“Designing Peace” asks us, “How can design support safe, healthy, respectful environments?” 🧶

In DETEXT’s “Maps” (Bullet Rug Series), Raúl Martínez gathers discarded bullet casings, weaving them by hand into shimmering rugs to tell hidden stories. Each casing is marked with a manufacturer’s code and country of origin and can thus be used to track international arms trafficking routes, backdoor diplomacy, and secret military interventions, exposing the complex economics that underpin gun violence.

The Bullet Rug Series showcases shimmering rugs that tell hidden stories of international arms trafficking. The first rug in the series, made of 9mm casings gathered in Guatemala, is stamped with marks from the United States, Russia, and Israel—the three main suppliers of weapons during the country’s civil war.

Reserve your free tickets to see “Maps” and the rest of “Designing Peace” during MCD’s Free Weekend on December 9-10 at sfmcd.org/events.

Another question posed in “Designing Peace” is, “How Can Design Address the Root Causes of Conflict?” ☮️

An Australian think tank tackles this question with the “Positive Peace Index” created to challenge the vast amount of research devoted to conflict. The index was designed to explore the drivers of peace with an aim to shift the world’s perception to peace as a positive, achievable, and tangible measure of human well-being and progress.

The organization designed a set of tools to measure peace around the world that provides a yearly snapshot of the level of positive peace around the globe—including the attitudes, institutions, and social structures that create and sustain peaceful societies. The index identifies factors that help make societies resilient to economic, political, and environmental turmoil and more adaptable to a changing world.

The “Positive Peace Index” encourages visitors to help build a more peaceful, just, and inclusive world by inviting them to take a postcard (or two), mail it, take a picture, and share it with friends, family, and on social media.

Learn more about the “Positive Peace Index” and reserve your tickets to see “Designing Peace” at sfmcd.org/exhibitions.

Help fuel MCD’s Mobile MakeArt! 🎨🚐

During just one week in October, MCD’s Mobile MakeArt van visited seven neighborhoods in San Francisco, offering free programs and MakeArt Kits to over 900 people. This is a typical week for the MakeArt team, which has delivered creative opportunities to more than 96,000 people since the MakeArt van’s tires first hit the road in 2020.

Our next step is to make essential upgrades to the MCD Mobile MakeArt van so that we can bring even more creativity to the community. Designed by MCD’s long-term partner Bionic, the MakeArt van upgrades will promote advancement of the field, efficiency, and ergonomics.

Please consider making a gift to MCD and double your donation! MCD’s Executive Director and Board Chair have generously offered to match all contributions, dollar for dollar, up to $5,000.

Your contribution of any size will help move MCD toward its $25,000 fundraising goal by December 31. Make your matching gift today at sfmcd.org/give.

Happy Women’s Entrepreneurship Day—today, we’re highlighting artist and small business owner, Saoirse Byrne ✨

Saoirse Byrne’s exploration of cordage began with learning how to twist wild harvested plants with Tamara Wilder. Curiously, she applied the process to the abundance of materials in her studio and life. Saoirse held onto her great grandmother’s threadbare handkerchief for decades—precious but altogether unusable—before transforming it into cordage. As cordage, it became a strong, loving reminder of her grandmother—a necklace that she could wear, and a process that she could share.

Saoirse Byrne will be sharing her process at MCD’s upcoming MakeArt Lab on December 2, and hosting a Trunk Show in the Museum Store that same day! Learn more about Saoirse’s upcoming events at MCD and reserve your tickets by tapping the link in our bio.

Pre-registration is required for the MakeArt Lab, but all are welcome to the Trunk Show.

“Designing Peace” asks us, “How can design engage creative confrontation?” ⏳️

One of the responses to this question is the “Extinction Symbol,” which was created to raise awareness of the need for transformative change in the face of an accelerating species extinction caused by humans. An unprecedented one million out of eight million plant and animal species are under threat.

Designed to be easily drawn, recognized, reproduced, and understood, a circle signifies the planet and an hourglass sends an urgent warning that “time is running out” for many species. Used around the world, the symbol has become the visual identity for the growing Extinction Rebellion movement and the world’s “ecological symbol of peaceful resistance.”

Symbol users are encouraged to share images via social media. Inclusive and global, the symbol has been tattooed on activists, spray-painted on walls, taped to street signs, projected monumentally, and formed by human figures in a meadow.

Learn more about the “Extinction Symbol” and see it for yourself by reserving tickets to “Designing Peace” at sfmcd.org/exhibitions.

Join MCD Mobile MakeArt tomorrow, November 17, from 3:00—5:00 PM at the North Beach Branch Library for Library Friday! 📚️

MCD has partnered with the San Francisco Public Library to bring hands-on creativity to libraries across San Francisco. Today, we’ll be at the North Beach Branch Library with “People in Polaroids”, inspired by our current exhibition “Designing Peace”.

“People in Polaroids” is an activity inspired by Startblok Elzenhagen, an affordable housing community in Amsterdam featured in “Designing Peace”. Photos of people in the space are embroidered with thread connecting the outlines of individuals—highlighting the connections between us all. Take inspiration from Startblok Elzenhagen by taking a Polaroid, decorating the photo, and writing a magnetic message on the back.

Happy World Kindness Day from MCD. May we all take the opportunity today to make a positive difference with the simple act of being kind 🤍

With kindness in mind, think about this question from “Designing Peace.” How can design help transitions from instability to peace?

Designed by Philippe Starck for Bibliotheques Sans Frontieres in 2014, “Ideas Box” is a portable library and pop-up multimedia center that can be easily shipped, is energy independent, and can be set up in 20 minutes. It was designed to be deployed to areas of hardship—refugee camps, isolated communities, underserved urban spaces, and remote Indigenous peoples’ land around the world.

Each box’s contents are tailored to the community’s needs. Ideas Box has been distributed across six continents, offering free access to information, culture, and educational resources, which are key tools in promoting healing and building more tolerant communities.

Celebrate World Kindness day, and visit the Ideas Box and over 25 more design proposals by reserving tickets to “Designing Peace” at sfmcd.org/visit.

“Designing Peace” is organized by Cooper Hewitt, Smithsonian Design Museum ().

Our Story

The Museum of Craft and Design (MCD) is San Francisco’s only museum devoted to craft and design. Founded in 2004, the MCD showcases designers, makers and artists through an exciting and distinctive series of craft and design-focused exhibitions and public programs. As a non-collecting institution, the museum actively collaborates with artists, designers, museums and universities, as well as design venues and practitioners to create inspirational experiences in the world of craft and design for visitors of all ages.
