Friends of Antrim Creek Natural Area in partnership with Norwood Area Historical Society present:

“An Overview of the Plant, Animal and Cultural History of the
Antrim Creek Natural Area” by Dr. Chuck Cleland.

Saturday August 12, 10am
Antrim Creek Natural Area 9890 Old Dixie Hwy, Ellsworth, MI.
$10.00 suggested donation Meet at the Old Antrim Schoolhouse, Old Dixie Highway.

For thousands of years before the arrival of Euro Americans in northern Michigan, native people, ancestors of the modern Ojibwe and Odawa residents of the region today, lived along the shores of Lake Michigan including the Antrim Creek Natural Area in peace and prosperity. During these years they learned how to care for and manage its natural resources for the benefit of all.

Today as we are faced with climate change, it is necessary for those of us who are now in possession of the same shoreline to preserve the natural resources of the land which has been inherited by its modern residents. This aboriginal knowledge of the previous residents may lie at the core of being able to pass this example to future generations. Doctor Cleland, who is both an archaeologist and a zoologist, will present an overview of the plant, animal, and cultural history of Antrim Creek Natural Area and suggest a means to preserve the area through education and curation.

The weather wasn't looking so good yesterday evening to have a concert on the schoolhouse lawn, but that didn't stop the community from coming out to enjoy some great music from Terry Coveyou Music. Almost 60 people packed into the schoolhouse to hear some great hits from the 60s, 70s, and even a Christmas song by request. Terry had them, tapping their feet, clapping, and even whistling and singing along. 👏👏 Thank you Terry and everyone who attended.

A proclamation from 1963 encouraged communities to ring bells at 2:00pm on July 4th to signify the signing of the Decleration of Independence (though it wasn't really signed that day. 😀) Norwood has kept this tradition going for many years. 🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸

Hello Members, Hunters and Friends,

The officers of NAHS have decided to postpone this year’s Hunters Lunch fundraiser until next year. This difficult decision comes in view of fluctuating Covid-19 cases in our county as well as input from key volunteers from the Norwood Community Church and the Norwood Needles quilting group. After struggling to develop a suitable and safe gathering alternative to the traditional schoolhouse lunch, we found it necessary to hit the pause button.

We optimistically say “postpone” because we’re reluctant to say “cancel” for such a time-honored community tradition. For last year’s Hunters’ Lunch during Covid-19 we made some outdoor meal and distancing adaptations, and despite the awful weather we did succeed at a better-than-break-even fundraiser outcome. This year, however, we’ve been unable to pull all the pieces together.

Hopefully, we’ll be back in business with the Hunters’ Lunch next year. We hope you can consider an extra end-of-season donation to help us offset the loss.

Annual Members Meeting
WE WILL, however, be hosting our annual members meeting at the Schoolhouse on Wednesday, November 17 at 6pm. But it will NOT be a potluck dinner, it will be a regular meeting. Please be prepared for the election of officers. Officers hold two-year terms. This year’s elections are for President and Secretary. The candidate offered for President is Trevor Dotson. Trevor is a member of the Historical Society, lives in Norwood Township, serves on the Norwood Township Planning Commission and is the Charlevoix Historical Society Manager of Operations. We still don't have a candidate for the Secretary position.

We look forward to seeing you next week!

Your 2021 Officers,

David Vermeesch, President
Chuck Cleland, Vice President
Nancy Cleland, Treasu

Greetings Members and Friends,

Check out our Summer Schedule below, and please join us next Wednesday for a return to in-person meetings! It's our first gathering of the season. We'll share a budget report, preview the year, and we'll talk about the needs, opportunities, and priorities for the upcoming months.

You'll notice we have a couple of volunteer work days planned too, plus we're aiming to host our annual Summer Cookout Picnic Social in June again. And our Summer Historical Programs are back! We received some generous new acquisitions that we're excited to show off. In July Sandy Miles and Nancy Cleland will be giving us a review of our collections. And we've begun planning for a new Village History walking tour!

As always, newcomers, visitors and volunteers are encouraged to check us out! All are welcome to our events and Members' Meetings. Attention to current CDC and MDHHS Covid-19 protocols will be appreciated.

And if you haven't renewed or started your Membership for 2021, you might want to wait a few more days. What? You read that right. If you'll consider increasing or starting at a higher Membership Level this year, we have a special offer for you. Watch your email over the next few days, and let's see what we can do together.

We're looking forward to getting together again!

Your Officers,

David Vermeesch, President
Chuck Cleland, Vice President

21/11/2020

Another Opening Day has passed, and just as it has for over 100 years, a Hunters Lunch was served in Norwood Michigan. This year with gales, torrential rain, and Covid-19, was a challenge to be sure, and it looked a little different, but we are Norwood and the tradition continued. Below is a picture of our wonderful township hall where the Hunters Lunches would have occurred years ago, not hot dogs certainly but perhaps homemade soup, and of course squirrel pie, a plentiful commodity in Northern Michigan. The community would have shared a meal, and then danced the night away while little ones slept bundled and tucked up on the stage. Here is a traditional Squirrel Pie Recipe for your enjoyment compliments of NAHS. Many thanks to "Poachers Squirrel Pie" for the Recipe. ENJOY.

Ingredients
1 squirrel once skinned, I slow cooked him in water on high for around 4 hours, by which time the meat was falling off the bone. I let it cool before stripping the meat from the bones. For those that are interested, there was 110g cooked meat on a well fed, winter male squirrel
½ bulb garlic peeled but cloves left whole
1 onion diced
3 savoy cabbage leaves chopped. Add any veggies you have available
Various root vegetables for the mash I used potato, sweet potato, carrot, swede and parsnip
Butter for the mash

Instructions
Chop the root vegetables, and boil then mash with the butter.
Fry the onion until it has a little colour. Add a ladle at a time of the water the squirrel was cooked in, letting it reduce before adding the next. Add the cabbage with the last ladle of stock. Simmer down a little and add gravy powder/cornflour to thicken it.
Mix the cooked squirrel meat with the onion and cabbage gravy and tip into a casserole dish or individual pie dish. Top with the root mash and bake until the top is golden brown.

Last Saturday, I rode my bicycle through Norwood as part of the DALMAC bicycle tour. Your town is beautiful and the brand new road was a welcome change from what lay behind and was longed for while riding what lay ahead. I have wondered what Norwood is and why it's there. Now I know some of the what but not much of the why. I'll come back to your website to learn more.

When the Declaration of Independence was adopted by congress on July 4, 1776, crowds that day went wild with joy and pride. In today’s observances, the true importance of this day should be given greater emphasis.

Join us in honoring this great Nation.
