Rising waters trigger change for DC's Tidal Basin

"Given predictions that climate change will push high tides even higher in coming years — placing the Jefferson Memorial under as much as 4 feet of water at times by 2040 — repairs won’t go far enough to save the historic landscape."

A visit to the Tidal Basin in the District of Columbia should deliver sweeping views of cherry trees heavy with pink and white blooms this time of year, drawing millions

"The recent fortification of the Capitol and the Mall reveals a troubling story of barriers in a place that symbolizes freedom."

Two of the most enduring images of Biden’s Inauguration were of the Capitol Building in the shadow of an unprecedented level of security and a National Mall without a cheering crowd.

"The move is significant because the Mall has been the traditional site where much of the general public has gathered to view the inauguration at the Capitol in person and on large jumbotrons."

Afterlife for the World War II Memorial?

"The Memorial’s geological and geographic context makes it predictable that in the not-too-distant future it will simply become too expensive for NPS to maintain – if it doesn’t obviate its own maintenance problems by collapsing into the buried swamp."

Whatever else you can say about the World War II (WWII) Memorial on the National Mall, it’s surely obvious that its siting, on the filled-in marshland of the Potomac River, was questionable at best.

New Memorial Recognizes Generations Of Military Service By Native American Veterans

The latest memorial on the National Mall, a tribute to Native American veterans such as the "code walkers" of World War II, helps tell the American story more fully. And we know there will be more memorials to come. We need a vision for telling these stories and a plan for realizing it. We've proposed one vision for the 3rd Century Mall. (https://www.nationalmallcoalition.org/innovation/3rd-century-mall/)

The newest monument on the National Mall, which opens on Veterans Day, will provide a quiet shrine for Native vets to visit. Native Americans have traditionally served in high numbers.

Chair Judy Scott Feldman's presentation to Smithsonian Associates 11 March 2020, via C-SPAN3, was an excellent reflection on how public (and adjacent private) space in the Capital has been used historically and could be improved in future. Maybe there's a place for a representation of the attached work. Maybe I dozed past it, but to me, Mya Lin's 'Wall' is the Mall's most moving work.
A timely piece....
I remember during the Govt shutdown.... How Obama paid extraordinary expenses to Wall off this open area in the Mall and hired security guards to keep anyone from entering the Monument...... Totally disgusting...
