Big thanks to Hasselblad & broncolor USA for hosting our two-day bi-annual 'Quality Digitization Training Series' workshop virtually this year!

Smithsonian photographers from across the institution got to see the latest advancements in high resolution medium format cameras from Hasselblad and lighting manufacturer broncolor. Color calibration methods, software training and tethered shooting practices helped round out the curriculum.

DPO Project Wins Prize in Biodiversity Informatics Challenge

Today the Global Biodiversity Information Facility (GBIF) announced that a project by the Digitization Program Office (DPO) won a Third Place prize in their 2020 challenge. GBIF selected the Mass Georeferencing Tool project among several entries in their 2020 Ebbe Nielsen Challenge, a competition for projects that "leverage biodiversity data and tools from the GBIF network to advance open science."

World War Two: The Flying Frontier - Google Arts & Culture

Today, on the 75th anniversary of the end of World War II, we are thrilled to announce the launch of our collaborative project with the National Museum of American History and Google Arts & Culture!

Together, we digitized and have made available over 15,000 posters from the Archives Center and the Political and Military History divisions, ranging from World War I to today: https://artsandculture.google.com/project/world-war-ii-posters

The digitization of these diverse posters, across multiple collections, allows for a fuller, richer understanding of their place in history, as well as the ability to do deeper dives on data to better connect them to one another, and other collections available online, such as the Google Arts & Culture project, "World War Two: the Flying Frontier," featuring four Smithsonian museums exploring the role of aviation in World War II: https://artsandculture.google.com/project/smithsonian-world-war-ii

Google Arts & Culture features content from over 2000 leading museums and archives who have partnered with the Google Cultural Institute to bring the world's treasures online.
