From The Collection: Painted Desert - Arizona by Albert Lorey Groll

Under a brilliant sky of deep blue shading to turquoise toward the horizon and intensified by masses of violet-tinted clouds, is a vast expanse of desert country disclosing in the distance a bluish ribbon of rocky mounds, their peaks highlighted by the fleeting reflections of the hidden sun.

Groll, who was born in New York City, first traveled to Arizona in 1904 with ethnologist Stewart Culin. Soon his western paintings became popular and won him a medal at the 1906 annual exhibition at the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts.

Albert Lorey Groll (American, 1856-1952), Painted Desert - Arizona, oil on canvas, Museum Purchase, 1928.20.1

Our Founder, Dr. Levi Mengel, always believed that “Giving a child a chance to see and handle the things about which they study is not only the greatest timesaver, but the most effective way of giving an absolutely correct impression.” As such, RPM’s Education Department is looking for support to sustain our educational offerings here at The Museum. Whether you are buying an item off of our wish list or making a monetary donation, your support will always be appreciated.
More information can be found on our website at the following link: https://www.readingpublicmuseum.org/event/rpm-education-department-donations/

Meet Geoffrey K. Fleming, our Executive Director and CEO, now in his third year leading The Museum!

Geoffrey oversees the day-to-day operations of The Museum. No two days are the same, and can range from full schedules of meetings to working closely with staff to solve challenges and keep everything running smoothly.

One of his favorite works is The Balloon by Julien Dupre, a work that continues to capture the attention and imagination of visitors. He also finds great joy in seeing guests, especially children, experience excitement and curiosity during their time at The Museum.

When asked to describe The Museum in three words, Geoffrey shared:
“Educational, stimulating, and enriching.”

Outside of work, Geoffrey enjoys exploring flea markets and tag sales, and is always on the lookout for unique treasures with stories to tell!

We’re grateful for Geoffrey’s leadership and vision as he helps guide The Museum forward.
