🌟 Whether you missed this year’s Smithsonian Folklife Festival or want to relive it, take a peek at what “Youth and the Future of Culture” was all about, including the Olivia Cadaval Story Circle, in memory of the Smithsonian curator y gran amiga del Latino Museum.

From lowrider culture and mariachi concerts to music apprenticeship and emerging media makers, it was energizing to see how young people influence and engage with culture, as well as how they create, innovate, and sustain cultural practices and traditions.

The National Museum of the American Latino is proud to have helped support segments of the festival featuring Young Ambassadors Program alumni. The festival received federal support from the Latino Initiatives Pool, administered by the National Museum of the American Latino.

🎼 In 1931, Congress established “The Star-Spangled Banner” as the national anthem of the United States. But did you know that there’s an official Spanish translation? In 1945, the U.S. State Department commissioned a Spanish translation as part of the Good Neighbor Policy that originated during the Roosevelt administration. The winning entry, “El Pendón Estrellado,” was written by Peruvian American composer and lyricist Clotilde Arias. To this date, Arias’ version is considered the only singable Spanish translation of the national anthem.

So, who was Clotilde Arias? Arias moved from Peru to New York City in 1923 to study music when she was 22 years old. She arrived during an era of cultural renaissance throughout the city and the nation. Arias was a talented composer and translator, and by the late 1940s, she entered the growing ad industry. Over time, she became head of Spanish-language advertising at a New York agency.

🎼 En 1931, el Congreso estableció “The Star-Spangled Banner” como himno nacional de Estados Unidos. ¿Pero sabías que existe una traducción oficial al español? En 1945, el Departamento de Estado de Estados Unidos encargó una traducción al español como parte de la política del Buen Vecino, originada durante la administración Roosevelt. La obra ganadora, “El Pendón Estrellado”, fue escrita por la compositora y letrista peruano-estadounidense Clotilde Arias. Hasta la fecha, la versión de Arias se considera la única traducción al español cantable del himno nacional.

Entonces, ¿quién fue Clotilde Arias? Arias se mudó de Perú a la ciudad de Nueva York en 1923 para estudiar música cuando tenía 22 años. Llegó durante una época de renacimiento cultural en la ciudad y el país. Arias era una talentosa compositora y traductora, y a finales de la década de 1940, se incorporó a la creciente industria publicitaria. Con el tiempo, se convirtió en jefe de publicidad en español en una agencia de Nueva York.

This week, we welcomed 20 college-bound high school seniors to our annual Young Ambassadors Program (YAP) Washington Week! 🔥 During their time here, participants will engage in learning sessions at the Smithsonian, such as conversations with professionals in the field and overall, will obtain leadership and professional development experience.

Keep up with these students from across the United States and Puerto Rico throughout the summer to learn more about our nationally recognized program!

Puerto Rican baseball phenomenon Roberto Clemente, Cuban Queen of Salsa Celia Cruz, and Mexican American astronaut and researcher Ellen Ochoa are just a few of the Latina and Latino leaders represented in Verónica Castillo’s Tree of Life sculpture. Trees of Life are found in many religions and cultures, as well as in some mythologies. This particular style of sculpting is a traditional art form from Puebla, Mexico. Castillo’s award-winning artwork explores the ways in which Latinas and Latinos have been part of creating and shaping the United States.

The National Museum of the American Latino commissioned the sculpture to reflect the people, stories, and objects featured in its exhibition, “¡Presente! A Latino History of the United States.” The exhibition, which received the Smithsonian's top exhibit prize in 2023, highlights the long and multifaceted history of Latinas and Latinos in the United States. You can discover what makes Latino history an integral part of U.S. history during guided tours on Saturday, June 28, and Saturday, July 19.

El fenómeno puertorriqueño del béisbol Roberto Clemente, la cubana, reina de la salsa, Celia Cruz, y la astronauta e investigadora mexicana-estadounidense Ellen Ochoa son solo algunos de los líderes latinos representados en la escultura del “Árbol de la vida” de Verónica Castillo. Los árboles de la vida se encuentran en muchas religiones y culturas, así como en algunas mitologías. Este estilo particular de escultura es una forma de arte tradicional de Puebla, México. La galardonada obra de Castillo explora cómo latinas y latinos han contribuido a la creación y el desarrollo de Estados Unidos.

El Museo Nacional del Latino Estadounidense encargó la escultura para reflejar las personas, historias y objetos que se presentan en su exposición “¡Presente! A Latino History of the United States”. Esta muestra, que recibió el premio a la exposición más importante de la Smithsonian en 2023, destaca la larga y multifacética historia de latinas y latinos en Estados Unidos.
