Northwest Diving History Association

Northwest Diving History Association The Northwest Diving History Association, a 501 (c) (3) non-profit corporation, registered and licensed in the State of Washington.

Throughout the North Pacific’s coastal and inland cold-water diving region, from Northern California to Alaska, there are scores of diving memorabilia collections that are looking for a home. These valuable private collections include old books, magazines, local dive club newsletters, unique artwork and cartoons, and lots of old photos. Some collections include unique, and valuable, artifacts that were gathered underwater by our favorite “underwater scroungers.” There are also countless stories to be told, some are very funny “sea stories,” some are in the category of “stupid ideas,” and many are valuable documentations of our diving history. The Museum Project: The NWDHA is developing the museum to feature our Northwest Diving History. We will feature the people and their stories, as well as exhibits of vintage diving equipment, books, magazines, photos and other memorabilia. Throughout our region, there are many diving pioneers that have not gained notoriety in the industry, however their contributions to the diving community have been invaluable. We will share their stories and achievements with you, and honor them, because they deserve to be recognized.

Mission: Mission Statement: Record and preserve the history of Recreational & Scientific Scuba Diving throughout our North Pacific, cold-water diving region, and provide the resources necessary to share the stories of the people and events, and exhibit the collections of equipment, books, magazines, photos and other memorabilia.

Linda and I had a great trip and adventure to Eugene, OR yesterday with the Eugene Skin Divers Supply group and the Eugene Dive Club. I presented a slide show featuring NW diving pioneers and our new book - Diving Off the Oregon Coast. Thanks Jim Pendergrass, Diana & Michael Hollingshead and the many diving enthusiasts. Eugene Skindivers Supply is the oldest active dive store in the northwest founded by Don Hollingshead in 1956.

We are entering out 5th year as an association and we have many people to thank for their support and wisdom that has helped us pursue our mission. Last year we set up our first official museum exhibit at the Foss Waterway Seaport in Tacoma, thanks to the efforts of Ryan Spence. We’ve recorded many interviews of diving pioneers that are posted on the website. We held the first official Northwest Sea Story Telling contest in more than 20 years and presented Floyd Holcom with the revolving 1st place trophy, a ship’s wheel that was donated by Rick & Ann Kaiser. We published a book featuring the history of diving on the Oregon coast. We participated in the Historical Diving Society annual conference and gave a presentation on the Northwest Diving Pioneers.

We are honoring four of our Northwest diving leaders that received awards this month for their work and contributions to diving in many areas of education and science, and to NAUI (National Association of Underwater Instructors).

Congratulations to Spence Campbell (NAUI #A-20) and Jim Willoughby (NAUI # 983 - RIP) for receiving the NAUI Hall of Honor Award honoring them for their more than 20 years of continued service to NAUI. Both Spence and Jim have volunteered countless hours mentoring, training and entertaining divers at all levels, especially in the development of NAUI Instructors. They’ve both devoted much more than 20 years of service and Spence still mentors and participates in diving events in the Northwest. This is a very high honor presented by NAUI to a very few worthy persons that have contributed significantly to the growth of NAUI and to diving education. Spence and Jim are true “Diving Pioneers” and have both been a part of the development of the Northwest Diving History Association. Joining Spence and Jim are Harry Ellis of Hawaii and John Duggan of Texas.

Congratulation to Dr. Barry Moore (NAUI #6790) for the NAUI Environmental Enrichment Award for his work to restore and protect freshwater lakes over the past 3 decades. He is currently employed as Associate Professor in the School of the Environment at Washington State University, where he has taught limnology (aquatic ecology) and watershed management as a faculty member since 1992 and has taught Scuba since 1982. He has been principal investigator on a great number and variety of research projects concerning lake, stream and reservoir water quality and management.

Congratulations to Floyd Holcom (NAUI #48075) for the Continuing Service Award for his work on Bylaws and Board Procedures Committee. Floyd has also contributed a lot to the NAUI NW leadership development programs and the Northwest Diving History Association program.

The past 55 years of NAUI success is a direct result of the volunteer contributions from many individuals that are dedicated to quality diving education. Thank You ALL.
