Artworks by Crystal McElroy Bryde

Crystal McElroy Bryde developed a love for art at a young age through an art program in elementary school. She looked forward to the days when the art teacher would arrive, and remembers drawing at home as well as doodling in her notebooks while in school.

After entering high school, Crystal began taking art lessons, but because art was not available in the high school, these lessons were outside of school. She was greatly influenced by the second art teacher, Gerald Bennett, because of his love for art despite his physical disability. She credits him for her desire to continue her arts education. She also had the opportunity to meet and learn from many other local artists while working with Gerald.

After high school, Crystal attended Mississippi University for Women, earning a degree in graphic design in 1990. She worked as a graphic designer for several years in the field of screen and offset printing. She began to teach art in Itawamba County Schools in 2006 as a traveling teacher, teaching elementary and high school art. She is currently teaching elementary art at Robinsonville Elementary School in the Tunica County School District. Teaching has been the art field where she has found the most pleasure.

Outside of work and school, she draws and paints florals, landscapes, and old houses including antebellum homes she has visited throughout Mississippi. Currently, her favorite medium is oils, though she originally started painting with acrylics. She also enjoys working with colored pencils.

Crystal also loves spending time with her family. She has been married to Thomas Bryde for 27 years and is the mother of three sons, Matthew, Daniel, and David. Crystal has been equally involved in her local church for many years.

Please join us for the opening reception on Sunday, April 1, 2012, 2-5p.m.

Going Places explores the culture, evolution, and eventual demise of horse-drawn transportation, from the early nineteenth century, through the industrial revolution, and into the 1900s and the dawn of the automobile age.

Going Places was curated by William F. Ayres, director of collections and interpretation at the Long Island Museum of American Art, History, and Carriages. The exhibition has been made possible by NEH on the Road, a special initiative of the National Endowment for the Humanities. It is toured by Mid-America Arts Alliance. Founded in 1972, Mid America is a nonprofit regional arts organization based in Kansas City, Missouri. For more information, visit www.maaa.org and www.nehontheroad.org.
