Walk around your house and look for anything green touching the walls. The siding behind it is often in worse shape than the rest of the wall 👇

🌬️ Branches sand the paint. Every breeze drags twigs and leaves back and forth across the same spot. Over a few seasons that wears through the finish the way fine sandpaper would, usually in a patch you cannot see without pulling the plant aside.

💧 Leaves hold water on the wall. After rain the open wall can dry within hours. The section behind a dense shrub stays wet much longer because no sun or air reaches it. Paint and caulk that stay damp break down years ahead of the rest.

🌱 Young trees are the ones to deal with now. A tree growing this close to the wall, like the one in this photo, gets bigger every year. Left alone it ends up in the gutters and against the eaves, with roots right along the foundation.

🐜 Plants that touch the house also give ants and other insects an easy bridge onto the walls and into gaps around trim.

⚠️ The mistake at repaint time: painting around the shrub instead of moving it. The crew works around the branches, the wall behind them gets a thin coat or none, and the one spot that needed the most protection gets the least.

🔍 Try this. Pull one branch back and compare the siding behind it with the open wall a few feet away. Darker patches, green film, chalky or worn paint, or soft wood all mean the plant has been holding moisture there.

📏 The target is roughly 18 to 24 inches between shrubs and the wall, and much more for trees. If a repaint is on your list for spring, getting the landscaping pulled back ahead of time makes the job faster and the finish last longer.

Lattice looks like the easiest thing on a porch to maintain. It is often the first part of a porch to rot, and it starts where you cannot see 👇

✖️ Every crossing is a seam. Lattice is thin strips laid over each other at an angle and stapled where they meet. That makes hundreds of spots per panel where two pieces of wood sit flat against each other.

💧 Water gets pulled into those seams. A gap that tight draws rain in the way a paper towel draws up a spill, and there is almost no air in there to dry it. The faces dry in an afternoon. The crossings stay damp for days.

🖌️ A brush only reaches the faces. When lattice is stained or painted by hand, the finish covers the parts you can see and skips the inside of every crossing, the exact spot that needs it most.

🪚 Thin strips move fast. Wetting and drying makes them swell and shrink more than a thick board would, so the staples loosen and the strips split right at the fastener.

⚠️ The mistake that wastes money: recoating lattice that has already gone soft at the crossings. The new finish looks good for a season and seals the damp wood underneath. Soft strips get replaced first, then everything is finished.

🔍 Check yours this week. Press a thumbnail or the tip of a screwdriver into a few crossings on the bottom two rows. Firm wood is fine. If it sinks in, or the crossings are darker than the strips around them, water has been living there.

🍂 Before winter is the right time to look. A crossing that is soft now can be split by spring after a few hard freezes.

A crack running off the top corner of a door frame is not a paint problem, and filling it will not make it go away 👇

🚪 Openings are the weak spot in a wall. The framing over a door or window breaks up the wall, and its corners are where stress gathers. When a house settles, dries out over the winter or has a door slammed a few hundred times, the corner is where the wall gives.

📐 The shape tells you what it is. A thin line leaving the corner, straight across or at a slight angle like the one in this photo, is a stress crack. It usually starts right at the casing and wanders toward the ceiling or the next corner.

🧱 Why filler fails. Spackle or caulk pushed into the line is a plug, not a bridge. The wall keeps moving a little every season, nothing ties the two sides together, and the crack opens back up through the fresh paint.

🧰 What holds. The crack gets opened slightly, anything loose is secured, and fiberglass mesh tape goes across it. Setting-type compound, which hardens chemically and shrinks less than premixed mud, goes over the tape and gets feathered out wide. Then it is sanded and primed, and the whole wall is repainted so the repair disappears.

🏚️ In an older house with plaster walls, press gently beside the crack first. If the surface flexes or crunches, the plaster has let go of the lath behind it and has to be reattached before any patch will hold.

📏 A check you can do today: mark both ends of the crack in pencil and write the date next to it. If it has grown past your marks in a couple of months, or doors are starting to stick and bind, have the framing looked at before anyone repairs the finish.

⚠️ The mistake: caulking the line the day before the room gets repainted. It looks perfect at the walkthrough and is back by spring.

📅 Fall is the right time to mark it. Cracks tend to open wider once the heat comes on and the air dries out, so a line you mark now tells you a lot by midwinter.

That green film on the shady side of your house is not dirt. It is alive, and a pressure washer alone will not get rid of it 👇

🟢 It is algae, sometimes with mildew mixed in. It shows up on north-facing walls, under overhangs and behind shrubs: anywhere the sun does not reach and the surface stays damp after rain.

🔬 It grows into the surface, not just on it. Paint, brick and mortar all have tiny pores, and the growth anchors itself inside them. Wash off the green you can see and the part inside is still there, which is why it so often comes back within a season.

💦 More pressure makes it worse. A narrow, high-pressure tip drives water behind siding laps, into mortar joints and around window frames, where it has no way out. On wood it raises the grain and cuts grooves. On older or soft brick it can strip the face.

🧴 Soft washing is the fix. A cleaning solution goes on at low pressure, sits long enough to kill the growth down in the pores, and is rinsed off gently from the top down. Nearby plants get wet down and covered first.

⚠️ The mistake that costs a paint job: painting over growth that was only blasted, not killed. It keeps living under the new coat, and the paint lets go right where the green used to be.

🧪 Not sure whether it is growth or grime? Wearing gloves and eye protection, put a few drops of diluted household bleach on one spot. If it lightens within a couple of minutes, it is growth. If nothing changes, it is dirt.

🍂 Why bother before winter? Growth that is killed now is not sitting on the wall holding moisture all winter, and the house is ready for exterior paint as soon as the weather allows.

Painted the trim around your fireplace this year? Give it time before you light the first fire of the season 👇

🎨 Dry and cured are not the same thing. Latex paint feels dry within an hour or two, but it keeps hardening for roughly two to four weeks. Until then it is still soft underneath.

🔥 Heat pushes that soft paint the wrong way. Warm a fresh coat and it can go tacky, pick up soot, and fill the room with a paint smell. Trim right above the opening takes the most heat, so that is where it shows first.

⬛ The black metal front is its own surface. On most factory-built fireplaces the face and door frame get much hotter than the wood around them. Wall paint or trim enamel on that metal blisters and peels. It takes a high-heat paint made for stoves and grills, and nothing else.

📏 Adding a thicker surround or a new mantel? Factory-built fireplaces come with an installation manual that lists how close wood trim and a mantel are allowed to sit to the opening. The model number is on a metal label on the unit. Look it up before anything gets built out.

⚠️ The mistake we see: soot above the opening, scrubbed with a wet sponge and cleaner. Water turns dry soot into a gray smear and pushes it into the paint. A dry soot sponge lifts it first. Then the area gets washed, spot-primed with a stain blocker if needed, and painted.

🍂 Timing matters because the first cold snap is close. Trim painted in the next week or two has time to harden before most families start using the fireplace regularly.

That strip of tape holding up your kid's drawing can take a piece of your wall with it when it comes down 👇

🎨 Tape and adhesive hooks don't grip the drywall. They grip the paint. And the paint is only held on as well as it was bonded when it went up.

🧱 On flat paint, on walls that were never primed, or on paint that went on over dust, that bond is weak. The adhesive can hold tighter than the paint holds the wall, so the paint lifts off in a strip.

📄 Pull hard or fast and it can go one layer deeper, tearing the brown paper face of the drywall.

⚠️ This is where most DIY patches go wrong. Spread joint compound or paint straight over torn paper and the water soaks into the fibers. They swell, and the patch bubbles up. Exposed paper needs a solvent-based sealer first, before any water-based product goes near it.

🐢 Taking tape down without damage: peel it slowly, folded back on itself, keeping it low and close to the wall. A hair dryer on low for a few seconds softens stubborn adhesive.

🪝 Stick-on hooks with a pull tab: stretch the tab straight down along the wall, slowly. Pulling it outward toward you is what takes the paint.

🗓️ After a fresh paint job, give the walls time. Adhesive strip makers generally say to wait about a week after painting before sticking anything up.

Orange spots along the bottom of your front or back door are not a cosmetic issue. They are the start of a bigger repair 👇

🚪 A steel entry door is a thin steel skin wrapped over a core. That steel is protected only as long as the coating on it is intact.

🌧️ The bottom of the door takes the worst of the weather. Rain runs down the glass and panels and gathers at the base, and the threshold and stoop keep that strip damp long after a storm.

👟 That is also where the paint gets knocked. Shoes, strollers, packages and pet claws chip it, and every chip is bare steel sitting in water.

🟠 Rust does not stay where you see it. It creeps sideways under the paint, which is why small orange dots turn into bubbled, flaking patches.

⚠️ The mistake that makes it worse: a quick coat of paint over the spots. It looks fixed for a season while the rust keeps spreading underneath, and the next repair is bigger.

🔍 Check yours today. Open the door and look along the lower rail and bottom edge. Run your fingertip over the paint there. Bumps, blisters or orange staining under the surface mean corrosion has already started.

🛠️ The right repair is sanding each spot to clean metal, a rust-inhibiting primer, then a hard exterior enamel, with the bottom edge coated too. It is also worth checking the door sweep and whether your stoop drains away from the door.

❄️ Get it done before winter. Snowmelt and de-icing salt at the threshold speed rust up considerably.

Rolling paint onto a textured ceiling can pull the texture right off with it. Here is what is going on 👇

🌀 Textured ceilings, from popcorn to knockdown to the swirled stomp pattern in this photo, are built from drywall compound or a sprayed material. It is porous, and plenty of them never got a coat of paint after they were applied.

💦 Ceiling paint is usually water-based. On unsealed texture, that water soaks in and softens the material holding the texture together.

🧲 Then the roller does the rest. A wet nap is sticky, and as it rolls it grabs the softened texture and peels it away, sometimes in pieces the size of your hand.

🔁 Going back over the same spot makes it worse. Back-rolling a textured ceiling while it is wet is how a small bald patch becomes a large one.

⚠️ The costly mistake: finding this out halfway through the room. Now the job is scraping, re-texturing and matching the pattern, not painting.

🧪 How to check your own ceiling: pick a hidden spot, like inside a closet, and dab it with a damp sponge. If the texture turns soft or comes off on your finger, it has not been sealed and needs a solvent-based primer before any latex touches it.

☢️ One important note on popcorn. In homes built before the mid-1980s it may contain asbestos. Have it tested before anyone scrapes or sands it.

Painting a garage door looks like an easy Saturday job. It is also one of the easiest exterior jobs to get wrong 👇

🚪 Your door is not one flat panel. It is four or five sections hinged together, and every time it opens they fold apart at the joints and bend around the track. Fresh paint gets stretched right along those lines.

⏳ Paint can feel dry within an hour and still be soft underneath for much longer. Open the door that same afternoon and the finish cracks at every joint, which is the cracked pattern you see on a lot of repainted doors.

🧽 Steel doors chalk. After years of sun, the factory finish turns to a fine powder. Wipe your door with a dark cloth: if it comes away white, any paint rolled on without a thorough wash is sticking to dust, not to the door.

🟫 Look low, too. Dents and scrapes near the bottom expose bare steel, and a quick topcoat over those spots lets rust keep working underneath. Those areas need a metal primer first.

⚠️ The mistake we see most: paint on the rubber seal along the bottom and sides. It stiffens the rubber, cracks, and can glue the door to its stop so the next opening peels the finish off.

🎨 Thinking about a dark color? Check your door's manual first. Some manufacturers warn against very dark finishes on certain models because of heat buildup.

🍂 Mild, dry fall days are ideal for this. The door needs a stretch of good weather while it stays shut.

That brown ring on your ceiling will come right back through a fresh coat of paint. Here is why 👇

💧 When water leaks through a ceiling, it does not arrive clean. It picks up minerals, dust and tannins on the way down, and when the water evaporates, all of that stays behind in the drywall as the ring you can see.

🎨 Most ceiling paint is water-based. Roll it over the ring and the water in the paint dissolves that residue all over again. As the coat dries, the residue rides up to the surface and the stain reappears, sometimes before the roller is even washed.

🔁 A second coat of the same paint usually does the same thing. People end up three coats deep and still looking at the outline.

🧱 What stops it is a stain-blocking primer that is not water-based, typically a shellac or solvent product. It locks the residue in place so the finish coat has nothing to pull through.

⚠️ The mistake that costs the most: sealing a stain before anyone confirms the leak is fixed and the board is dry. The stain disappears, the leak keeps going, and the next sign is a sagging ceiling instead of a ring.

✏️ A simple check you can do tonight. Trace the edge of the stain lightly in pencil. If the ring has grown past your line after the next heavy rain or a few showers upstairs, the leak is still active. Press gently near the ring too. Soft or crumbly board has to be replaced, not painted.

🍂 Fall is a good time to deal with it. Summer storms and AC condensate lines leave a lot of these behind, and a ceiling has to dry out completely before it gets sealed.
