Today we honor Juneteeth and the long road to freedom it represents.

The story of the Whydah Gally is inseparable from the history of the transatlantic slave trade. Before she carried pirate treasure, she carried human cargo. Among the crew who sailed under Black Sam Bellamy were men who had once been enslaved themselves.

History is rarely simple. On Juneteenth, we remember both the suffering endured and the resilience that carried people forward.

Happy Flag Day 🏴‍☠️

On June 14, 1777, the Continental Congress adopted the Stars and Stripes. Seventy years earlier, a very different flag was flying off the coast of Cape Cod.

Captain "Black Sam" Bellamy sailed the Whydah under a large black flag bearing a skull and crossbones. Surviving crew member Thomas Davis described it firsthand: "they spread a large black Flag, with a Death's Head and Bones a-cross."

Flags have always been symbolic statements flown for the world to see. Come learn more about Black Sam Bellamy and his flag at the Whydah Pirate Museum, open seven days a week, 10am to 4pm.

On April 26, 1717, the Whydah sank off the coast of Cape Cod. On April 26, 2026, the man who led the team that discovered her will be here to share the story.

Join Barry Clifford and other members of Expedition Whydah for a special talk marking the 309th anniversary of the wreck. He will discuss what he has learned about that fateful night in 1717 and how it shaped the expedition that changed history.

This event is included with museum admission. Barry will remain afterward to sign books and take photographs. Copies of his book will be available in the gift shop, or you may bring your own.

Whispers of the Wreck 🏴‍☠️
Join us this Saturday, April 25th for Whispers of the Wreck, a storytelling experience of folklore, sea legends, and myths surrounding the wreck of the Whydah Gally. This Saturday marks the eve of the 309th anniversary of the Whydah's sinking, and there is no better night to tell these stories. They live in the shadows of the museum, told only at night, when the lights go down and the galleries fall silent.
