City of Winchester being the buyer. They want to put retention ponds on both sides of the tracks in that area to help deal with their serious drainage problems downtown because of their poor past planning. Wish you well in locating a new home
