U.S. Army Reserve Command Sergeant Major (CSM) Jack Hanson, a Vietnam War veteran, will represent his fellow Purple Heart heroes as Iowa’s honoree at the 2021 Purple Heart Patriot Project. Hanson first joined the Navy Reserve in 1965, during his senior year of high school. After graduating in 1966, he enlisted in the U.S. Marine Corps where he served on active duty for six years. Deployed to Vietnam in November 1967, then-PFC Hanson was awarded the Purple Heart as a results of fragment wounds he suffered from exploding shrapnel and mortar shells during a clash on January 8, 1968, near Thau Thien, South Vietnam. BIG NEWS! The National Purple Heart Honor Mission has announced that Purple Heart recipient, retired U.S. Marine Corps Staff Sgt. Johnny Joey Jones, will be awarded the 2021 Genesis Legacy Medal.
Jones joined the U.S. Marine Corps in April 2005 and was deployed to Iraq in 2007 and 2008 before being sent to Afghanistan in March of 2010. On August 6, of that year, he and his explosive ordnance disposal (EOD) team were searching for improvised explosive devices (IEDs) in the Helmand Province. After the team cleared a device, Jones stepped on an IED. He suffered severe damage to his right forearm and both wrists and lost both legs above the knees as a result of the IED explosion.

U.S. Army Staff Sergeant Robert Sodergren served on active duty for three years, from 1965 to 1968, including time with the 101st Airborne Division and the 173rd Airborne Brigade. During Operation Junction City, SSG Sodergren was on a recon patrol when he was ambushed. During the attack, Sodergren suffered a shrapnel wound to the head. In addition to his Purple Heart, Mr. Sodergren received numerous commendations and awards, including the Combat Infantryman Badge, the Army Commendation Medal and more. Sodergren of Harwinton, a Vietnam War veteran, will represent his fellow Purple Heart heroes as Connecticut’s representative at the 2021 Purple Heart Patriot Project, a multi-day tribute to the courage and sacrifice of American’s combat wounded.
U.S. Army Sergeant First Class (SFC) Steven Zerger of Pueblo, a Vietnam War veteran, will represent his fellow Purple Heart heroes as Colorado’s representative at a multi-day tribute to the courage and sacrifice of American’s combat wounded. A twenty-three-year veteran of U.S. Army, Zerger enlisted in November 1965 and served in Vietnam from 1968 to 1971. In April 1971, while stationed in the A Shau Valley, Zerger was wounded during an enemy ambush. In addition to his Purple Heart, SFC Zerger received numerous commendations and awards, including the National Defense Service Medal, the Bronze Star Medal, the Vietnam Cross of Gallantry with Palm and more.

On December 7, 1941, the Japanese military launched a surprise attack on the United States Naval Base at Pearl Harbor, Hawaii. The attack - which President Franklin Roosevelt would later proclaim would "live in infamy" - killed 2,403 U.S. personnel, including 68 civilians, and destroyed or damaged 19 U.S. Navy ships, including 8 battleships. Today, the battleship USS Arizona remains sunken in Pearl Harbor with its crew onboard. A United States flag flies above the sunken battleship, which serves as a memorial to all Americans who died in the attack.
Nearly two million Americans have been awarded the Purple Heart. Unfortunately, there is no publicly available master database of all those who have been wounded or killed in action while protecting our nation and the freedoms we cherish. Alaska's honoree for the 2021 Purple Heart Patriot Project is U.S. Army SGM Stephen Blair (Ret.) A thirty-five-year veteran of the U.S. Army, former SGM Stephen Blair enlisted in February 1982. In July 2012, while deployed to Afghanistan as part of Operation Enduring Freedom, Blair was returning from a patrol in Zabul Province when the vehicle where he was the gunner was hit by a improvised explosive device (IED). While serving aboard the USS McCawley during #WWII, Signalman First Class Munro was #killedinaction during an attempt to evacuate a battalion of Marines that were trapped by the Japanese at Point Cruz, Guadalcanal. Munro volunteered as Officer in Charge of a group of twenty-four Higgins boats that would complete the evacuation. Munro led five of the twenty-four crafts toward the shore where the Marines were located, while under heavy machine gun fire. Munro used his own boat as a shield between his own troops and the Japanese gunfire to allow the other crafts to land ashore and carry out the rescue. Munro was awarded the Medal of Honor for his gallantry and sacrifice.
