Cursive Writing Workshop at the Wichita Historical Museum!

A free, two-day program. Reservations are required.

Once a favored means of communication, cursive writing is becoming a lost art. Many schools no longer teach this valuable skill, but the Historical Museum does! Children are invited to learn and practice the skill of cursive handwriting. An experienced teacher will guide the letter formation of upper- and lower-case letters and writing your full name. We recommend coming on both days.

For children aged 7-12: June 27 and 28, 1-3 pm
For children aged 13-17: June 29 and 30, 1-3 pm

Click here to reserve a spot, or call 316-265-9314.

October 26th 10am.....SENIOR WEDNESDAY - Mapping Inequality with Donna Rae Pearson

Federal and State policies in the early 20th century restricted financial resources to African Americans for housing. Known as redlining, it was followed by another historically discriminatory practice twenty years later—urban renewal. These two programs segregated and changed communities across the nation. This presentation will explore the history of redlining and its lingering impact on today’s communities.

Donna Rae is the local historian at the Topeka & Shawnee County Public Library where she teaches people how to conduct research and works to preserve the stories of the Topeka community.

“Mapping Inequality” is part of Humanities Kansas Speakers Bureau and “21st Century Civics,” a collection of resources that invite Kansans to participate in community discussions and learn more about the history of American democracy and the shared responsibilities of citizenship. “21st Century Civics” is made possible with support from “A More Perfect Union: America at 250,” an initiative of the National Endowment for the Humanities.

Support for “Mapping Inequality” has been provided by the Freedom’s Frontier National Heritage Area.

The program will be shown on the screen in the Museum Auditorium, followed by a related tour.

Museum admission for non-members is $ 2.00 (free to members, Zoom, & FB live viewers) – reservations are required: 316.265-9314 or [email protected]

Senior Wednesdays are sponsored by generous funding through The Trust Company of Kansas and by Mickey Armstrong, hosted by WHiMS. Doors open at 9:45 a.m., program screens at 10 a.m. Tours follow at 11 a.m.

Local History Film Fest with the Harmon Sisters!
Thursday, September 22, 8pm, Heritage Square
A triple feature of local history films created by award-winning sister duo Sara and Charity Harmon!

Sponsored by J. Eric Engstrom.
Admission to this outdoor event is free.

Sara and Charity Harmon are sister filmmakers in Wichita, Kansas. Both together and individually, they write, direct, edit and produce educational, entertaining content for churches, museums, schools and other clients.

The award-winning short documentary FOR YOUR AMUSEMENT: THE WONDERLAND PARK ON ACKERMAN ISLAND tells the story of the first amusement park in Wichita, Kansas located on an island in the middle of the Arkansas River. The attraction brought in hundreds of thousands of tourists and was a staple form of entertainment before automobiles, strict Sunday laws and World War I led to its demise." This film won Best Kansas Documentary at the Doc Sunback Film Festival in 2019.

The award-winning documentary WHO SCAMMED RAJAH RABBIT? tells the story of a salesman who arrived in Wichita in 1929 and conned the city into investing in 55,000 white rabbits. The scam affected farmers, businessmen and even children." This film won Best Kansas Documentary Short at the Tallgrass Film Festival in 2021 and Best Kansas Documentary at the Doc Sunback Film Festival in 2022.

In COLOR ME WICHITA, Sara and Charity follow each other's artistic process.
Using various mediums, they challenge each other to create an art piece based on an aspect of Wichita history.

WHiMS MEMBERS:
Hello, Everyone! I’m happy to let you know that we have exciting events coming soon to our Museum! The first is a chance for you to help us at two of the “Concerts in the Garden”. Those two dates are September 21 & September 28. What we need are volunteers to “Meet and Greet” our visitors from 11:45 – 1:15. However, there are also concerts on September 7 & September 14 which Gail Williams & Alice Smith will be greeters but would welcome volunteers. If you are able to volunteer, please contact Gail Williams.

Looking ahead with exciting news. SAVE THE DATE. Moving from Spring to October 15, we will introduce the NEW BLUE MOON! We have all missed the Blue Moon and the very special event it has become. More details will follow in upcoming weeks.

And, of course, the Wreath Festival. The dates are set for November 17, 18 and 19. The planning for this favorite event is in the works, so mark your calendars and look for updates.

It will be so nice to see the action at the Museum increasing, again, and for all of us to be together at our very special place: The Wichita-Sedgwick County Historical Museum.

Exciting Senior Wednesday! AUGUST 24
Senior Wednesday - Mexican Americans of Wichita's North End with Anita Mendoza, Jose Enrique Navarro & Jay Price

Wednesday, August 24th 10am
While the North End has long been the beginning of the American dream for many peoples including African Americans, Southeast Asians, and Anglo Americans, it is perhaps the Mexican American community that most visibly embodies the hopes and struggles in this part of the city. The first wave worked in the packinghouses, and communities with names such as El Huarache, La Topeka, and El Rock Island emerged nearby. As the 20th century unfolded, their children and grandchildren established a vibrant neighborhood along Twenty-First Street and Broadway. In recent years, the old industries of the area have faded, while a new wave of immigrants from Latin America has been able to redefine an area. Today, the Mexican American heritage in the North End has become one of its most defining features, an example of a broader diversity that has always made this part of the city special.

The program will be presented in the Museum Auditorium, followed by a related tour.

Sponsored by generous funding through The Trust Company of Kansas and by Mickey Armstrong, hosted by WHiMS. Doors open at 9:45 a.m., program screens at 10 a.m. Tours follow at 11 a.m.

Reservations are required: 316.265-9314 or [email protected]. Museum admission for non-members is $ 2.00. Free to members & viewers on Facebook Live and available remotely by registering on Museum's webpage.

Photo of the Nomar Theater from our archives. Near the intersection of 21st Street and North Market, the Nomar opened in 1929 as a segregated facility with a separate entrance for African American and Mexican American patrons.

Hi, I'm looking for any records or photographs documenting the Suburban Rest Home in Wichita circa 1936. I do not have an address for it, unfortunately.
I found this photo in my great great aunts photo album. It says it was taken in Wichita in 1913. I have not been able to find anyone who knows anything about it and was hoping you might be able to help. Thank you.
anyone in the wichita historic society doing anything to make sure the city doesn't do anything stupid to the historic frank lloyd wright century ii building?
