The Pennsylvania Trolley Museum began in 1954 with three trolleys and a dream. Today, that dream is a reality. We now display a collection of nearly 50 cars with over a dozen in operating order, have over 150 regular volunteers, and receive over 30,000 visitors each year. With your support, we can continue to fulfill our mission to keep the Trolley Era alive for generations to come. More than a ride... it's an experience!

Thank you to the staff and volunteers who represented the Pennsylvania Trolley Museum and walked in today’s Canonsburg Fourth of July Parade!

And thank you as well to everyone who told us how much they love the PTM today. Your support is what keeps the trolleys running!

Since falls on the 4th of July, it only makes sense to share a photo of PATransit 1776! The car was decorated in red, white, and blue to celebrate the United States Bicentennial in 1976. Stars and the words "The Spirit of 1776" were also painted on the car.

While you can’t take a ride on this particular car today, you’re welcome to climb aboard one of our operating cars instead! Stop by before 3:00 (when the last tickets for the day are sold) and enjoy your visit on this beautiful Independence Day!

This we’re shining the spotlight on Pittsburgh Railways Co. 3756. This car is very special to us as it’s one of our founding cars. It was built in 1925, making 2025 its 100th birthday (and as you can see: it’s still running well in its old age)!

Our campers had a wonderful time diving into history this week during History Explorers Camp, where we explored what life was like in the 1800s and early 1900s! Special thanks to our friends at the John White House and the Master Gardeners for sharing so much with our campers.

: To the days when you rode a trolley to Kennywood!

Kennywood was originally built by Monongahela Street Railways Co. as a trolley park - a recreational area for picnics and get-togethers.

The park opened on May 30, 1898.; so the next time you visit Kennywood, take a moment to appreciate that you're taking part in 127 years of local history!

Thank you Washington County Commissioners for honoring the three decades of effort put in by our retired Executive Director, Scott Becker. We are so proud to continue the legacy he helped build!

The Pennsylvania Trolley Museum’s former leader Scott Becker is riding off into the sunset with a big honor from the Washington County commissioners. Becker, who retired as director at the end of May, received a certificate of appreciation and plenty of praise from the commissioners as he leaves t...

Our Story

The Pennsylvania Trolley Museum came to Chartiers Township, Washington County in February 1954 with three trolleys and a dream that was born in 1941. Today, that dream is a reality. PTM now boasts a collection of nearly 50 street and electric railway cars (20 of which are operational on the museum’s four mile ride), over 600 members worldwide, 150 active volunteers, and over 30,000 visitors each year.

The main appeal of the Pennsylvania Trolley Museum? Visitors don’t just “see” the past; they “experience” it for themselves on an unforgettable ride through the countryside. So be sure to stop by the museum sometime! With your support, either as a visitor or a member, we can fulfill our mission to keep the Trolley Era alive for generations to come, and continue to show how the streetcar played a vital role in the growth of 20th century American cities.
