A new year is nearly upon us.

COME ALONG ON AN IMPORTANT JOURNEY.

What’s so special about a small, ancient trail in Portage, Wisconsin? What were Wisconsin’s Native trails like in 1832? What happened on the Ho-Chunk Trail of Tears?

Learn all this and more with our FREE “Trails” learning guide. Even adults will learn things they never knew. View and download your copy here: https://www.agencyhouse.org/trails-curriculum

“Trails” will be the 2024 season theme at the Historic Indian Agency House. Between May 15 and October 15, 2024, families and educators who visit for events or tours may pick up a full-color, printed and bound copy of this learning guide FREE (while supplies last), compliments of a generous grant from the Community Foundation of South Central Wisconsin.

Dwain Schroeder of Waunakee recently donated a historic carved wooden spoon/ladle to the Agency House collection. This piece illustrates Juliette Kinzie's description of hand-carved wooden bowls and ladles which were made by Ho-Chunks. The spoon was collected in south central Wisconsin, and while it is difficult to determine a cultural affiliation of this piece, it falls within the general style of the historically described utensils.

On Friday night, we continued our 'bellows' experiments at the canoe burn. The historic precedent comes from an early illustration in which Indigenous canoe makers are seen fanning the flames.

Scouts from across the region came from as far as Illinois to participate in Historic Trails Weekend. They earned their Historic Trails Award, got our trails in ship-shape, and enjoyed several other activities from camping to dugout canoe-making to hoop rolling to tours and hikes and more. Thank you for all your hard work! We always look forward to this special weekend with you each year.

This Friday, come out to the Agency House from 5-7 pm to participate with the Scouts BSA in the second of three fire-wrought dugout canoe workshops this month. Admission is free.

Join us in our quest to experimentally create a fire-wrought dugout canoe using ancient methods and tools.  We commenced our project in 2021, and we are continuing the process of carefully burning out a dugout canoe. Each time, we try new methods and ideas.

Agency House Road—also known as Rustic Road 69—is part of the Wisconsin DOT's Rustic Roads program, which has granted the designation to more than 100 roads that provide "leisurely travel through the state's scenic countryside."

Mr. Jason Safian stopped by the Historic Indian Agency House recently while getting footage for a video series documenting Wisconsin’s unique Rustic Roads. Today, he posted a video on Rustic Road 69. Take a look:

The flower and kitchen gardens at the Agency House are at their peak. Come out and enjoy them in the beautiful weather.

Volunteers Ann Fuerst and John Anglim have invested countless hours in the beautiful gardens again this season, and the results are incredible. John's gardens feature native perennials, annuals, and just about everything in between. Ann's kitchen garden has been designed to reflect the "three sisters" crops of corn, squash, and beans which were staples in Ho-Chunk agriculture at the time of the Agency House.
