For those passionate about history, Weston County boasts numerous historic sites worth exploring. A notable one is the Jenney Stockade Cabin, situated near the Anna Miller Museum in Newcastle. However, the cabin's current location differs from its original site. The first expedition into the Black Hills commenced in 1857, seventeen years prior to Custer's arrival, established a semi-permanent camp along Beaver Creek. By 1875, this camp evolved into a more permanent fixture with the construction of the Jenney Stockade Cabin, which served as a supply depot for Black Hills camps and eventually became a vital stop on the Cheyenne to Deadwood stage route. As the area transitioned to the Lake Cattle Company (LAK) requiring more modern facilities, this historic structure was relocated to its present site, allowing visitors to experience a glimpse of history in the Wide Open. 🏞️✨

As the school bell prepares to toll for a new year, let's take a moment to reflect on the rich history of Weston County, particularly the once-thriving mining town of Cambria. In the late 1800s and early 1900s, Cambria was the very heart of Weston County, a bustling coal mining hub that has since become a ghost town. The children of the miners required an educational space, leading to the establishment of the Cambria school atop a canyon, where students had to trek up 365 steps to reach their classrooms. And you thought your commute was tough! 🏫✨
