Jonathan Ryan Storm

“Untitled “
Sewn fabric on canvas 2020
8 x 10 inches

Jonathan Ryan Storm’s work is about finding balance while solving a puzzle. He initiates his paintings with a basic strategy: working his way into a corner in order to find his way out. It's a deliberate process, not an experiment. Colors are applied in the beginning by chance, from one end of the painting to the other, one section perhaps green, another red. As in the opening chess move, traps are laid where colors conflict with one another, where circles mirror each other and, in order to advance, some are sacrificed.

Storm received his BA in Metaphysics from Wheaton College in 2003. His recent solo exhibitions include Morgan Lehman Gallery in New York City; Cardoza, Menil Bookstore and David Shelton Gallery in Houston; and Farewell Books in Austin. Group exhibitions include Big Medium in Austin; Circuit12 and Ware:Wolf:Haus in Dallas; The Brandon and David Shelton Gallery in Houston; Neuer Saarbrücker Kunstverein in Germany; and GoodPress in Scotland..

At Camp 1 & 2 (Diptych– 2 Pieces)
Simultaneously lewd and sweet, this cheeky diptych painting compiles and transforms found images of nudists and exhibitionists through line and subtle color washes. Gluibizzi thought about his camp counselors a lot as a young teen. As the artist collected images to mix and match in his compositions, he created figures that stood in for the figures in his early daydreams.

In this composition, Gluibizzi explores our image-saturated digital world—archiving, ordering and puzzling collected figures into open narratives. The figures in the painting are emblematic of the uncertainty that prevades our digitally mediated past, present and future. At the same time, this painting celebrates the beautifully complex search for connections humans undergo as they face the world.

How Long Shall I Have to Wait
This intricate charcoal drawing transforms the body's configuration through costume. In their drawings, the collaborative duo VOW playfully explores the contrast between hyper-feminine and hyper-masculine figuration. The artists' drawings create a third space that challenges the very concept of this duality. Hidden behind elaborate garments and mysterious theatrical cloaks, their royal-like figures elude the viewer's direct gaze—and escape any narrow interpretation of their being. VOW creates an alternate reality in which genders are blended and social statuses redefined; their work depicts figures freed from the norms and conventions of our world.

“Lake Swim”
Simultaneously lewd and sweet, this cheeky painting compiles and transforms found images of nudists and exhibitionists through line and subtle color washes. The title refers to Gluibizzi's erotic memories of night lake swimming during summer camp.

In this composition, Gluibizzi explores our image-saturated digital world—archiving, ordering and puzzling collected figures into open narratives. The figures in the painting are emblematic of the uncertainty that prevades our digitally mediated past, present and future. VOW creates an alternate reality in which genders are blended and social statuses redefined; their work depicts figures freed from the norms and conventions of our world.
VOW looks to the history of theater, pageantry and ceremony in order to dissect the constructive and protective nature of dress. Their work explores themes of body transformation and protection through ornamentation—drawing influence from René Lalique’s glass designs and contemporary fashion, among other sources. VOW's work explores how costume can become like armor, shielding the body as well as empowering it. The artists work with heavyweight paper, repetitively sanding it down and re-coating it with layers of charcoal in a process that reflects their interest in body encasement and transfiguration.

Fifteen at nine thirty
Simultaneously lewd and sweet, this cheeky painting compiles and transforms found images of nudists and exhibitionists through line and subtle color washes. For this work, Gluibizzi draws from both childhood memories of n**e beaches and years spent perusing art books—as well as images found through internet searches.

In this composition, Gluibizzi explores our image-saturated digital world—archiving, ordering and puzzling collected figures into open narratives. The figures in the painting are emblematic of the uncertainty that prevades our digitally mediated past, present and future. VELVET OTHER WORLD
At His Majesty’s Pleasure
Charcoal on paper 2021
36.0 × 36.0

Velvet Other World is a collaborative duo formed in 2021 by Josh Allen and Katrina Pisetti.
In their intricate charcoal drawings, VOW creates an alternate reality in which genders are blended and social statuses redefined, freed from the norms and conventions of our world.

Playing with the contrast between perceived figurative hyper femininity and hyper masculine structural compositions, they shape a third space challenging the very concept of duality. Hidden behind elaborate garments in a theatrical cloak of mystery,  their royal-like figures elude our direct gaze and escape our narrowed interpretation of their very being.

Collaboration as a practice is a unique yet daunting commitment very few artists chose to take on. It requires adaptability, flexibility and a deep understanding of one another. Observing VOW at work is akin to witnessing a complex organism permanently in sync. They function as one, building simultaneously different parts of a piece with intriguing homogeneity.

Best friends of over 7 years, Josh and Kat met at RISD where their common obsession for the technical aspects of drawing brought  them first to compete before becoming close. While Kat chose to focus primarily on printmaking, pushing figuration when encompassed in darkness and opacity to its limits, Josh explored redefining masculinity and how to decenter our understanding of the body. After losing touch for a few years they reconnected in 2020 with the will to share a studio. The impetus to start collaborating came organically and developed into a new form, at the crossroad of their interests and passions.

Inspired by fe**sh fashion, q***r photography or art deco glass works, VOW combines in their drawings broad yet destinctive visual influences with an idiosyncratic technical language in which smooth heavily saturated charcoal black surfaces meet expressive textural details and subtle radiant accents.

Their figures evoke pageantry and courtship, regality, Russian ballet, bo***ge and anime and live in an hybrid and fascinating phantasmagoric universe of VOW’s making.

‘‘My work is a distilled reflection of the of the significant moments, lessons and inspirations of my life. Pulling imagery from both my childhood, currently and perhaps the future simultaneously. I want my pictures to tell a story that is not an obvious one, but one that takes a moment of contemplation and discovery while pushing boundaries of ugliness and beauty. It invites the observer to recognize that one cannot exist without the other. To me beauty is a choice by way of transmutation thus, only existing through perception. Because of this my work is organic in a way that it is constantly evolving and transforming itself.’’
