Friends of the Warrenton Caboose

Friends of the Warrenton Caboose Welcome to Warrenton's historic Norfolk & Western railroad caboose #518554.

Although the “little red caboose” is now a thing of the past, we can still enjoy its entire splendor on the Warrenton Branch Greenway. Resting proud at the 4th Street trailhead, the vintage 1969 Norfolk & Western steel cupola caboose has been fully restored to its original operating condition and serves as a showcase of Warrenton’s railroad heritage and railroad history in general. Over 3,000 volunteer hours have been invested in the caboose restoration project.

Mission: Preserve Warrenton's railroad heritage through the display of historical items, public interaction. Provide a high level of maintenance and care for Warrenton's historic Norfolk & Western railroad caboose #518554.

Happy Independence Day to all! The caboose will be open this Saturday, July 6, from 9:00am to 11:00am.

Today the large numbers and logo were finished for both sides of the caboose. Jeff is applying the second coat on the trail side. He is doing this by hand, and is matching the original locations exactly.

Small stencils were started today using spray paint. The wind gusts made the task a little more of a challenge than I would have liked, but the results are looking good once the stray paint was removed.

We’re happy that the next two days have a favorable weather forecast with no rain expected.

The sanding of rough spots and peeling paint continued Monday and was finished Tuesday, followed with a second power washing. The lack of a water supply at the caboose was solved with a water trailer and self contained pump supplied by Fauquier County Parks and Recreation.

Today was the tedious job of masking windows and parts that will not be painted red was completed.

Sunday update. Our painter was off today, which provided time with good weather to tackle removing the old paint from the couplers. A full day of power grinding, but finally down to bare steel. It’s strange to see shiny couplers, but rain and humidity will do their part and give them a nice - and correct - coat of rust.

Friday was a quiet day because of the rain. Today the trail side of the caboose body was gently sanded to establish a smooth surface for the new red paint.

The photo of the coupler shows how the black paint from the original renovation is being removed. The couplers will NOT be repainted once they are cleaned off, because it is more accurate to have just the bare cast steel. Railroads don’t paint couplers because the paint might hide a defect in the metal. We will do the same for historical accuracy.

The other photo was taken today that shows an interesting detail that was revealed. If you look very closely at the horizontal weld line you will see a smal dark spot. It’s very difficult to see in this photo, but that is a small trace of the color “Pevlar Blue” which was the original color of the caboose when it was built for the Norfolk and Western Railway in 1969!

Today the undercarriage of the caboose was painted black. The many nooks and crannies required Jeff to spend the time crawling about in order to reach everything. Tomorrow’s rain will probably prevent any significant process, but we’re looking forward to good weather on Saturday.

Exciting times at the Warrenton Caboose!

After many delays and lack of funds, the caboose is going to receive a much needed paint job. Jeff Conner, who travels the country painting rail cars for museums, started today power washing from the top down.

If the wind dies down, and the rain holds off, he will continue to work this week and through the weekend. Jeff says the steel surface is in good condition, so the next step is sanding where the paint has peeled.

The bright red rectangle to the right of the NW is where the KarTrack automatic car identification plate was removed for restoration. You can clearly see how much fading has occurred the past 20+ years. The caboose will soon be bright red again like it was when it was first restored.

More photos will be posted throughout the project.

GOOD NEWS! Approximately ten weeks ago the old "Yard Limit" sign disappeared from the Warrenton Branch Greenway. What was initially thought of as a theft, turned out to be an accident. The sign was broken off the post during routine maintenance nearby, and the crew recovered the sign for safekeeping until a restoration plan could be developed. The sign has been carefully welded and returned to the post for display.

You can find this sign just beyond the locomotive turntable pit as you walk from the caboose. We're happy to see it back and looking so good!

06/27/2017

THIS SATURDAY, July 1, we will have the caboose open for visitors from 9:00am to 11:00am. WATCH THE WEATHER! If it's raining, we will not be open. Happy Independance Day Weekend!

On or around Thursday April 20th, 2017 one of the historical cast iron railroad signs along the Greenway was stolen. The YARD LIMIT sign was located near the turntable basin and measures approx. 30-in wide and 24-in high. It was snapped off the steel pole to which it was mounted. The sign is rare (because of the shape and size) and probably dates back to the 1930s or earlier. If anyone has information about the sign's disappearance/whereabouts or notices a like sign for sale on eBay or Craigslist, please notify the Warrenton Police Department at 540-347-1107.

The Friends of the Warrenton Caboose were very excited to unveil the new caboose interpretive sign this morning! Created by local artist Andrew Ruddle, the new display allows visitors to get a glimpse inside the caboose and points out many of the details of #518554. Our thanks and appreciation to Andrew for a fantastic job depicting the caboose in his unique style. The sign is a great addition to the displays already at the trail-head and a terrific accompaniment to the existing interpretive display at the turntable basin, also created by Mr. Ruddle. Please come down to the caboose and check out the new display!
