We are so thrilled to have contributed 21 photos, taken by five American photographers, to the Hermitage Museum's growing Contemporary Art Collection.

All photos belong to the genre of street photography that is characterized by the aesthetic of everyday life.

Prof. Mikhail Piotrovsky stressed the importance of the gift from the Hermitage Museum Foundation (USA):
“This is a very important addition to our collection, and besides, it is important that in a situation where there are hardly any ties with America, we are receiving gifts from the United States. I very much hope that perhaps our links and exchanges with the USA will be the first thing to be restored when relations between our countries improve. This is therefore a very significant and symbolic gift.”

This phenomenal object is at the Hermitage, and is a super-rare Christian Palestinian 18th century depiction of the Theophany on the skull of a crocodile.

Today, in Russia, and in the Orthodox world, one celebrates the Theophany (from the Greek: theos/God phanein/appear). This is the moment when Christ asks Saint John the Baptist to baptize Him in the waters of the Jordan. St John responds saying that he is not worthy of tying up Christ’s sandals, let alone baptizing Him (the source of all baptisms). Christ responds saying : Do as I say!

Today is the celebration of one of the most famous and worshipped icons- the Mother of God Hodegetria of Smolensk. One of the most important copies of this icon is held at the Hermitage, acquired in 1959.

Soldiers would make their vows of loyalty before this icon before setting off to battle. According to legend, the very earliest icon of this type was painted by Saint Luke himself, during the lifetime of the Holy Virgin Mary.

There are various depictions of the Hodegetria but the most ceremonial of these is usually known as the Virgin of Smolensk.

The Olympics are officially underway! 🥇

Let’s take a trip down memory lane all the way to ancient Greece, where the Olympics began. Athletics were of major importance in the life of the ancient Greeks. The games were held in honor of Zeus, and the Greeks gave them a mythological origin.

🏺Amphoras like this one were prizes at the Panathenaic Games at Athens. Sometimes up to 100 of them, depending on the contest, were presented to the victors. One side of the amphora would illustrate the contest, and the other- the goddess Athena. 🏺

We have Greece to thank for being glued to our TV’s for the next few weeks!

Frida Kahlo pushed back the boundaries of art, giving space to the hidden, the ignored – the personal. Her uncompromising, disturbing, gifted account laid the foundation for the aesthetic narrative of female artists in the 20th century.

Welcome July! ☀️ The summer is going by so fast, but we’re enjoying every bit of it!

If you find yourself amongst art, you may notice the Ancient Greek goddess of agriculture, harvest and fertility, Demeter (Roman name Ceres), often makes an appearance in summer scenes and allegories. In many paintings the goddess embodies the season, or the fruitful “abundance” associated with summer.

Happy Hermitage Caturday! 😻

This might be our most exciting one yet -

Achilles the ‘psychic’ Hermitage cat predicts Italy will win first match of Euro 2020! 🇮🇹

Bowls with cat food were traditionally placed before Achilles next to flags, and the cat made his choice!

Achilles, a snow white Hermitage cat with blue eyes, began his career as an 'oracle' in 2017 during the CAF Confederation Cup. Museum employees picked him for his ability to analyze things and unusual behavior. The cat correctly predicted outcomes of three out of four cup games, which were held in St. Petersburg, including the opening one and the final.

Achilles also showcased his gift at the 2018 FIFA World Cup. He predicted the winner of the first four matches without a single mistake.

Don't we all wish we had an Achilles in our lives? 😸

We are in awe of ’The Horseman', by Belgian artist Hans Op de Beeck , now on display at the Hermitage Courtyard.

This sculpture epitomizes the image of a nomad of the past or a wanderer of today, striving to find his place in this world.

Accompanied by a little pet monkey holding a parasol above the owner’s head to shield him from the sun, this traveler is on his search for a better life.

What do you all think of this beautiful sculpture?

Happy Earth Day! 🌍💫🌻🌿

“My wish is to stay always like this, living quietly in a corner of nature.” - Claude Monet

This work is a typical example of how the Impressionist artists sought to convey a passing glimpse or impression of nature as seen by the human eye. For this purpose Monet took a blooming garden as his motif, and very successfully created an image of vivid, changing nature.

Just a few days left of Zhang Huan’s exhibit ‘Hermitage Buddha’- on display through April 4th!

The inspiration of Hermitage Buddha came from the fragments of Buddha statues that he collected from Tibet. The image of the Hermitage Buddha as a giant mythical beast from outer space, which subverts reality, concentrates the conflict of beliefs. According to the artist, “Hermitage Buddha demonstrates the animal state of human nature. One leg of the beast steps on a human head, which wants to arch out of the eighteen layers of hell and come to the world from the netherworld. It is a kind of contradiction, a duel to prevent human beings from coming back to Heaven.”
