Latino Museum backers are pushing for a prime spot on the National Mall. But a turf war is looming.

“Where this museum goes is critical to our entire campaign. We’ve been at this for 16 years and the National Mall is where the 25 million people are,” said Estuardo Rodriguez, Friends president and chief executive.

The Friends of the National Museum of the American Latino helped persuade Congress to create the new museum and is now pressing to have it built on the increasingly crowded Mall.

Our Story

The National Mall Coalition was founded in 2000 by a group of architects, historians, preservationists, educators, and concerned citizens seeking to provide, in the face of fragmented government management, a voice for the public interest in Mall matters.

Chair Judy Scott Feldman's presentation to Smithsonian Associates 11 March 2020, via C-SPAN3, was an excellent reflection on how public (and adjacent private) space in the Capital has been used historically and could be improved in future. Maybe there's a place for a representation of the attached work. Maybe I dozed past it, but to me, Mya Lin's 'Wall' is the Mall's most moving work.
A timely piece....
I remember during the Govt shutdown.... How Obama paid extraordinary expenses to Wall off this open area in the Mall and hired security guards to keep anyone from entering the Monument...... Totally disgusting...
Owned by the public, controlled by the public, managed by our employees, the government.
