We are all familiar with marking out our territories, especially on our islands, where all sorts of space is limited, precious and regularly contested. With NO ORDINARY TERRAIN, The artists invite the audience to have a close look at the appropriation of space both from
a local and a globalized perspective, whilst tapping into personal and collective stories. They are digging deep into the various relationships between the public and the private sphere, and experience how the boundaries between both spheres can be more fluid, poetic, refreshing and inspiring than our polarized contemporary media bubbles make us believe. NO ORDINARY TERRAIN unravels certain mechanisms in our society and asks us to reflect about the systems that we use unconsciously, each day; it illustrates that no terrain is ordinary and reveals more about who we are, and how we shape our reality and identity. The temporary artists collective will present both individual and communal works through research, an exhibition, a number of events and an occupation of the museums’ public courtyard. NO ORDINARY TERRAIN is supported by MUŻA and the Arts Council Malta's Project Support Grant.

I want to build a wall because it provides the security to sit and think
I want to build a wall because boundaries make difference out of sameness
I want to build a wall to set boundaries
I want to build a wall because every wall or fence implies its own destruction
I want to build a wall to enclose and connect
I want to build a wall because a wall is a hell of a lot better than a war
I want to build a wall to consolidate my sovereignty
I want to build a wall because walls are destruction and creation all at once
I want to build a wall because they reduce wind speeds, retain soil moisture and prevent erosion
I want to build a wall for territorial control
I want to build a wall because every boundary is ultimately a message
I want to build a wall to suggest difference, create distinction
I want to build a wall because the self itself begins with a boundary
I want to build a wall to mark out the distinct realms between things
I want to build a wall because it defines the world between heaven and earth
I want to build a wall to differentiate, not to segregate
I want to build a wall to stops this neoliberal cannibalism real estate s**t show
**t
I want to build a wall because I like things to be clear
I want to build a wall because I like it’s texture
I want to build a wall to keep out the pain
I want to build a wall because Hadrian built one
I want to build a wall out of habit
I want to build a wall because the world has always been split between wallers and non-wallers
I want to build a wall be sure about what I am walling and walling out
I want to build a wall to give offense to the other side
I want to build a wall because good walls make good neighbours
I want to build a wall because not all walls are primitive, irrational, fearful and hostile
I want to build a wall because of its psychological as well as its physical significance
I want to build a wall because walls may have fallen but boundaries remain
I want to build a wall to block the view
I want to build a wall to hide
I want to build a wall to start a house
I want to build a wall to put new life in broken rock
Fire Building (Burn the Formwork), Oscar Tuazon, 2017
Tuazon installed this object made of concrete in an industrial wasteland along a canal - an undefined plot of land which is used by various groups of people. The object serves as a public fireplace. The cylindrical shaped sculpture can be used for barbecuing, warming up, and as a look-out. Just as physical experience plays a key role for Tuazon in the production process, his Fire Building is intended for immediate reception as a utilitarian object with a close relationship to everyday life: in contrast to the artistic practice of relational aesthetics, the art crowd is not the main recipient to whom the work is addressed. This heat-radiating sculpture, which is almost unthinkable as an official architectural structure within a regulated urban space, has a social dimension. It connotes a form of participation that eludes regulation and thus also has an inherent potential for friction. Using the archaic motive of the fireplace, it points to a communal activity.

NEVERLAND PAVILION, Halil Altindere, 2019
Halil Altindere's Neverland pavilion at the BIennale Arte 2019 continues his critique of the marginalisation of identity by state apparatuses, underlining the absence of those who do fall within the purview of national representation. Inspired by the refugee team who participated in the 2016 Summer Olympics, the artist proposes a pavilion for the excluded - but, as visitors discover, it is only a Paladian facade propped up by scaffolding.
Unsettling the concept of representation, it momentarily tricks the visitor and eschews expectations; there is no exhibition on view. However, as in "the School of Athens", the steps up to the pavilion can be activated as a social space, perhaps to contemplate and discuss the general tendency to believe in fake news, the most weighty symptom of the post-truth era. At once underlining the antiquatedness of the nation-state model and participating in it, Neverland is at once an intervention in and contribution to the Biennale Arte
THE BOUNDARY IS ONE OF THE IDEES FIXES OF CONTEMPORARY LIFE.
Boundaries of the self, boundaries of politics, boundaries of nations and childhood and disciplines populate the pages of academic journals, the press and the internet…What is the nature of our obligation when we construct a boundary? How can we bound and at the same time be generous? What is the relation between some people’s right to enclose themselves and the rights of others who find themselves excluded? How can boundaries function as places where social relationships are nurtured rather than suppressed? To use Marcuse’s turn of phrase, how can we begin to build walls of support rather than walls of fear? (Thomas Oles)
