The Kansas African American Museum endeavors to make the African American experience relevant and resonant to every Kansan. From an annual MLK Celebration to A Tribute to Trailblazers, we offer something for everyone. Once a month we host a program for seniors called “Senior Wednesday.” The program is typically tied to current exhibits. These days, designed for active seniors in our community, and are a great way to involve them in our history programming. There are great opportunities to volunteer at TKAAM, from a few hours a week to special events. We welcome your enthusiasm. "Soar Saturdays” provides fun and educational opportunities for the entire family, on the first through the fourth Saturday of each month.

Mission: To make the African American experience relevant and resonant to EVERY Kansan.

Gordon Parks often said that the only difference between him and others was an Opportunity. I'm grateful to the museum, the board of directors, directors, staff, volunteers and all who support the mission of The Kansas African American Museum(TKAAM) for allowing me the opportunity to serve as Education Director. I recently resigned from the museum and officially leave this Friday(11/02). The past five years have been absolutely priceless. I've gained more professional development, leadership skills, tough-skin and what real service looks like, than I could have ever imagined. I have an even greater respect for history and will never shake this passion I have for the way history has the power to positively impact lives in the present. This decision was hard, but necessary for me to take serving my community to the next level. My genuine prayer is that the museum reap nothing but success. Thank you and God bless!

I have to highlight a few field trip groups. They're amazing!

Thank you to all our TKAAM supporters. The Trailblazers Gala was an absolute success. It was an honor inducting the following honorees to TKAAM's Trailblazers hall of fame: Dr. Alicia Thompson, Dr. Karla Burns and Elisha Scott, Sr. The keynotes speaker was none other than Brian Black!!! He motivated us with more reasons than one to get involved with the museum and support it's mission to share the Kansas African American experience. Enjoy pic's from the event. More to come!

The Gordon Parks Signature Collection
Images From The Soul

Exhibition runs September 15 through January 19, 2019

A Kansas native, Gordon Parks is a well-known photographer, composer, writer and filmmaker. What is lesser known is that he was also a painter. Between 1965 and 2006, Parks created 50 photographic prints, using his paintings as background, in a series he called “Images From The Soul.”

The technique Parks used to create each print is testament to the creative genius that he was. The juxtaposition of painted landscape and found object creates a surreal image that could only come from the soul of an artist.

The photographic images in this exhibition are from The Kansas African American Museum’s permanent collection, with four generously loaned by local collector,
Dr. Matt Goltl.
