Crawford Hicks will be signing his new book on Dec. 7th at 10am at Majestic Frames on Moody Rd. (Next to My Father's Pizza) Here's a little blip about the book.

Crawford Hicks boyhood dream of flying did not include being shot down. The routine flak-attacks during every bomb run always caused stress, but not as much as the two Messerschmitt attacks on his last mission. Jumping out of his plane into the hands of the Germans lead to a challenging experience as a Prisoner of War, a keen strange sense of thanks and a lifelong belief in "counting his blessings." As POW he gained an appreciation of what was important. He learned to endure, to stay sane, and to survive. Written in Crawford Hicks own words, readers will get an inside look at his path from learning to fly, hitting a “shack”, leading his crew on dangerous bombing missions, being captured, and returning home for a post-war life. See actual military reports of his last mission, eye witness reports, and lost and surviving crew members. See photo of Lil' Ginny, Crawford Hicks’ B-17 crashed in Germany in 1944. See actual military reports of his last mission, eye witness reports, and lost and surviving crew members.

At 98 years old, LTC Crawford Hicks is one a few remaining heroes of the Greatest Generation.
Come meet him!

So, in this month's issue of WORLD WAR II there is an article titled Where Nazi's Once Roamed. And it was about a camp in Texas that held Nazi's that were captured in North Africa. I was flabbergasted that they were being held in the US. I knew we had camps holding American Japanese but not Nazi's. So I googled where all the camps were located in the US. And right in the middle of Georgia they showed 2! Which turns out to be Camp Oglethorpe (which I just bought a book about this camp that was located in Macon and kept Civil War prisoners that was a well kept secret) and now I find out that camp Wheeler was a location in Macon that kept WWII POW Nazis's. WOW! But what really blew the lid off the butter was last night having dinner with my high school bestie and she said," Didn't I tell you about my aunt having Germans working on their farm in Dublin?" "NO!", was my reply. So when I researched and Dublin wasn't on the map I read more and Dublin was a branch camp of Camp Wheeler. The branch camps which also included Monticello, Ashburn, Waynesboro, Daniels field and at one time all combined they housed 4,700 people. Google Camp Wheeler Macon Ga WWII Prisoner of War camp. I learned something this week.

This is one of the two reasons I created WAR TIME STORY TIME. These men in these photos both live in Houston County. They were both in battles together and didn't know it until they started talking at WAR TIME STORY TIME. The first photo is Mr. Wolf and Mr. Morgan. Mr. Morgan was my very first guest speaker. He started talking about the Battle of the Bulge and Mr. Wolf raised his hand and told him that his company came in and assisted him the fighting. The second picture is Mr. Manning and Mr. Wood. Both were in the Navy in the Pacific. When Mr. Manning spoke of the bombardment on the shore of Japan Mr. Wood said he was doing the same job but on a different ship.

WAR TIME STORY TIME

War Time Story Time started Feb. 2019. This free monthly program is for the public to come and hear the stories from our WWII veterans. Houston County is blessed with 43 known WWII veterans which includes the City of Warner Robins and the town of Perry. We don’t have a lot more time with these veterans and I want to make sure that we have a chance to hear what they have to tell us. A second objective of this program is for the veterans to meet and have camaraderie among one another. And the third objective for this program is perhaps other people will see this and decide to create a WAR TIME STORY TIME in their community. Karen Sisk
