#OnThisDate 1775, “Listen, my children, and you will hear, Of the midnight ride of Paul Revere,” -Henry Wadsworth Longfellow
Paul Revere and Longfellow’s poem capture the myths of history. Museums, like ours, work to break through those myths to try and tell real, true stories. Like of this saddle, on display at the 1883 Dillon Schoolhouse Museum, used by a rancher in the county 100 years after Paul Revere’s Ride. #SummitPast

It is awesome to have our sites recognized for preservation and their significance in our history. We have a long way to go yet. Our area has so many important sites that we stand to loose if we don't apply for funding to preserve them and educate folks about them.

On July 15th at 2pm Toronto-based storyteller Falen Johnson will be at the Iroquois Indian Museum to share her compelling narratives. Sometimes comedic, sometimes difficult, her stories take stock of what it truly means to be Indigenous in both historical and today’s context.

An actor, playwright, and crafter of contemporary tales for adults, Falen is Mohawk & Tuscarora originally from Six Nations. In contrast to traditional Haudenosaunee stories, Falen’s thought-provoking expressions are woven from her experiences living in Six Nations and Toronto. Her work explores subjects ranging from dating outside color lines, land disposition, blood quantum, to stereotypes. A graduate of George Brown Theatre School, her credits include: Salt Baby, The Only Good Indian with Turtle Gals Performance Ensemble, The Triple Truth, Savage, Strong Medicine, Death of a Chief, A Very Polite Genocide, and Tombs of the Vanishing Indian. Falen has also been featured on The Moth Radio Hour.

So many African Americans braved changing this nation. Then there are the ones we don't know about but we see the results of: buildings, like the Capitol, railways/railroads, skyscrapers, roads, books under other names, small businesses, science, art, everything. Look beyond these famous African Americans and you will find awesome, inspiring folks.

150 years ago today: W.E.B. Du Bois is born. During his lifetime, Du Bois was both a critical civil rights leader and one of the nation's pre-eminent intellectual voices.

In 1905, Du Bois was one of the founders of the Niagra Movement, a civil rights organization that rejected the accommodationist policies of the time in favor of outspoken, organized resistance against racial discrimination and injustice in the United States. Four years later, he co-founded the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP).

A prolific scholar and writer, Du Bois used works like "The Souls of Black Folk" and "Black Reconstruction" to give voice to African American perspectives and illuminate overlooked chapters in American history.

In 1943, Du Bois posed for this portrait at the Scurlock Studio in Washington, D.C. [📷: Archives Center]

From the Annual Town of Fulton Newsletter: "Any tapping of Maple trees on Town owned property must seek Town Board approval before tapping can begin. All requests should be in writing and sent to the Town Clerk, 1168 Bear Ladder Rd, West Fulton, NY 12194." This site administrator can empathize with maple tappers that this might be a hassle. West Fulton Town Park has been tapped for I don't know for how long. Yeah great historian I am, I'm not a historian. It would be great information to know. So please comment if you have the answer. The tappers of the park's trees began to use the metal buckets to keep with our exhibit's time period. It looked great. Since this ordinance came out, it stopped. I'm sad about that. Tappers please submit your requests. You know the Town properties. You tap them every year. Make a template of your request form and send it in in January. Don't be deterred. I don't think you will be turned down. If you are tapping in a historic area Town Park, for example Breakabeen, it might be a good idea to use the metal buckets. Yes Breakabeen, the whole village, is registered on the National Parks and Historical Places Registry. Happy Maple Syrup making!

What once was old is new again at the Old Stone Fort! These circa 1930s chandeliers once hung in the stately and historic Schoharie County Courthouse. This week, the Schoharie County Department of Public Works, with help from museum staff and volunteers were able to give the chandeliers a new life on the second floor of the Old Stone Fort Museum! The chandelier installation is "phase 1" of a comprehensive lighting project which will see the replacement of florescent lighting in the 246 year old fort with energy efficient LED lights that also emit no harmful ultraviolet radiation.

Get creative this summer at the Iroquois Indian Museum! Starting on July 26th, Jay Havens will be at the Iroquois Indian Museum producing a 10' x 40' mural in the Children’s Museum. Jay will invite visitors from 8 years of age to elders to take part in the painting of this unique permanent installation. Related activities will be available for younger visitors. Jay will debut his collaboratively created mural during our annual Iroquois Indian Festival on September 2 & 3.

During his residency at the Museum, Jay will discuss the development of the project, the significance of the mural, and the contemporary stories and concepts it portrays. On Fridays at 1pm Jay will also present artist talks focused on his creative process, his other works addressing consumerism and environmental degradation, and the plasticity between conventional and contemporary Native arts.
