We honor member Ambassador Ruth A. Davis, an amazing diplomat who reached the rank of Career Ambassador in the U.S. Foreign Service and whose many firsts paved the way for those who followed.

Ambassador Davis passed away this weekend. We extend our condolences to her family, friends and colleagues.

April 16th is DC Emancipation Day. April 16, 1862 marks the abolition of slavery in the District of Columbia. Over 3,000 enslaved persons were freed eight months before the Emancipation Proclamation liberated slaves in the South. The District also has the distinction of being the only part of the United States to have compensated slave owners for freeing enslaved persons they held.

The historic DACOR Bacon House, on the corner of 18th and F Sts NW - two blocks from the White House, was built in 1825, and enslaved people both constructed the building and worked in it until 1862. As we celebrate the House's bicentennial this year, our historian Terry Walz has been working hard to uncover the stories of these enslaved people.
