Anicka Yi’s “Radiolaria” sculptures resemble giant living cells—suspended forms that seem to drift through the gallery, gently undulating as if pulled from the ocean’s depths.🐙

⚡Light flickers across their fiber-optic surfaces, revealing a delicate interplay between handwoven structure and mechanical precision.
Inspired by marine organisms that first appeared on earth over 500 million years ago, Yi invites us to contemplate deep time, interdependence, and the porous boundary between life and its simulacra. These luminous beings are not only speculative creatures of the future—they are reminders that even the air we breathe is shaped by ancient, invisible systems still unfolding around us.

At our Conservation Center, the Science Lab works closely with all departments to answer key questions and unravel the mysteries of art. 🔬 🖼️

💡Take this fascinating painting, a copy of John Singleton Copley's "Watson and the Shark," attributed to the London-based Polygraphic Society, which was active from 1784 to 1795.

It's a perfect example of cross-department🤝collaboration. See 👀 between the Science, Imaging, and Painting converge in our Conservation labs.

And, : Curatorial Assistant of American Painting and Sculpture, Alice Chambers, brought attention to a possibility that this artwork may have been created using a "chemical and mechanical" process that allowed it to precisely replicate the oil painting at a fraction of the cost.

? One more thing! The founder of the Polygraphic Society, Joseph Booth, never revealed his exact method. However, research suggests that it could have involved techniques like block printing, screen printing, or stenciling large color areas, followed by hand-finishing details. In this image, you can see our conservation team closely examining the painting, searching for clues 🔎 that will help us understand the method used and further our work on attributing this painting—and others like it.

We are excited to introduce our upcoming exhibition, “Anicka Yi.”🧬

Anicka Yi’s work dissolves boundaries between biology and technology, proposing new ways of thinking about perception, sentience, and survival. Her practice blends scientific research with philosophical inquiry and sensory experience, drawing from microbiology, artificial intelligence, perfumery, and Buddhist thought. Yi constructs immersive worlds that reimagine how life—and art—might evolve, mutate, and persist.✨

Born in Seoul, South Korea, in 1971, Yi moved to the United States at a young age. Her practice springs from an interest in fashion, unorthodox materials, and social engagement combined with a conceptual inquiry into science, technology, and her Korean heritage.

🤩 See this incredible exhibition for yourself starting Sunday, June 29.
