Lucy the Elephant Welcome to the OFFICIAL Lucy the Elephant FB page -Information straight from the elephant's trunk!

Lucy the Elephant, located on the beach in Margate City, New Jersey is a 65-foot, elephant-shaped building constructed of wood and tin in 1881 by James V. Lafferty in an effort to sell parcels of land at the Jersey shore. Since then the structure has served a variety of purposes over the last 140 years ranging from a real estate office, a tavern, and even a summer residence for a brief period; how

ever, for most of Lucy's life she has served as a tourist attraction and continues to do so today. Visitors to this amazing National Historic Landmark are able to take a Guided Tour through the structure, entering and exiting through spiral stair cases located in each of her rear legs which lead to Lucy's stomach. From there you won't want to miss the chance to look out Lucy's eyes to see what she sees while gazing out over the beach in Margate. Guests can also climb another set of twisting stairs up to Lucy's howdah (the riding carriage) perched atop Lucy's back to take in a spectacular 360 degree view of the Atlantic Ocean and surrounding areas. One visit and you'll see why kids and adult fall in love with Lucy and continue to visit year after year. We hope to see you soon at America's Oldest Roadside Attraction and the only elephant in the World you can walk through and come out alive -- Lucy the Elephant!

One of our Facebook followers shared this amazing photo with us—and it comes with quite the story! 📸

Apparently, their grandfather broke the rules and climbed outside Lucy’s howdah for a daring photo op. 😱 He got scolded, of course—the rule then (and now) is: stay INSIDE the howdah at all times!

We’re just glad no one was hurt—but what a snapshot in time! Check out the Margate boardwalk in the background, shining in all its glory before it was washed away by the Great Atlantic Hurricane of 1944. 🌊✨

For more than 20 years, we’ve dreamed of making Lucy fully ADA accessible—so everyone can experience her magic, barrier-free. Yesterday, we took the first giant step toward that dream. 💫

We began demolishing our beloved 50-year-old gift shop to make room for a brand-new, state-of-the-art interpretive center. It’s a bittersweet goodbye, but an exciting leap forward.

If all goes to plan, Lucy’s new accessible space will be ready this time next year! Stay tuned—we can’t wait to welcome EVERYONE inside. ❤️🐘

Lucy will remain open during this time for tours, with our temporary gift shop across the street at the corner of Washington and Atlantic Ave.

We received a question in the comments the other day asking how much of Lucy’s construction is original. 🧐

While Lucy’s “skin” was completely replaced during her recent top-to-toe makeover, her core structure—made from over a million hand-cut pieces of wood—is still about 70% original. In this photo, taken during Lucy’s recent restoration, you can see new pieces of wood being affixed to Lucy’s foot right next to original pieces that date back to 1881! 💪🐘

An Elephant Named Lucy

Originally named Elephant Bazaar, Lucy the Elephant was built by a real estate speculator who owned a great many parcels of land at the Jersey Shore. In order to attract visitors and potential buyers, James V. Lafferty built a six-story, elephant-shaped building as a novelty amusement. He patented his idea, ensuring that his structure would remain a unique piece of architecture. Eventually a popular hotel business was built around the structure. Presidents and royalty came from around the world to stay at the neighboring Elephant Hotel and climb the winding stairs up to Lucy’s howdah.

During her history Lucy has survived hurricanes, ocean floods, and even a fire started by some inebriated party-goers when she served as a tavern; however, by the 1960’s it became apparent there was one disaster Lucy could not overcome -- neglect. By that time, the once proud jewel of the South Jersey isles has become an almost hopeless, wretched wreck. It was then a new developer purchased the land where Lucy stood with the intent to build a new condomium on the site. The beach and ocean could stay -- but the elephant had to go!

To the rescue came the Save Lucy Committee, Inc. Within weeks, this small group of ordinary citizens raised enough money to move the entire decaying structure two blocks away to a new site owned by the City of Margate. Thirty years and over one million dollars later, Lucy the Elephant has been completely restored to her original splendor, inside and out. In 1976, Lucy was designated a National Historic Landmark by the United States Government as the oldest example of a unique form of “zoomorphic” architecture and is known as America’s Oldest Roadside Attraction. Today, Lucy the Elephant is every bit as popular and beloved as ever.
