Walpack Historical Society

Walpack Historical Society WHS stimulates an awareness & interest in the Walpack area through lectures, tours & special events. We also maintain a small museum.

It promotes collection, preservation and dissemination of Walpack area history and acts as a repository for artifacts of the Walpack area. At this time, the WHS does not do Genealogy. Funding has been made available in part by the New Jersey Historical Commission through the County History Partnership Program, as administered by the Sussex County Arts & Heritage Commission.

We can't assume blacklegged deer ticks are evil, but they do resemble Darth Maul a little too much for our liking.

Blacklegged ticks are present all year long in the eastern half of the United States but are most likely to be seen (biting you) during the spring, summer, and fall.

Their lifespan is about two to three years, with life stages as eggs, larva, nymph, and adult. After hatching, a blood meal (gross) is needed at each stage of their lifecycle to survive. These ticks need each life stage blood meal to be from a different host, which can be mammals, reptiles, or amphibians. Have we said blood meal enough yet?

Blacklegged ticks carry diseases by picking up pathogens from animal hosts and transferring them to their human hosts. The pathogens found in blacklegged ticks include Borrelia burgdorferi (Lyme disease), Powassan virus, Anaplasma phagocytophilum (Anaplasmosis), Borrelia miyamotoi (Hard Tick Relapsing Fever), and Babesia microti (Babesiosis).

Some ways to defend yourself against these Sith-like suckers include:
🐞 Treating your clothing and gear with permethrin or repellants recognized by the EPA to repel or kill ticks.
🐞 Wear light or bright colored clothing so ticks are more visible.
🐞 Tuck pants into socks to prevent ticks from crawling into your pants.
🐞 Stay on trail and avoid walking through brushy or grassy areas.
🐞 Do a tick check on your clothing before getting into a vehicle or walking into your house.
🐞 Tumble dry clothing on high for at least 10 minutes to kill any ticks.
🐞 Shower and do a thorough tick check all over your body, including the cracks and crevasses.

Stay tick free, and May the Fourth be with you!
