One Everglades adventure includes an airboat ride and an opportunity to get close to alligators, Florida Panthers and other Everglades wildlife. We have planned a special Everglades Eco Tour taking lucky participants on a walking tour into the Everglades to view wildlife and many species of Liguus (pending permit). Participants will receive an educational information booklet including a wildlife ID guide. The Eco Tour is NOT a collecting trip. Full details for each field trip will be posted on our new website by mid-January. We will update and confirm information on a continuing basis right up until COA next July. If you are planning on signing up for one of our shelling trips, please remember that the State of Florida requires you to have a Florida Fishing License to collect shells. Members over the age of 65 are not required to purchase a Florida Fishing License. You may purchase your Florida Fishing License at www.myfwc.com. The Bourse will open on Friday, July 17 from 1-8pm and on Saturday, July 18th 9am-3pm in the Global Ballroom. There are many activities you can explore on your own in South Florida including various concert arenas, shopping and dining malls close by and two Seminole Indian Casinos. The beautiful Fort Lauderdale beach is a 30-minute drive away. One destination, Sawgrass Mills, is located five miles from the Bonaventure Resort. Sawgrass Mills is the largest outlet and value-retail shopping destination in the United States with more than 350 stores. Please check our website for links to many of the interesting destinations in the South Florida area.

Peanut Island is a manmade Island in the Lake Worth Lagoon. Until the late 1800’s Lake Worth was a freshwater lake, enclosed by a coral barrier created by the rising and falling of the ocean. The Lake filled up through seepage from Lake Okeechobee.

When the East coast of Florida was rapidly becoming populated, the need for a Port was great, so in 1905 the Florida Legislature approved the building of a port and work was begun to cut through to the Lake. The fill was deposited in one area to form what is now Peanut Island.
The Island then became home in 1936 to the U.S. Coast Guard and later in 1961 to the John F. Kennedy Cold War bunker. Tours are available.

In the short span of about one hundred years Peanut Island has become home to over 700 species of mollusks. Over 350 species of fish, and a large variety of birds can be found here. We have a mixture of species from both the Northern Georgian subprovince, and some from the Caribbean Province and here you will find species living in the same proximity found nowhere else. For a list of species found here, go to the Jacksonville Web pages, www.jaxshells.org, scroll down to Checklists and click on Peanut Island.
