Thank you to everyone who joined us last night for the opening of Sydney Smith's “Desire Permutations," curated by Allison Ward. The exhibit continues this week, FR 5-8 + SA 12-5, through July 26.

And thank you, Zuany Perez for your live performance last night, entitled, “Floating Down the [REDACTED] River of Tulsa, Oklahoma.” Zuany Perez, also known as Swan Shekinaa, was born in Iztapalapa, CDMX and was raised in the Midsouth, USA. “The experience of assimilating to a new country at a young age has left space in my current years to explore the importance of my heritage, roots, and culture. As a person existing in the space between cultures, I explore and weave complex narratives of integration through sounds, symbols, and textures between seemingly contrasting experiences. My current discipline within my art practice is not tied to a medium but to the concept of cultural exploration through a nuanced and contemporary lens.”

OPENING TONIGHT, THURS 5-8PM! Positive Space opens Sydney Smith’s “Desire Permutations” on July 10, curated and scored by Allison Ward, with sound piece by Zuany Perez performed live opening night at 7pm.

Curator Allison Ward created the exhibition score, entitled “the earth beneath you is crumbling as we speak,” a long form harsh/ambient score made to fit within the show “Desire Permutations” by Sydney Smith. It is a compilation of field recordings from different creeks around Oklahoma and Arkansas. It also includes field recordings of glass breaking, birds, cicadas, dripping water, horses running, and vocal cues by Allison.

Run Time: 34 minuets and 8 seconds

About the Curator and Sound Artist: Allison Ward is an artist and classically trained vocalist from Oklahoma whose work encompasses performance, experimental sound, sculpture making, and curation. Her work has been shown at institutions such as The Philbrook Museum of Art, The Oklahoma City Museum of Art, and on the cover of “Art Focus Magazine.” She has toured the United States and played her experimental compositions internationally. In addition to being a freelance curator, Allison is the acting Executive Director and co-founder of the non-profit Art House Tulsa, which puts on large scale community art shows and provides opportunities to regional artists. Allison is a 2027 MFA candidate at The School of the Art Institute of Chicago, studying in their Art & Technology / Sound Practices program.

OPENING THIS THURS, 5-8PM! Positive Space opens Sydney Smith’s “Desire Permutations” on July 10, curated by Allison Ward, with sound piece by Zuany Perez performed live opening night.

About the Noise Project: “Castigada (kast tee gah da)” is a sound project by Zuany Perez exploring the resonance between different forms of existing media to create the feeling of dissonance that is found inside the often contrasting and unseen, but felt, intricacies of storytelling.

“Desire Permutations” asks how desire persists when the land has been made toxic. The riverbeds of the artist’s childhood—dammed, diverted, left to dry out—become loci of grief, ecological inheritance, and collective memory. These bodies of water, remade and rebranded into sites of leisure in spite of their toxicity, speak to a longer history of extraction, ecological violence, and capitalist fantasy.

About the Artist: Sydney Smith “loves long walks on the beach.”

In addition to being a freelance curator, Allison is the acting Executive Director and co-founder of the non-profit Art House Tulsa, which organizes large scale community art shows and provides opportunities to regional artists.

OPENING IN ONE WEEK! Positive Space Opens Sydney Smith’s “Desire Permutations” on July 10, Curated by Allison Ward

Centered on contaminated bodies of water in Oklahoma, “Desire Permutations” asks how desire persists when the land has been made toxic.

Inflected by a textual history of resistance, the work behaves like sediment—with language that layers, slips, and collapses across screens. “Desire Permutations” refuses clarity, offering instead a poetics of dispersal. Influenced by ecological grief, displaced longing, and the inchoate textures of digital decay, the work offers no stable ground. Only runoff. Only residue.

About the Artist: Sydney Smith “loves long walks on the beach.”

About the Curator: Allison Ward is an artist from Oklahoma whose work encompasses performance, experimental sound, sculpture making, and curation. In addition to being a freelance curator, Allison is the acting Executive Director and co-founder of the non-profit Art House Tulsa, which organizes large scale community art shows and provides opportunities to regional artists.
