Adorable sculptures by ceramic artist Loring Cheney. Exploring form and surface with a child-like approach, Loring’s playful sculptural work incorporates a wide range of wonderful textures, colors, and firing techniques to create enchanting whimsical creatures. Most often depicting annimals, Loring fires many of her creations with raku. Originating in Japan, raku involves pulling the ceramic piece out of the kiln while red hot. The American evolution of this technique introduces the additional step of then dropping the piece into a barrel of combustible material, igniting it and infusing the piece with carbon. Raku glazes are often formulated to react with this turbulent environment, creating a black crackle in the glaze or iridescent flashing colors. Bring a little color and whimsy into your home with one of these cheerful works of art. Find these and more at our gallery, or online: www.nhcraftsmen.com

Exquisite jewelry boxes and fine tea boxes by master craftsman William Taylor, featuring intricate inlays, multiple levels and a magnetic sliding drawers. William Taylor often uses unusual and historic woods to incorporate into his boxes. Most of his boxes require at least 30 hours of work and take two or more weeks to complete. The finishes are all done by hand and wood finishes are not something to be hurried. Resting during the building process allows William time to evaluate the wood’s movement as temperature and humidity change, and also for the finishes to cure properly, resulting in high quality fine boxes that are made to last for generations. William’s marquetry pictures are made entirely of wood that is sawn into the panel using a double bevel process, using a variety of natural colors from wood found around the globe. Each piece of wood is individually set into the panel in a time consuming process, requiring at least 8 hours of labor for one picture panel. The results are unrivaled, and no two panels are ever alike.

Earthy pottery with fern and leaf impressions by Shana Brautigam. Shana fires her rustic pottery in an outdoor wood-fired kiln, built using old electric kilns!
The kiln is fired with branches from the woods and scrap wood from local businesses. Firing with wood, the flames travel throughout the kiln, touching each pot and creating a range of beautiful earth tones and surface effects. Near the end of the firing, she blows soda ash into the kiln, which vaporizes immediately and glazes any surfaces it touches with unique effects. Shana's beautiful pottery is sure to become a favorite for any nature lover. Find these and more in the gallery, or online: www.nhcraftsmen.com
