It took THREE YEARS and rejection after rejection, but our Preservation Team -- James Tabery, Kirk Huffaker, and Paul Reeve with our Exec Director Robert -- stayed on course to achieve the goal to get this marker. NOT to our glory. To teach Utahans our true history. Our motto is "Unity through historical truth". How can we be united unless and until we discuss not the falsehoods of history but the truths of history?

Join us for the official Utah Buffalo Soldier Heritage Trail sign unveiling and walking tour on Saturday, August 29, 2026, from 9:00 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. at The Utah Military Museum (formerly the Fort Douglas Military Museum), located at 32 Potter Street, SLC, UT 84113; on the campus of the University of Utah).

Done in partnership between the Sema Hadithi African American Heritage and Culture Foundation and the Utah State Historic Preservation Office, this event honors the legacy and history of the Buffalo Soldiers at Fort Douglas.

It's time to install the wayside for Utah's newest trail the Buffalo Soldiers Heritage Trail at historic Fort Douglas.

WHAT is a "wayside"? It is a sign with explanation about the historic significance of a spot or area. In this case relative to Utah's Black history, Fort Douglas is one of the sites where Buffalo Soldiers were stationed as well as where they worked. The 24th Infantry of the United States Colored Troops (aka the Buffalo Soldiers) were stationed there, arriving in October 1896, 130 years ago this year.
