Worcester's architectural past and present on display at craft center

Last night was the opening of "Worcester Architecture: Lost & Found." I provided the research for 18 groups of then and now images of Worcester landmarks. If you're in the area be sure to check it out at the Worcester Center for Crafts between now and November 21!

Town of Northborough, MA - Press Release: White Cliffs Market Study Released

Some positive news out of #Northborough, where a market analysis of the White Cliffs property found that it is still viable as an event space, and it could also be successfully converted into office space. The owners initially wanted to demolish the c. 1886 house, the summer estate of Daniel B. Wesson (of Smith & Wesson), but have been working with the town for the past several months to see if there is a way to save the property. The market analysis was paid for using Community Preservation Act funds, a great source of preservation funding. The property is still for sale, so if you know anyone interested in a great rehabilitation project, please spread the word! #savingplaces #forsale

Saving Sweet Briar College: One Coat of Paint At A Time

Thanks National Trust for Historic Preservation for the great article about the efforts to save Sweet Briar College, and the work of the alumnae to get campus back in shape!

Sweet Briar College comes back to life with help from alumnae and volunteers.

Kepes-Lynch Photograph Collection

Looking to waste a few hours? Check out these beautiful photos of #Boston in the 1950s that Kevin Lynch took as a study for his book "The Image of the City." The book discusses the way we interact with our surroundings and how we make mental maps of cities, using buildings and other objects as landmarks. It's sometimes a challenge to find your own mental landmarks in areas that have changed dramatically since the 1950s.

The objects in this collection relate to Kevin Lynch's study The Perceptual Form of the City, conducted in Boston, Massachusetts from 1954-1959. In 1954 MIT Professor Kevin Lynch began studying city form in a five year project funded by The Rockefeller Foundation. The study was done under the direct…

Hopkinton: Library project goes before Historic District Commission

The redesigned proposal for the Hopkinton Public Library expansion project is much more in keeping with the building's historic character, and more to scale relative to the neighboring buildings.

Hopkinton selectmen start Center School reuse planning

Hopefully preservation of the building will be a prime consideration when #Hopkinton decides what to do with Center School. The 1928 building is an excellent example of Colonial Revival style architecture, which was popular for public buildings at the time. And the 1950 addition at the rear, although it might not seem like much, was designed by the firm of Lucius Briggs, a prominent #Worcester architect who designed a number of buildings in that city. Center School also holds a special place in my heart because it's where I attended kindergarten, first, and second grade! #ThisPlaceMatters

2015 Most Endangered Sites Listings » Preservation Virginia

In the fight to #SaveSweetBriar, it's great to see the campus getting attention as well. Today it was listed on Preservation Virginia's 2015 Most Endangered list. The campus is listed as a district in the National Register of Historic Places, but unfortunately that designation is largely honorary and provides few protections for the buildings.

Hopkinton board hopes to keep toll house legacy alive

Efforts to save the Toll House in #Hopkinton will go before Town Meeting voters next week. It's unfortunate that this interesting and important piece of transportation history will likely be lost. The article references a report I did on the Toll House for the Hopkinton Historical Commission last year, which is available on the Historical Commission's website.

Hopkinton library plans save church ceiling, add basement

It's good to see that changes have been made to #Hopkinton's library addition. The new plan is more sensitive to the features on the two historic buildings that make up the library, and the new plan has a better interface with the surrounding neighborhood.

IS 'erasing history' in Nimrud, Iraq

While the loss of life is one of the worst parts of war, the wanton destruction of important cultural sites and artifacts - which often have no bearing on the conflict - is sometimes just as devastating.

Archaeologists and cultural officials express outrage about the reported bulldozing of the ancient Assyrian city of Nimrud in Iraq by Islamic State (IS) militants.

Sweet Briar College to close

The announced closure of Sweet Briar College has been personally devastating to me over the past day, as it is where I spent a wonderful four years for my undergrad. While the futures of the students and faculty are obviously the most important part, the campus is a beautiful place designed by Ralph Adams Cram. Although the campus is listed on the National Register of Historic Places, that designation provides few safeguards for the buildings. In addition, alumnae were told last night that there is nearly $30 million in deferred maintenance. I worry for the campus buildings if Sweet Briar were to close, as its rural location will make it difficult to redevelop. #saveSweetBriar

Sweet Briar College announced today it will close Aug. 25, blaming “insurmountable financial challenges” caused by the dwindling number of women interested in single-sex education and the pressures on small, liberal arts schools.

As a librarian at NEHGS, I love stumbling across items in our research library collection that bring the past to life in an unexpected way. I recently had one such happy “stumbling” experience when we discovered a work called Art Work of Boston in our stacks. Part of a larger series of “view books” of American cities published by the W. ‘Smart growth’ apartments popping up in Quincy and Brockton - The Boston Globe

Although developments like these are touted as using "new" smart growth zoning, this is how we've historically lived. It was only in the early 20th century, with the development of zoning and the rise of suburbs, that uses (commercial, residential, business) were separated from each other.

Two new “smart growth” apartment complexes are sprouting up in Brockton and Quincy, and local officials hope they will revitalize the downtowns of each city.

Southborough remains committed to Burnett House

It is unfortunate to see that this deal fell through, but hopefully the town and owner can work something out. This is an instance where a demolition delay bylaw would have been useful to provide some time and a bit of breathing room to find a way to save the property, without the imminent threat of demolition.

SOUTHBOROUGH — While a deal to save the historic Joseph Burnett House on Main Street fell apart this week, many in town are interested in
