Like me, Tiffany Haddish will be celebrating her bat mitzvah in December, but that is where the similarities between our coming-of-age ceremonies end. Mine was on the eve of my 13th birthday, in the suburbs of New York City, and Tiffany's will be a red carpet event on her 40th birthday, the day her

Today marks the anniversary of the 1963 March on Washington for Jobs and Freedom. Many great speakers brought messages of hope and of course, dreams. These words are as significant then as they are today.
Dr. Prinz's address is remembered for its contention that in the face of discrimination, "the most urgent, the most disgraceful, the most shameful and the most tragic problem is silence."

The Jewish Historical Society of New Jersey is pleased to announce the public launch of its Jewish News digitization project which is now online on our website at jhs-nj.org.

This project provides full public online access to over 200,000 pages of the newspaper which spans 70 years. The new site is designed to provide quick and direct access to these resources for all audiences. Additional content will be made available on line as the digitization project proceeds toward completion.

The Jewish News began publishing on January 3, 1947. For nearly 70 years, until September 22, 2016, it was published in-house by the Greater MetroWest Federation and its predecessors. It was, and still remains, the newspaper of record for our Jewish community. Over the years, the paper has written of the many challenging religious, social and political issues our community has faced in a rapidly changing world. Until now, this incredible history of our community was not easily accessible. Funding for the digitization of the paper was made possible by the generous support of the Gottesman family, Friends of the Jewish News, and members of the JHS Board. Please take the opportunity to visit our website and view this incredible collection of our community’s history.

Spotlight on Collections - Ginsberg Family Papers

In 2015 the JHS of NJ received the papers of the Ginsberg Family from Pat Sebold. This collection spans decades of the family's correspondence and work.

The collection is unique as it is an insight into this tight-knit family. The members of the family were exemplary in their specialty - here we find educators, writers and activists. The most recognized member of this family is the poet, Allen Ginsberg. He is the first cousin of donor, Pat Sebold.

The JHS of NJ thanks the Pat Sebold for donating this very important collection to our archive.

Please call or visit us to learn more.

We are pleased to introduce and welcome another new and timely addition to the Spirit of the Jerseys State History Fair muster roll for 2019 - Save Ellis Island, Inc.! What better time for this organization to join the ranks of participants at the #NJHistoryFair as our country once again grapples with the heated issue of immigration. Along with the Statue of Liberty, Ellis Island has become a symbol of our immigration past. It stands as a reminder that we are a country built on the foundation of immigrant moxy and determination against all odds; on the dream and belief that a new and better life was possible here. It is that dream that continually fueled the growth of our country from the early colonial period through to the present day. Most among us have immigrant roots in our own family histories and it is high among the goals of Save Ellis Island Inc. to help us connect to those stories. While its primary mission is to rehabilitate the historic Island buildings and create compelling exhibitions it’s broader objectives are to “communicate, tell stories and begin dialogues about those who bravely came before us to help build the country we live in today; remind us where we came from, and tell us who we are;” and to create “a place of learning and intellectual exchange.” So make sure Saturday, September 14th is on your calendars and plan to spend a few hours at the #SpiritoftheJerseys State History Fair at #MonmouthBattlefieldStatePark in Manalapan. Look for the Save Ellis Island table, learn about what they do and get inspired to connect with your own family immigration stories - whatever they may be! #immigrantsgetthejobdone #immigrationhistory #SaveEllisIsland #EllisIsland #SpiritoftheJerseysStateHistoryFair #NJStateHistoryFair #NewJerseyHistoryFair #NewJerseyHistory #NJHistory #socialstudiesteachers #historyteacher #njteacher #njteachers #teacher #teachers
