Year of the Coast Guard

Year of the Coast Guard The Year of the Coast Guard will be held from April 2014 through March 2015. "Always Ready for the Call!"

10/01/2015

Received from the National President, CPOA, YNC Kim Lorigan, USCG Ret:

HELP CELEBRATE CWO FRED MANN'S 97TH BIRTHDAY!

The CPOA recently established the Coast Guard Chief Petty Officers (CGCPO) Foundation to benefit members of our Coast Guard Family. Our ability to start the Foundation was entirely due to one man: CWO Fred Mann. A long-time member of our Association, CWO Mann donated an annuity to fund the Foundation’s first charity, the Fred Mann Family Lucky Bag Fund, as a way to give back to the Coast Guard and the CPOA.

CWO Mann will celebrate his 97th birthday on 14 October, and the CGCPO Foundation President, MCPO Forrest Croom, and I plan to travel to Weslaco, Texas to present him with an award and help him celebrate. It would mean so much to him to know that members of his Coast Guard Family are thinking of him and wishing him well on his special day. To that end, please consider sending him a birthday card to the following address (please keep in mind that it must arrive by NLT 12 October):

CWO Fred Mann
c/o MCPO Forrest Croom
2214 Whiteback Drive
Houston, TX 77084-4896

And just a little bit of background ~ you can find CWO Mann’s oral history on the Coast Guard webpage at

He served at Guadalcanal during the same period as SM1 Douglas Munro and is listed in the Military Times’ Hall of Valor, having been awarded the Silver Star:
Per General Orders: Bureau of Naval Personnel Information Bulletin No. 320 (November 1943)
The Silver Star, awarded to (then) BM1 Frederick Mann, USCG, for actions while stationed onboard the U.S.S. George F. Elliott (AP-13) during the Battle at Guadalcanal, World War II

CITATION: The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Boatswain's Mate First Class Frederick D. Mann, United States Coast Guard, for conspicuous gallantry while attached to the U.S.S. GEORGE F. ELLIOTT (AP-13) in action against Japanese forces off Guadalcanal on 8 August 1942. When a hostile plane was shot down and exploded on board the ship, transforming the ship into a blazing torch, Boatswain's Mate First Class Mann carried a fire hose into the troop ammunition magazine to flood the compartment. Subsequently, despite suffocating smoke and dangerously heated bulkheads, he reentered the compartment, recovered the hose and continued his efforts. His action prevented the magazine from exploding.

CWO Mann is one of our Coast Guard heroes ~
please send a card to help celebrate his birthday.

Thanks so much!

Yours in Service ~

Kim Lorigan
CPOA Nat’l President

Bookkeeper Position - The US Navy Memorial Foundation has an opening for a detail-oriented individual who desires a challenging position in a fast-paced non-profit organization. Because our accounting department is small, the bookkeeper will be exposed to and gain hands-on experience in all aspects of non-profit accounting. This is an excellent opportunity for someone who is willing to work hard and learn under the direct supervision of two highly respected non-profit accountants.
