Hey Flying Fish Exhibits thanks for purchasing our Hitachi DT01411 Projector Lamps with Module https://buff.ly/2sLYoie #projector #lamps #Hitachi
Did you know the answer to today's #WhatisitWednesday? We applaud those of you who got it right 👏🏽👏🏼 (and tip our hats to those who got it wrong, but made us laugh). The kitchen mixer in the 𝘑𝘢𝘮𝘦𝘴 𝘊𝘢𝘮𝘦𝘳𝘰𝘯 – 𝘊𝘏𝘈𝘓𝘓𝘌𝘕𝘎𝘐𝘕𝘎 𝘛𝘏𝘌 𝘋𝘌𝘌𝘗 exhibition was a tool key to the creation of Isofloat®, an innovative, syntactic foam capable of withstanding the immense stress of an ocean dive to the deepest place on earth! 𝗜̲𝗻̲𝘃̲𝗲̲𝗻̲𝘁̲𝗶̲𝗻̲𝗴̲ ̲𝗜̲𝘀̲𝗼̲𝗳̲𝗹̲𝗼̲𝗮̲𝘁̲ On March 26, 2012, underwater explorer and filmmaker James Cameron made a record-breaking solo dive to the bottom of the Mariana Trench in the 𝘋𝘌𝘌𝘗𝘚𝘌𝘈 𝘊𝘏𝘈𝘓𝘓𝘌𝘕𝘎𝘌𝘙, the submersible he co-designed and engineered. To achieve this feat, the 𝘋𝘌𝘌𝘗𝘚𝘌𝘈 𝘊𝘏𝘈𝘓𝘓𝘌𝘕𝘎𝘌𝘙‘s design needed a structural flotation core of syntactic foam, a composite material of air-filled glass microspheres set into epoxy resin. Existing foams that were pressure tested to ‘full ocean depth’ warped, cracked, compressed and lost buoyancy and structural integrity. The solution? Well, this is where the mixer in our #WhatIsItWednesday challenge comes into play! Cameron’s lead project engineer in Australia, Ron Allum, worked out a way to mix the foam into a type of “meringue mixture” that was uniformly dense and extraordinarily strong. He used the domestic kitchen appliances shown to mix the small batches needed for experimentation. Allum’s mixture had twice the tensile strength of existing foams and could withstand the required pressure. When he told Cameron what he’d achieved, the director urged him to patent it. It was named and patented as Isofloat®. The Isofloat® samples shown in front of the kitchen appliances demonstrate how building blocks of Isofloat® were bonded to create the strong and structurally integrated flotation core of the 𝘋𝘌𝘌𝘗𝘚𝘌𝘈 𝘊𝘏𝘈𝘓𝘓𝘌𝘕𝘎𝘌𝘙. To find out more about the revolutionary design of the 𝘋𝘌𝘌𝘗𝘚𝘌𝘈 𝘊𝘏𝘈𝘓𝘓𝘌𝘕𝘎𝘌𝘙 visit 𝘑𝘢𝘮𝘦𝘴 𝘊𝘢𝘮𝘦𝘳𝘰𝘯 – 𝘊𝘏𝘈𝘓𝘓𝘌𝘕𝘎𝘐𝘕𝘎 𝘛𝘏𝘌 𝘋𝘌𝘌𝘗, on display now at The Durham Museum » DurhamMuseum.org/cameron . . . Explorer and filmmaker James Cameron has had a lifelong fascination with the deep oceans. He has led eight major deep-sea expeditions and completed numerous submersible dives, setting world-firsts including the 𝗳𝗶𝗿𝘀𝘁 solo dive to the Challenger Deep in the Mariana Trench, the 𝗳𝗶𝗿𝘀𝘁 exploration of the interior of the wreck of RMS 𝘛𝘪𝘵𝘢𝘯𝘪𝘤, and the 𝗳𝗶𝗿𝘀𝘁 seafloor-to-surface live broadcast. From prehistoric fossils to an Egyptian mummy, our curatorial team has prepped their fair share of unique artifacts for new exhibitions. With the upcoming 𝘑𝘢𝘮𝘦𝘴 𝘊𝘢𝘮𝘦𝘳𝘰𝘯 - 𝘊𝘏𝘈𝘓𝘓𝘌𝘕𝘎𝘐𝘕𝘎 𝘛𝘏𝘌 𝘋𝘌𝘌𝘗 exhibition, they’ve added to that list! These deep-sea specimens were recently prepped by our team for display. They are amphipods retrieved from the deepest known point in the Earth's oceans—the Challenger Deep of the Mariana Trench. How deep is that? Well, the distance from the ocean’s surface to the bottom of the Challenger Deep is greater than Mount Everest is high! YES, THAT DEEP!! In addition to these and other shrimp-like specimens from the Mariana Trench, the exhibit will also feature specimens from the New Britain Trench, located off the coast of Papua New Guinea. These specimens are on loan from the Scripps Institution of Oceanography. Book your ticket to view these fascinating creatures up close and in-person at The Durham Museum—exhibition opens Saturday! DurhamMuseum.org/cameron The Durham would like to thank UNMC College of Pharmacy and the Leon S McGoogan Health Sciences Library for their assistance in preparing for the specimens, with special thanks to Dr. Anthony Podany and Dr. Lee Wi******er.
