I will be teaching at the John C. Campbell Folk School in Brasstown, NC this weekend. Our topic is Improvisational Quiltmaking from repurposed garments, as inspired by the amazing quilts of Gee's Bend. This intuitive approach to design and creation is very freeing for those of us who have agonized over perfect intersections.

This sample is made from my own life fabrics - shortened shirts, a corduroy shirt that shrank in the closet, pieces of clothing belonging to Daddy and Mom. It felt different to cut up clothes I've worn. I have made more than 100 t-shirt quilts from other people's garments, which is very special. Cutting and designing with my own things, to please only myself, was touching on a new way.

I will be hand quilting this during the weekend and will post again when it is finished.

Lunch and learn program on Thursday, April 18, 2019 from 12-1. Event invitation to come soon. Save the date.

Exciting news: Lauren Kingsland just put up an exhibit of her quilts in the Georgetown University School of Medicine. The exhibit is called: The Healing Journey Project & Kolam Quilt Series.

The Healing Journey Project is a collection of quilts inspired by stories of Georgetown Lombardi Comprehensive Cancer Center patients, caregivers, and medical staff and their experiences with cancer. Each person’s journey is unique. Universal themes play out over and over - facing fear and difficulty with resilience, striving for balance, being transformed through powerful emotions, caring for oneself, caring for one another, holding intention and embracing flow.

The Kolam Quilt Series was inspired by Lauren’s visit to Tamil Nadu, Southern India in 2008. Drawing kolam becomes a mindfulness practice by letting each dot stand for a concern and using the line as a way of acknowledging those issues. In this way you model how you will move through the challenges of the day in a beautiful way and end up at last where you began, whole and complete. For Lauren, Kolam represents the universal human impulse to create beauty and order.

Have you always wanted to learn how to quilt?
Not only is quilting fun and a time to enjoy socializing with others, but studies have found that pursuing creative passions can help improve your brain. In this class, you will create a small 14”x19” quilt complete with borders and binding. You will learn how to select, mark, and cut fabric; make a template, press, and arrange fabric blocks into a quilt top. You will cut and attach borders with a basic running stitch; and complete your project by basting, quilting, and binding. This project is done entirely by hand; sewing machines are not required nor accommodated. Supply list is available on the LLI website.

This early work of mine is back in the conversation about the importance of the Unexpected Result. This Around the Twist was being pieced during a snowstorm. When I ran out of the floral print I was forced to shop in the stash rather than go out for more fabric. The turquoise played best with the existing fabrics and this quilt is still interesting because of it. Life is like that - adaptation to unforeseen situations is the growth edge.

A friend who speaks frequently to scientific audiences about regenerative medicine initiatives asked for a slide of this quilt to illustrate his talks. He sees something about the nature of scientific inquiry and lattices in this piece. How fascinating.

It is Art when there is a conversation between the artwork and the viewer.

Fiber College of Maine, first week after Labor Day, is a chance to make things in a setting by the ocean in the pines. This was my first year to teach, hopefully with many more to come.

Astrig Tanguay holds an amazing vision that creates a space for this magic. Searsport, ME.

For 2 days I taught "Design Your Day -Sewing a Kolam as a Path to Mindfulness." Then did a drop-in a la carte class of the reflection spiral project. See happy, peaceful students showing off their creations.

May there be many more chances to teach these things, in Maine and everywhere.

What a great to be part of the exploration of textile treasures at Montgomery History. My contribution to the day was an explanation of the mathematics behind the Mariners Compass blocks in the 1853 Woodbourne quilt. That quilt was made in Goshen, MD, my old neighborhood.

Sharing a few images from yesterday's A Day with a Curator: Textile Treasure program. Enthusiasts of storied quilts, Americana and rare textiles had the opportunity to take a close-up look at some of the most important quilts, coverlets, and paisley shawls in the Montgomery History collection with curator and textile historian Elizabeth Lay. Photos by Smithsonian Associates volunteer Carol Farris. Thanks to all for a great day!

My personal mission since 1985 has been to bring quiltmaking to the world as an art medium with as much power as paint, or any of the other of the fine art media. Today, 30 years later, an Art Quilt show is remarkable for the work in it. The question "Is this Art because of the medium? " is moot. Success!!!

I am pleased to have a number of new pieces in this show along with the work of 7 other art quilters. Please join us for the reception to celebrate.

The artists’ reception for “Contemporary Quilters: A Modern View of Life” will be held on Tuesday, March 8, from 7:00 to 8:30 pm. The exhibit will be on view from Mar. 4-Apr. 25 at

Registration is open for "Laundry to Legacy", a 3 week course about using garments of sentimental value to make a special quilt. We will look at the special challenges of using T-shirts and neckties, as well as design considerations and construction strategies. We honor the stories of the fabric of our lives with this project and it deserves our best work.

I am very excited to announce this partnership with the Smithsonian Associates Studio Arts program to offer this class to a wider audience.

When our beloved choir director/organist, Paul Kelley, left the Episcopal Church of the Ascension this summer we wrote messages to him on strips of fabric. These were incorporated into a log cabin quilt which I finished in time for him to get it by Christmas. It's the next best thing to a hug from all of us.
