Lyman Estate Greenhouses

Lyman Estate Greenhouses The Lyman Estate Greenhouses are among the oldest surviving greenhouses in the United States.
(12)

The complex of four greenhouses consists of an 1804 grape house, 1820 camellia house, 1840 orchid house, and a 1930 sales greenhouse where visitors can purchase plants to take home. At any time of year a visit to these picturesque greenhouses is a treat. Rare orchids covered with exotic flowers bloom throughout the year. During the summer, Black Hamburg and Green Muscat grapevines are laden with enormous clusters of fruit. Autumn in the greenhouses arrives with the sweet scent of citrus plants in bloom, followed by the arrival of their fruit. When winter is at its bleakest, the century-old camellia collection puts forth its magnificent blooms. The expert horticultural staff offers advice and assistance with plant selection and culture. The greenhouse specializes in orchids, exotic house plants, citrus fruits, camellias, and herbs. Five large specialty plant sales are held during the year. In our gift shop and sales greenhouse we offer not only plants, but also orchid growing supplies, pottery, gardening books, fertilizers, notecards, and garden gifts.

Euphoria obesa aka the Baseball Plant

Endangered in it's natural habitat, the Great Karoo region of S. Africa the obesa is a wonderful addition to any succulent collection. There are a couple left in the sales house and would make a great holiday gift!

I know our Fall Orchid Sale is a little more than a month away, so here's a little something while you wait... Miltonia spectabilis, long lasting blooms and a light powdery floral scent. Slightly tricky for windowsill growing, but well worth a visit to the greenhouse for the scent alone!

Our Spider Lily (Hymenocallis littoralis) is blooming, a sign that Fall is right around the corner! This tropical bulb blooms in late summer to fall, has a subtle vanilla scent, and can be grown in similar conditions to Amaryllis. While not your typical harbinger of fall in New England, we will take any sign at this point!
Open Tuesday- Saturday 930 am- 4 pm.

Two very different olfactory experiences happening now at the Greenhouse- one with the nostalgic scent of a root beer float, the other could kindly be described as 'rotting meat'. Can you guess which is which? Stop by and have a sniff, if you dare!
Hint: Don't smell the one with the flies swarming around it.

Its Grape season here at Lyman Greenhouses!

In 1870 George Lyman converted his fathers exotic fruit house into a Grapery, importing cuttings of table grapes from Hampton Court in England. The grapes we grow today are from cuttings of the same mother plants George Lyman planted!

Both varieties we grow (Black Hamburg and Green Muscat of Alexandra) are ripening quickly in this recent hot weather, come visit this delicious piece of history before the chipmunks and squirrels finish them off!

You can always find something colorful in every corner of the greenhouse! Mickey Mouse Plant (Ochna serrulata) growing out of the brick in the Grapehouse. We are loving its fragrant yellow flowers right now, but this plant is also lauded for its black berries that hang below the bright red sepals, often resembling the face of Mickey Mouse. A great houseplant and bonsai subject, available for purchase in our Sales house.
