Society of Decorative Painters

Society of Decorative Painters We are an international community of artists working to spread the appreciation for and knowledge of decorative painting.
The National Society of Tole and Decorative Painters, Inc., was organized in 1972 to stimulate worldwide interest in and appreciation for decorative painting; to recognize diversity of and excellence in the art form; and to serve as the resource center for all aspects of decorative painting. Now known as the Society of Decorative Painters, the Society boasts a worldwide family of painters with interests as varied as the places in which they live.

We believe that anyone can learn to paint, and painting together with friends and family enriches lives. If you are a painter, you already know the value that art can bring to a life. We strive to spread that message throughout the world, and bring the joy of painting to everyone. SDP offers a variety of programs and opportunities for individual painters, painting chapters, and painting businesses. Our members receive a host of benefits and contribute to the continued growth of their favorite art form. We publish the award-winning The Decorative Painter magazine, host SDP's Annual International Conference and Expo, offer the world-renowned SDP Certification program, and much more. Weekly IMSDP History Lesson!

Traveling Trunk - Whimsical Side by Vicki Rhodes-Merryweather, CDA

The International Museum of Society of Decorative Painters (IMSDP) is the recipient of this unique trunk that was painted by Vicki Rhodes-Merryweather CDA, Trudy Beard-Lazaroe CDA, Bob Pennycook, Margot Clark, and Patte Kayne CDA.

In 2007, Vicki’s friend, Patte Kayne CDA, developed the idea to do a “Traveling Trunk” and recruited four other artists to join her on that journey. The handcrafted wood trunk was designed by Unique Woods, Arlington, Texas. Patte chose the background color and the rest was up to the individual artists as to what they wanted to paint. The trunk began its travels in 2007 going from artist-to-artist and the creativity began. The trunk designs were published in The Decorative Painter for all members to paint. Vicki’s whimsical painting on the Traveling Trunk was featured in The Decorative Painter, issue no. 1, 2008.

If you've painted these designs show us yours in the comments! Through giving and sharing we can make the history lesson a fun experience for all!

Vicki Rhodes-Merryweather, CDA was born and raised in the small farming community Tremonton, Utah. Even though she’s traveled worldwide, she feels fortunate to call it home.

Vicki feels that to broaden skills and increase knowledge that it is time well spent to study and take art classes, both in person and online. Jo Sonja Jansen MDA and the Jansen family have been an amazing influence and blessing in her life and career. Providing the opportunity to work alongside them and is forever thankful for their friendship, knowledge and influence.

Her first experience with the Society of Decorative Painters was a convention many years ago. She traveled with a friend, who was teaching and exhibiting at the show. Vicki sold her packets in the friend’s booth. She had never been that far from home nor worked so hard – but she loved every second and was hooked!

Vicki entered the SDP certification program and successfully became a CDA after a couple of attempts. The knowledge that she obtained during the process helped her with understanding color and how it affects us everyday. Vicki admits to being a total color nerd!

Vicki was in the decorative painting market for numerous years and eventually opened a gift boutique in a charming 1919 home. Due to a fire caused by faulty wiring, everything was destroyed. Vicki had given her all with the purpose of providing local children a place to develop their future and gave hope with the foundation of art.

After the devastating fire, her amazing husband quickly remodeled a two-story garage on their property for Vicki and the children to have a happy place for their art classes. Vicki teaches up to 80 students a week. These young artists are magic and Vicki loves to watch them create. She is thankful everyday for the privilege to do this and to learn from them!

Vicki hopes to continue to instill her love of art and to make a difference in the children’s lives. She invites you to visit her page “The Art Garage by Vicki Rhodes”. Prepare to be amazed at these young developing artists!

On Vicki’s bucket list is writing and illustrating children’s books. She is a member of the Society of Children’s Book Writers and Illustrators. Vicki says it’s a different market and skill set, but with her beginning roots planted in decorative art she will grow!

Vicki shares with us this quote by Roald Dahl – “Watch with glittering eyes the whole world around you, because the greatest secrets are hidden in the most unlikely places. Those that don’t believe in the magic will never find it.”

All the artwork in the IMSDP collection housed in Wichita, Kansas, requires care, cleaning, storage, display props and signage. If you’d like to help preserve the IMSDP artwork become a GEM supporter for the small amount of $25 – the amount is small, but the benefits are huge! Call (316) 269-9300. @SocietyofDecorativePainters

Is the group Cotton Tolers still meeting in the West Tennessee area?? Thanks for any info!
No live feed today? How is the certification class going?
Where are the pictures for projects for the class retreat in Fredricksburg Tx? I don't see anything but a button to pay for the retreat>
I’m a volunteer at the Frank Lloyd Wright house in College Hill. We participate every year in the Holiday Table displays at Mark Arts. This year we are recreating The peacock room from The Imperial Hotel in Tokyo which FLW was building at the same time as The Allen House. There is picture we have of a fresco piece which was hung above the room. It’s an old picture but u can see the design and the colors. You can take some liberty with the colors n design as long it’s a fairly close representation of original. The display area we have is only 10 x 8 and we have two walls. Not exactly sure how we will display the fresco. Maybe u have some ideas. The display needs to be done by November 5 or 6. I know it’s not much time but we will be happy with a representation of the fresco. There’s no need to be overly detailed. I am attaching the only color picture of the fresco I have been able to find We are obviously a non-profit organization and would need a very reasonable bid to luaus this. But the exposure for your company would be tremendous. We would include your name and company on the table sign and it would also appear in the program. Hundreds of people visit the Tables every year. Please let me know if you have questions. Thx so much. Lisa Steiner. 316 648 6270

Taken from the Decorative Painter Magazine. Thank you Miho for a beautiful design. I’ve only been painting for 1 1/2 years, hope I did it justice❤️
IMSDP – Weekly Wednesday Museum Artwork Rebecca Baer CDA was inspired by flowers in her garden when she designed, "Iris Medley". The International Museum of Society Decorative Painters (IMSDP) is the recipient of the artwork! The Museum of Decorative Painting in Atlanta, Georgia donated the painting to the IMSDP June 2018. It’s always important in a museum collection to know the provenance of the artwork. The more you know and can record, the more valuable and collectible the piece becomes. The painting in the International Museum of Society of Decorative Painters (IMSDP) is a smaller rendition of an original canvas painted in acrylics, measuring 18" x 36", which was designed for a multi-day seminar. When demonstrating the painting process, she typically recreates the design on a durable surface, whether that is an item of furniture, a frame-able substrate or, in this case, a cabinet door, so that the end result is an object with value. Rebecca was born in Baltimore, Maryland and has spent most of her life in the mid- Atlantic region of the United States. Beginning at a young age Rebecca’s talent was noticed through awards and honors at school. In early adulthood she turned to technical illustration, which greatly influenced her attention to detail as she transitioned to the role of designer. Decorative Painting became part of her life in 1993, shortly after she joined the Society of Decorative Painters (SDP) and earned the distinction of Certified Decorative Artist (CDA) in 1996. She has successfully passed the master stroke work level of the Master Decorative Artist (MDA). Rebecca is a teacher, designer and publisher of step-by-step tutorials. She began teaching at the SDP Conferences in 1996 and her class was repeated three times! Rebecca and her husband Bobby work together in their art business. Bobby handles the day-to-day operations which gives Rebecca the time to design and pursue creative product development through her trademarked name. In 2001 she launched a line of stencils which created a broad cross-market appeal and expanded into an ever-widening circle of creative friends. Rebecca and Bobby, plus their two daughters, have spent many wonderful years working together, traveling throughout the United States as well as abroad. Decorative painting has taken them countless miles allowing them to make many friends, experience other cultures and, with the exception of North Dakota and Alaska, travel through every state in our beautiful country. She appreciates a wide range of artistic styles and mediums from watercolors to china painting, oils and acrylics. Her love for the look of oils, admiration of fine detail, and penchant for water-based media influenced her original and widely recognized style, creating the look of oils with the convenience of acrylics. In more recent years she has expanded the list of mediums to include watercolors, enjoying the challenges and occasional unpredictability of this medium. It is the primary medium for her work intended for licensing. To view more of Rebecca’s artwork check out her website www.rebeccabaer.com. If you’d like to help preserve the IMSDP artwork become a GEM supporter for the small amount of $25 – the amount is small, but the benefits are huge!
